Afghanistan Table of Contents AFGHANISTAN'S HISTORY, internal political development, foreign relations, and very existence as an independent state have largely been determined by its geographic location at the crossroads of Central, West, and South Asia. Over the centuries, waves of migrating peoples passed through the regiondescribed as a "roundabout of the ancient world," by historian Arnold Toynbeeleaving behind a mosaic of ethnic and linguistic groups. In modern times, as well as in antiquity, vast armies of the world passed through Afghanistan, temporarily establishing local control and often dominating Iran and northern India. Islam played a key role in the formation of Afghan history as well. Despite the Mongol invasion of Afghanistan in the early thirteenth century which has been described as resembling "more some brute cataclysm of the blind forces of nature than a phenomenon of human history," even a warrior as formidable as Genghis Khan did not uproot Islamic civilization, and within two generations his heirs had become Muslims. An often unacknowledged event that nevertheless played an important role in Afghan history (and in the politics of Afghanistan's neighbors and the entire region up to the present) was the rise in the tenth century of a strong Sunni dynastythe Ghaznavids. Their power prevented the eastward spread of Shiism from Iran, thereby insuring that the majority of the Muslims in Afghanistan and South Asia would be Sunnis.

Fast-forwarding Afghanistan's history
(Monday 21 February 2005) Afghanistan - The Mirage of Peace by Chris Johnson and Jolyon Leslie (Zed Books, £14.95) THIS is an immensely detailed review of the situation in Afghanistan since the beginning of the "war on terror" and the overthrow of the Taliban. It is written by two experts on the country who have lived and worked there for many years, remaining in Afghanistan to this very day. The authors are not sympathetic to the ambitions of the Western powers in the area.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN
by Mohammad Ismail Sloan
King Zahir Shah ruled Afghanistan for 40 years, from 1933 to 1973. He was not regarded as an inspired or imaginative leader, and indeed he hardly led at all, preferring to take it easy and to let the tribes govern themselves. Not much good was said about Zahir Shah at that time, but today almost all Afghans long for his return, considering what happened after he was removed from power. In about 1955, the Government of Afghanistan approached the United States of America for military assistance. Afghanistan wanted not only weapons but also to send her officers to the United States for military training. President Eisenhower considered this request but rejected it. Eisenhower said that Afghanistan was too far flung in location. American interests did not extend that far. Every country was asking for hand-outs, and the line had to be drawn somewhere. Eisenhower decided to draw the line at Afghanistan.
Afghan Freedom Fighters
In 1973, King Zahir Shah decided to take a holiday in Italy. While away on vacation, his cousin, Daud Khan, who was also the prime minister, decided to seize power. King Zahir Shah did not return to Afghanistan and did not contest the matter. He remains in Italy with his two sons, Ahmed Shah and Nadir Shah, to this day.

Afghanistan, History
Excavation of prehistoric sites suggests that early humans lived in northern Afghanistan at least 50,000 years ago and that farming communities in Afghanistan were among the earliest in the world. After 2000 bc successive waves of people from Central Asia moved into the area. Since many of these settlers were Aryans (speakers of the parent language of the Indo-European languages), a people who also migrated to Persia (now Iran) and India in prehistoric times, the area was called Aryana, or Land of the Aryans. By the middle of the 6th century bc the Persian Empire of the Achaemenid dynasty controlled the region of Aryana. About 330 bc, Alexander the Great defeated the last Achaemenid ruler and made his way to the eastern limits of Aryana and beyond. After his death in 323 bc several kingdoms fought for control of his Asian empire. These kingdoms included Seleucids, Bactria, and the Indian Mauryan Empire. deeper links

That said, is Afghanistan a safe travel destination? Broadly speaking, no, not really. While it's not the most dangerous place in the world, it's not exactly a place ready to take on tour groups and gap years, either. Obviously, people are traveling in Afghanistan and doing so without incident. I had no problems. But there are things to be careful about. Driving habits are atrocious. Land mines are everywhere. The Taliban is becoming more active. Security around the country is not good, meaning that if you choose to travel in the countryside, which I did, realize you are *on your own*. Yes, there are road blocks and vehicle searches coming in and out of most towns, but in between... sometimes nothing. As of May 2003 travel in the Kandahar and Southeastern regions by westerners was another foolish idea. If you want to go, by all means go, but be aware. The best thing I can recommend is that if you plan to visit Afghanistan you exercise a higher than usual level of awareness of what's going on around you, don't lose your common sense, consider the motives of strangers, be skeptical, and keep abreast of the latest situation around the country. If this seems like useless and vague information than you might not be ready for Afghanistan.

The New York based rights watchdog, in a 133-page report released on Friday, accused some high-ranking officials in the Afghan government of violating human rights and demanded their trial.

Majid Turmusani - Policy Advisor to Minister of Martyrs and Disabled. DRAFT
Disability agenda in Afghanistan
Afghanistan is undergoing a complete process of reconstruction and rebuilding of its social and economic resources. The long years of war had resulted in total destruction of infrastructure of the country as well as the destruction of people's self confidence for peaceful living in this region. Further, nature has been harsh to this already deprived region and years of drought and resulting poverty have been major causes of impairment in Afghanistan, especially those relating to malnutrition. According to the United Nations, there are between 9 - 10 million land mines in the country and estimates indicate more than 10% of total population being disabled. The continued political conflict in the country resulted in limited services available for war veterans and other disabled people. This conflict has always prevented healthy development of civil life including law and order. Laws have often come to answer for specific war and emergency situation including but not limited the families of martyrs, war disabled and disabled people in general. Disability therefore was depicted and regarded as a war issue and accommodation was made within an emergency context until recently
