(Photo: Shah Marai / AFP-Getty Images) Before the fall of the Taliban in November 2001, 27 million Afghan citizens had to make do with approximately 20,000 working telephone lines. Domestic connections were spotty, while only a handful of expensive satellite phones could dial internationally. Today, through the extraordinary efforts of the Afghan Wireless Communication Company and its parent company, Telephone Systems International (TSI), more than 300,000 citizens subscribe to the Afghan wireless network, with coverage in twenty cities and an additional twenty cities slated for service by the end of the summer. The development of the Afghan wireless network has been the mission of Ehsan Bayat, an Afghan-American who fled Afghanistan in 1980. Observing the need for a comprehensive communications network in Afghanistan, Bayat partnered his United States-based company, TSI, with the Afghan Ministry of Communications to launch a wireless network that Bayat hopes will be “the digital artery of our nation, allowing communication, commerce, and electronic exchanges to flow easily among all Afghans.” This digital network “leaves no part of Afghanistan untouched,” according to Bayat, who adds “by the end of the summer, we will have three-quarters of the nation covered.” The speed with which TSI and Afghan Wireless have been able to build the mobile network has made it the provider of choice for government agencies and businesses, especially in and around Kabul. Afghan Wireless provided the communications support for the

July 8, 2002 Preserving Afghanistan's Cultural Heritage: An Interview with Nancy Hatch Dupree An internationally recognized expert on the history, art, and archaeology of Afghanistan, Nancy Hatch Dupree has dedicated a lifetime to documenting and preserving Afghanistan's cultural heritage. Mrs. Dupree arrived in Kabul in 1962 with her first husband, an American diplomat. There she fell in love; not only with Afghanistan, but also with Louis Dupree, a renowned archaeologist and scholar of Afghanistan's culture and history. For the next 15 years, the Duprees traveled throughout Afghanistan, conducting archaeological excavations. Afghanistan's Cultural Heritage
Afghanistan has a rich and long cultural heritage. Its location on the the old Silk Route between China and the Middle East means it's cultural life has been subject to many influences. It has the (dubious) honour of being been occupied by many great civilizations including Greek, Persian and Indian. This melting pot has produced a number of ethnic groups. Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks and Turkmens form the majority, whilst Baluch, Turkmen, Aimaq, Nuristani, Pamiri, Pashai, Kirghiz and Kazakh all call Afghanistan their home. The ancient religion of Zoroastrianism began here around 600 BC century (one of the world's first monotheistic religions), Buddhism spread and remained strong until the 10th century AD and Islam arrived in the 7th century AD.

The Cultural Profiles are online country guides to the arts, media and heritage, published by Visiting Arts, the national agency from Great Britain, which promotes the flow of international arts into the UK, and develops international cultural relations. The Cultural Profile is not only directed at culture producers, mediators, artists, and cultural institutions in order to promote international exchange and cooperation, but also at the general public interested in such information. The profiles will be drawn up, most of all, for countries where significant changes are taking place. In 2003, commissioned by Visiting Arts, Linda Mazur traveled a large portion of Afghanistan, interviewing artists and the staff members of institutions. She made an inventory of the country’s culture, which cataloged the state of affairs in every artistic area, highlighting current possibilities and deficits. As emphasized by Cultural Profiles' editor Tim Doling: "The role which culture can play in reconstruction and development is often underestimated by economists and agencies. It is often forgotten that in the daily lives of the people living in adversity, culture is a constant and reviving presence, both healing and interpretative. Artists are often the most eloquent commentators on their people's situation.”

by Reverend Damuzi (12 Apr, 2005) Marc Deeley of Spirit Aid explains revolutions in the industry With the world facing unavoidable shortages of water, oil and other natural resources, hemp can save us from widespread poverty, famine and death. Hemp industries proponent Marc Deeley explains how a project he is involved with – Spirit Aid – might tip the scales in favour of humankind.
In a blasted, bombed-out Afghani countryside, surrounded by desert wastes, Deeley proposes hemp as an answer to a people's woes. Since the 90's, hemp enthusiasts have touted the plant as a source of cheap and easy-to-grow fiber, fuel and environmental regeneration, but few have taken the next step and actually tried to make it work. Deeley and his partner, Paul Wylie, are at the forefront of that modest group that hopes to make theory into practice.
Paul Wylie has faced investigation, imprisonment and death during the course of his efforts to implement a Nicaraguan Hemp Project. Despite the approval of the Nicaraguan government, US Drug Enforcement Agents infiltrated the Nicaraguan hemp project, claimed the company was growing recreational cannabis, burned the field to the ground and threw Wylie in perhaps the worst prison in Central America.

Countering Cultural Terrorism: A Response to the Destruction in Afghanistan
Update: June 21, 2002:
Experts have decided not to re-create Afghan's smashed Buddha statues
IRNA Press Agency,Islamabad, May 31, 2002. Archaeological experts in Afghanistan have decided not to re-build the two giant Buddha statues in the Bamiyan valley, destroyed by the Taliban last year, UNESCO's Assistant Director general for Culture, Mounir Bouchenaki, said at a press conference in Islamabad on Friday. However, Bouchenaki said the cave complex at the former site of the statues and the murals there would protected. Through a Japanese funded project, worth 70,000 dollars, a small museum would be set up and new excavations undertaken in Bamian, a valley on whose mountain cliffs the giant Buddha statues were built. The decision not to re-create the Buddhas was also taken at a conference of archaeological experts in the Afghan capital Kabul earlier this week. Click here for more. In response to news reports that Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia has begun demolishing statues across the country, Bonnie Burnham, President of the World Monuments Fund, issued the following statement:
The Taliban's edict to destroy all pre-Islamic statues in Afghanistan and their subsequent demolition of the great Buddhas in Bamiyan was a disturbing reminder that cultural destruction can be a potent weapon in campaigns of political oppression and tyranny.

120. Cultural Terrorism
afghanistan s fundamentalist Taliban regime s destruction of preIslamic statues has been universally condemned as cultural terrorism.
http://www.archaeology.org/0105/newsbriefs/afghan.html
Your browser does not support javascript Cultural Terrorism Volume 54 Number 3, May/June 2001 by Kristin M. Romey "The real God is only Allah, and all other false gods should be removed." This statement from the one-eyed cleric Mullah Omar sent a chill through the international community following an edict issued by Afghanistan's fundamentalist Taliban regime announcing that all pre-Islamic statues in the country were to be destroyed. That edict, and the resulting destruction, has been universally condemned as "cultural terrorism." Among the targeted relics were the Bamiyan Buddhas, two enormous 1,500-year-old statues hewn out of a cliff in the valley of Bamiyan, 140 miles northwest of the Afghan capital of Kabul, that were once one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. Destruction of the Buddhas was said to be completed by March 12. A Taliban guard has also reported that the second-century B.C. Buddhist complex in Ghazni was razed two weeks before the edict was issued. Many areas where the destruction is occurring have been sealed off to outsiders, making independent verification impossible at this time. The Taliban seized control of much of Afghanistan in the mid-1990s and has since enforced an extreme interpretation of Islamic law. Women cannot work or attend school and are not allowed out of the house without a spouse or male relative. Music, cinema, and photography of people and animals are among the hundreds of aspects of modern life that are banned.
