The growth of civil aviation requires not only solutions to urgent issues of environmental protection and the conservation of natural resources but also greater safety, comfort and punctuality, in short, more passenger-friendliness. Moreover, permanent pressure to increase marketability and competitiveness and the limitations on airport capacity and European air space that are expected to remain for the foreseeable future require revolutionary technological solutions.
    FIVE GUIDING OBJECTIVES FOR RESEARCH
An Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) has been set up at the EU to determine strategic actions at national and European level. On top of this, the Group of Personalities, a group of high-ranking aviation experts chaired by EU research commissioner Philippe Busquin, has formulated the following guiding objectives:
    • Improve passenger comfort
    • Raise the safety of air travel despite the expected increase in air transport volume
    • Reduce ecological damage from nitrogen oxide emissions and noise
    • Increase the competitiveness of European industry as regards air vehicles for commercial air transport, propulsion and equipment.

by Wolfdietrich Hoeveler The German Aerospace Industry Association (BDLI) takes a positive stock of the aerospace research program that was initiated in 1994. BDLI questioned all of the 40 companies of the system and supplying industry which are participating in the program in a survey. Even though only 25 companies replied, these companies represent 95 percent of the volume of the DM600 million program. The industry is paying a share in the same amount. The participation in the research program has had positive effects on the employment situation of the companies. 104 new jobs, especially in the engine business, were generated. All of the new employees were contracted for research and development. Based on the survey results, BDLI assumes that several hundred work places can be secured due to the program. The questioned companies commented positively about the new possibilities for contacts in the research sector. Especially the supplying industry is very interested in intensifying its relations to universities and large scale research, mainly done by DLR. The interest in EU research initiatives has also been enforced by the national research program. Still, the immense administrative effort to get EU subsidies and the prospects of success are commented on critically.

Boeing establishes links with Italian aerospace research center
Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (CIRA), the Italian aerospace research center, today signed a memorandum of understanding to investigate and develop technology projects of mutual interest. As a first step, during the next four months, representatives from Boeing, an established leader in aerospace technology development, and CIRA, one of the leading aviation and space technology research organizations in Europe and a key member of the Campania Aerospace Research Network in Italy, will discuss technology projects for possible collaboration. The initial focus will be on exploratory studies for technology projects associated with a number of Boeing initiatives including the Boeing 7E7 Dreamliner, a super-efficient airplane that is under development, as well as technology projects involving the use of CIRA test facilities, including an icing wind tunnel and a plasma wind tunnel. The Italian Space Agency and National Research Council own the majority of the shares of CIRA, while the regional government (Regione Campania) and major Italian aerospace companies also hold shares.

Pressinfos Hertrich: aerospace research programme will strengthen technology engine for Germany Username: Password: Hertrich: aerospace research programme will strengthen technology engine for Germany - BDLI: €50 million federal funds required per annum for aerospace research - 50% rate of funding for industry
Berlin, 12 March 2002. The German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) is arguing for the aerospace research programme to be continued beyond the year 2003. The BDLI would like to achieve an annual level of support of €50 million from federal funds plus a 50% rate of funding for industrial research projects, in line with recommendations from experts on the Aerospace Research Advisory Council, drawn from the government, the federal states, academia and industry. BDLI President Rainer Hertrich used the occasion of a technology forum organised jointly by the BDLI and the German Society of Aeronautical Astronautics (DGLR) to stress the special importance of the aerospace research programme, which has to be viewed as "part of a major technology offensive for Germany".
"Our German aerospace industry is itself making an outstanding contribution to Germany's position as a knowledge and technology base. The amount it spends on research and development accounts for 20% of the total spent in this area in German industry, making it the biggest single contributor. Like all aerospace nations, Germany too must exploit the opportunities provided by our industry as a technology engine. For this we depend on an optimal research environment. Investment on research is an investment in the future, without which a high-wage country cannot survive against the international competition," said Hertrich, CEO of the biggest aerospace company in Europe, EADS.

    Abstract
The Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) was visited on 29
June 1994 to discuss the extent of aerospace research being carried out in the Republic of Korea. The major areas of research and development activity at KARI were found to be aircraft, aerospace, and satellite technologies. The institute was established in Oct 89 by the Korean Aerospace Industry Development Policy Commission to promote aerospace technology and create a competitive aerospace market in Korea. At present, the institute is in the process of building test facilities specifically for the purpose of testing aircraft and satellites. The first test facility scheduled for completion sometimes within this year is the subsonic wind tunnel facility. It seems
