Much has changed since Notre Dame fell to Friends, 46-22, in the opening game of the 1960-61 basketball season. The girls' blue jumpers and white sash belts have been replaced with V-neck tank tops and shorts. Today's style of play celebrates athleticism in ways seldom seen in that inaugural season. Even the rules have changed.
About the only thing that hasn't changed over the past 40-plus years is the venue itself - that game against Friends was the first played on what was then the new Towson campus. It's the same gym our girls use today, and it's showing clear signs of age.
Girls' sports today are flourishing. At Notre Dame, participation in sports and recreation activities is at record levels, and interest in new kinds of activities - martial arts, aerobics, yoga - is growing rapidly. These activities offer a range of important benefits for girls' physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The variety or Notre Dame's sports, fitness, and physical education opportunities fit well with the needs and expectations of today's girls. Now it's time to bring the School's athletics facilities up-to-date as well.
We took major steps in that direction with the 1999 Miracles campaign, which funded a number of changes that greatly benefited outdoor sports. The final step in this comprehensive upgrade is the addition of a new, $5 million Sports and Fitness Center.

IST is renowned throughout the world of IB schools as a leader in academics, year after year achieving results that place us among the cream of the crop. It has received perhaps more recognition, however, for its celebrated extra-curricular activities – and a large part of the after-school experience here at IST is our Sports Program. This year our school continues to expand on its perennially well-liked list of sporting activities offered – for the arrival of new teaching staff has brought with it, in addition to educational experience, a broader range of sporting skills and interests waiting to be shared and coached to eager students. This year students could take their pick of any one of the following activities (offers vary from campus to campus and from competitive to recreational):
• Football
• Basketball
• Softball
• Volleyball
• Cricket
• Netball
• Swim Team
• Swim Beginners • Water Aerobics Karate • Touch Rugby • Floor Hockey • Rock Climbing • Taekwondo • Circuit Training • Wrestling • Sailing • Diving Ballet • Athletics (Track and Field) In addition to these in-school activities, a team of students at the secondary school is selected every year for each of the two mountain climbing expeditions the school has to offer – the March expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro, and the May trek to the top of Mount Meru.

Activities provided to school students often extend to school carnivals and sports days, where there is a lot of variety and choice available. The activities are safe and supervised and, most importantly, promote the positive aspects of being involved in sport. School programs also provide a link to local sports clubs and the community. When these groups work together they give young people the chance to realise their sporting dreams. This is supported by the fact that more than 1000 schools have joined the Active Australia Schools Network. The following school case studies provide good examples of ideas. AEROBICS Aerobics is a fun and energetic sport providing students with flexibility, strength, power, co-ordination and balance skills. Approximately thirty students are selected to make up junior and senior teams to compete at the Milo Schoolaerobics State Championships in May. Prior to the competition the students are required to learn choreographed routines which include compulsory skills. Emphasis in aerobics is placed upon participation, co-operation, enjoyment, enhanced skill levels, self-esteem and confidence. ATHLETICS Athletics at Our Lady of Mercy College caters for the needs and interests of all students and focuses on personal best performances rather solely on winning. Therefore all students can be successful by doing their personal best. Students have the opportunity to join the athletics squad in semester one to represent the College at three different competitions organised by the Secondary Catholic Schools Association, the Mercy Schools Association and the GSSA. This sport emphasises the importance of school and team spirit and enables students to interact with students of all year levels.
BASKETBALL Basketball teams are selected to represent the College at the Secondary Catholic Schools competition, and two of the four teams also compete in the Catholic All Schools State Championships. This sport gives the students the opportunity to improve their hand-eye co-ordination and to develop confidence to execute basketball skills in a competitive situation. Development as a responsible team member and sportsmanship are of a prime importance in basketball at the College.

Mini-aerobics classes keep primary pupils motivated and reduce truancy
Denis Campbell, sports news correspondent

The Observer

Pupils are doing mini-aerobics sessions beside their desks while wearing their school uniforms in the latest initiative to tackle rising childhood obesity. Ministers are so impressed by the success of turning classrooms into makeshift gymnasiums, and giving children brief bursts of exercise before and during lessons, that they may urge schools nationwide to adopt the unorthodox approach.
