Twenty top pupils from schools throughout South Africa last week discovered the magic of flight, and the important role that local mechanical engineers play in the aerospace industry. It is worrisome that a hundred years after the Wright brothers successfully flew a manned powered aircraft, the romance has gone out of aviation. The sense of adventure that once drew the cream of the crop of school learners has largely disappeared. And according to local industrialists, it is apparent that brilliant young engineers don't consider going into aerospace careers anymore. The Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Pretoria aimed to address this situation by inviting twenty top-performing grade 11 and 12 learners to a unique space and aviation camp during the July school holidays. The four-day camp included lectures on aircraft aerodynamics, the local aerospace industry, space travel, and space medicine; and visits to numerous factories and organizations.

Occasional Address at the Aeronautical Engineering Graduation Ceremony by The Honourable J J Spigelman Cheif Justice of New South Wales In a number of speeches that I have given I have made a particular point but never to a more appropriate audience than this. If we were to have a competition to build a statue to only one person who has improved the Australian way of life more than any other in this century, who would that person be? The answer I proposed and repeat today is that the person who has most improved our way of live over the course of the last century is the chief engineer on the Boeing 747 Project. Until about the mid 1960s, when I was a student at this University, it was still cheaper to take someone on a boat and feed them for six weeks than it is to fly to Europe. The transformation, primarily by the Boeing 747, has made overseas travel feasible for the overwhelming majority of Australians.
There can be no doubt that these expanded opportunities for travel now available to all Australians, and of course also available to persons to come to Australia, have overcome the intellectual and cultural provincialism with which this nation was afflicted for most of its existence.

lide rules, a wind tunnel and a small but enthusiastic group of faculty and students made up Iowa State's department of aeronautical engineering more than half a century ago. Through its remarkable evolution including a name change in 1960 to reflect the nation's commitment to space flight ISU's department of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics maintained close ties to the people who were instrumental in its growth, including T. A. Wilson. Wilson was a member of aeronautical engineering's first graduating class in March 1943. He returned three years later as one of the department's three instructors and went on to become chairman of the board and CEO of The Boeing Corp. Wilson and his wife, Grace, Seattle, have given Iowa State $1 million to fund an endowed faculty chair in the College of Engineering, preferably in the department of civil engineering or aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics. The Grace Miller Wilson and T. Wilson Endowed Engineering Chair strengthens a faculty already known for its engineering expertise and teaching effectiveness and underscores two families' strong ties to Iowa State.

Do you have good people skills? Good design skills? Do you want to be the one who liaises between the maintenance crews and the manufacturers?
Your job will be more analytical and less “hands on” than the mechanical maintenance crew. You will talk over problems with them, discuss workable solutions and take their concerns back to the manufacturer.
If you work for the Australian Defence Forces you could be involved in putting design and repair schemes into place. In General Aviation, you could be involved in designing modifications to parts.
This job will appeal to someone who likes diagnosis and is more design-minded. Based in your office rather than in the workshop, you’ll be writing detailed reports on equipment problems and coming up with strategies to make effective changes. MECHNICAL MAINTENANCE

Aerospace engineering
(Redirected from Aeronautical engineering Aerospace engineering is the branch of engineering concerning aircraft spacecraft and related topics. It is often called aeronautical engineering, particularly when referring solely to aircraft, and astronautical engineering, when referring to spacecraft. Some of the elements of aerospace engineering are:
  • Aerodynamics - the study of fluid flow around objects such as wings or through objects such as wind tunnels (see also lift and aeronautics Propulsion - the energy to move a vehicle through the air (or in outer space) is provided by internal combustion engines jet engines , or rockets (see also propeller and Spacecraft Propulsion Control or flight dynamics - the study of maneuvering vehicles to achieve the desired position and attitude (that is, which way the vehicle is pointing) (see also Astrodynamics Structures - design of the physical configuration of the craft to withstand the forces encountered during flight. Aerospace engineering aims very much at keeping structures lightweight. Materials - related to structures, aerospace engineering also studies the materials of which the aerospace structures are to be built. New materials with very specific properties are invented, or existing ones are modified to improve their performance.

Nicholas Hoff, pioneering aeronautical engineer, dies
Everyone who has flown safely in the thin aluminum fuselages of today's commercial jetliners owes a debt of gratitude to Nicholas J. Hoff. The well-known aeronautical engineer pioneered the study of the stability of such structures in the 1940s through the '60s. Hoff, a professor emeritus of aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford University, died at his campus home on Monday, Aug. 4, of old age. Born on Jan. 3, 1906 in the small town of Magyarovar in western Hungary, Hoff was eight when his family moved to Budapest. There, he graduated from the same high school as three other great Hungarian scientists: physicists Eugene Wigner and Leo Szilard, and mathematician John von Neumann. "He was one of the last of this group of great Hungarian scientists, including Wigner, Szilard, von Neumann, Teller and von Karman, who came to the United States in the period between World War I and II," said George Springer, chairman of Stanford's aeronautics and astronautics department. As a boy, Hoff was an avid reader, especially of books on geography and history. He read widely in Hungarian and German literature. Private lessons in English and French helped him cultivate his linguistic gifts. He played the violin in the school orchestra. But it was his interest in sports that lead to his career in aeronautics.
