(Redirected from Aeronautical engineering Aerospace engineering is the branch of engineering concerning aircraft spacecraft and related topics. It is often called aeronautical engineering, particularly when referring solely to aircraft, and astronautical engineering, when referring to spacecraft. Some of the elements of aerospace engineering are:
  • Aerodynamics - the study of fluid flow around objects such as wings or through objects such as wind tunnels (see also lift and aeronautics Propulsion - the energy to move a vehicle through the air (or in outer space) is provided by internal combustion engines jet engines , or rockets (see also propeller and Spacecraft Propulsion Control or flight dynamics - the study of maneuvering vehicles to achieve the desired position and attitude (that is, which way the vehicle is pointing) (see also Astrodynamics Structures - design of the physical configuration of the craft to withstand the forces encountered during flight. Aerospace engineering aims very much at keeping structures lightweight. Materials - related to structures, aerospace engineering also studies the materials of which the aerospace structures are to be built. New materials with very specific properties are invented, or existing ones are modified to improve their performance.

50 Years of Aeronautical Engineering
Akerman Hall Just 2 years after Charles Lindbergh dramatized the future of aviation by flying solo across the Atlantic, the University of Minnesota established a Department of Aeronautical Engineering. Although its formal existence dates from 1929, the department had its initial start the year before when Dean Ora M. Leland of the College of Engineering invited John D. Akerman, chief engineer at the Minneapolis-based Mohawk Aircraft Company , to give lectures on aircraft design in courses administered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Even before that, the University had sown the seeds for the Aeronautical Engineering Department by offering a few courses in aerodynamics taught by Charles Boehnlein in both daytime and evening classes. With Professor Akerman as acting head of the department, Aeronautical Engineering began its official life in the fall of 1929 in the old Mechanical Engineering building. Professor Akerman and one other instructor taught all the aeronautical engineering courses. Professor Joseph A. Wise of the Civil Engineering Department gave courses in aircraft structures, and Professor Boehnlein taught three courses in aerodynamics. That was the extent of the department that was to grow to maturity in little more than a decade.

1929 to 1958 - From Aeronautical Engineering to Mechanics
Part I
The University of Minnesota first offered courses in aeronautical engineering to undergraduates in mechanical engineering in 1926. This was 13 years after the first aeronautical engineering program in the U.S. was established at MIT. In early 1928, Ora M. Leland, Dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture, proposed to the Minnesota Board of Regents that an independent department of aeronautical engineering be established. He believed that "Minnesota is favorably located to become a center for this field of engineering for the Northwest." Leland recommended that the new curriculum continue much as it had from within the mechanical engineering department. A special lectureship was given to John D. Akerman, who not only taught during the 1928-1929 school year, but also helped design the final form of the department. In the fall of 1929, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Minnesota officially opened its doors to students. John Akerman, then an associate professor, served as its first department head, a position he would hold for nearly three decades. Consistent with Akerman's background, the department's curriculum reflected the interests of industry. Born in Latvia, Akerman began his aeronautical studies at the Imperial Technical Institute in Moscow under the pioneer aerodynamicist Nickolai Joukowski. Akerman was also acquainted with Igor Sikorsky and maintained contact with Sikorsky after both immigrated to the USA. When World War I started, Akerman served as a pilot for the Russian Imperial Air Service. After the Bolshevik take over in 1917, he fled to France and served as a pilot in the French air force. He moved to the United States after the war in 1918.

INTRODUCTION
These guidelines are aimed at providing more information about the requirements for registration at the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) in addition to the broader requirements set out in Policy Statement R2/1A. Candidates wishing to become registered as professional engineers with ECSA must: (i) hold a relevant academic qualification recognised by ECSA through accreditation or evaluation, or pass any examination which ECSA may prescribe; and (ii) demonstrate that they have been trained to an acceptable level of competence in defined elements, in so far as it relates to aeronautical engineering, for at least three years; and (iii) display the attributes of a professional person. Immediately upon graduation, candidates are encouraged to apply to ECSA for registration as candidate engineers (CEs), whereafter they will be provided with all relevant documents needed for the complete training period.

When I was 13 years old, I began building wood gliders, and when I could afford the equipment, radio-controlled gliders. This fascination with flying made me want to understand why planes fly. I studied aeronautical engineering at California Polytechnic State University, where one of my senior projects was to build and fly a spruce wood sailplane. This interest in lightweight planes lead to my first job in aerospace design, building lightweight aircraft structures on the B-1 bomber.
I continued studying aeronautical design in graduate school at Virginia Tech, where I used supercomputers to model structural dynamics. As computers got bigger and faster, they generated huge volumes of numbers to the point where graphics became the only method to analyze complex engineering problems.

THE WORK
Aeronautical Engineering is concerned not only with the design, production and use of aircraft but also with missiles, hovercraft and helicopters, rockets and satellites. The pace of development in the aerospace industry means that the aeronautical engineer is continually being confronted with new problems; the issues of design are more finely balanced in this than any other field of engineering and the consequences of a mistake are more serious. The work involves technology and design; control and electronics; manufacturing engineering; aircraft engineering; maintenance and development. Being a relatively young branch of engineering, developments in the aerospace industry are closely related to innovations in materials, power-plants, aerodynamics, electronics and systems and also advanced analytical and design techniques. Other industries apart from the aerospace industry also place a high value on the detailed knowledge of the aeronautical engineer, particularly in aerodynamics, lightweight structures and software engineering. These industries include: the automotive and formula 1 industry, the power plant industry, environmental agencies and the petrochemical industries.
