Afghanistan Country Brief - September 2005
Introduction
A land-locked country, Afghanistan is mostly mountains and deserts. Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan to the south and east, Iran to the west and Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to the north. In the extreme northeast, Afghanistan has a common border with the China. For maps of Afghanistan see the United Nations' Cartographic Section Afghanistan is split by a north-south divide along the Hindu Kush mountain range which rises more than 6000m in parts. Western and southern Afghanistan mark the eastern end of the Iranian plateau. The area is flat, bare and arid with few towns and a sparse population. North of the Hindu Kush, the Central Asia steppe stretches for thousands of miles into Siberia. Afghanistan is dry with cold winters and hot summers. Only 10-12 per cent of Afghanistan's terrain is cultivable. Fertile areas are found around Kandahar in the south-west, Jalalabad in the east, the oasis town of Herat in the west, Bamiyan valley in the centre and the river valleys of the north. Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, lies in the southern foothills of the Hindu Kush. Ringed by mountains, Kabul has been the capital since 1776 and is Afghanistan's largest city. At an altitude of 1815m, Kabul is hottest in July and coldest in January. The climate is dry all year. The average annual rainfall is 240mm.

The September 11th Sourcebooks The horrific September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon brought all of us here at the Archive feelings of rage at the hijackers, grief for the thousands who were murdered, and also determination that we will contribute to finding the best ways for America to respond. The Archive’s mission is to put on the record the primary source documentation that can enrich the policy debate, improve journalism, educate policymakers, and ensure that we don’t reinvent the wheel or repeat the mistakes of the past. To these ends, we have published a series of volumes called "The September 11th Sourcebooks." We have cast a wide net, because the policy debate itself is also ranging widely, from deployment options abroad to wiretap surveillance at home. The first volume In Volume II , Archive experts John Prados and Svetlana Savranskaya draw on declassified records and the memoirs of former Soviet officials to examine Soviet policymaking, military operations, and lessons learned from the last war in Afghanistan, a bloody, ten-year conflict that pitted Soviet military forces against CIA-backed Afghan rebels. The collection also includes excerpts from an essay written by analyst Steve Galster as an introduction to the Archive's microfiche collection

Schwerpunkt: Menschenrechte in Indien
Menschenrechte erheben universellen Geltungsanspruch.

ASEAN splintered over Afghanistan campaign
U.S. President Bush garnered full support from Asian leaders for his campaign against terror during the APEC Summit in China HONG KONG, China Asian leaders will reportedly sign a declaration backing the war on terrorism during the two-day summit South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Brunei on Monday. But early signs have suggested that leaders of some ASEAN nations with large Muslim constituents are wavering in their support for Washington. Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri, leader of the world's largest Muslim nation, on Thursday urged a ceasefire in Afghanistan. Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has also made veiled warnings that bombs may worsen the problem of terrorism. Observers have attributed this sudden change in stance to the growing civil unrest in their countries, which threatens their governments.
