This oversight can lead to poor service to the educational program, depreciated safety of students, and lost opportunities for community use. School sport: fact or fiction?
    Phil Revell
    Q
:Why do I keep reading about schools selling sports fields? A : Twenty years ago, there was a real problem with sports fields being sold off. Since 1998, schools and local authorities have had to get ministerial approval before a land sale can go ahead, and the proceeds from a sale must be reinvested in sports or education facilities. No school may sell off all of its playing fields, only underused and useless land. Of the 22 sports fields sold in 2002, half related to schools that were closed or closing. The 11 other sales that were approved led to: four new sports halls, one new all-weather pitch, an all-weather track, improved grass playing pitches and new changing facilities.
