SITE MAP HOME LA Fitness has grown significantly during the years since it was founded by current, Chief Executive, Fred Turok, Jeremy Taylor and David Turner in 1990. Its business philosophy is to provide first class facilities and service, as well as the motivation for people of all ages, shapes and sizes to get as fit as they realistically can in a vibrant friendly environment. Fred, Jeremy and David met in 1990 when they each owned a health and fitness club of their own and decided to jointly manage the sites with the vision of converting them into a group of health clubs in the future. Those three clubs are still part of LA Fitness today but it was in August 1996, with the purchase of a fourth club, Isleworth, when the brand LA Fitness was developed. Isleworth was already named LA Fitness by its previous owners and due to its great reputation it was decided to adopt the name. The name LA Fitness was given a new look, using a jumping figure in a vibrant purple colour and by the end of 1996, the four existing sites were re branded and renovated and a fifth club was purchased in Golders Green. With two more clubs added to the Group in 1997, LA Fitness entered the Top 10 UK Operators of Health and Fitness clubs. 1998 saw a further growth to ten clubs and for the first time expanded with sites outside the M25 motorway. However, it was in 1999 when LA Fitness started to step up its rollout programme and took strides to becoming a leading health and fitness operator when it added a further six clubs and made its debut on the London Stock Exchange. Over the course of the next four years the Group more quadrupled in size before slowing its rollout at the end of 2003 to take stock and focus on the existing sites in response to the more challenging trading environment.

P eople follow three paths to good health: doctor, diet, and exercise. Our path to the doctor involves the greatest expense, $1,035 billion in 1996, or almost 1/7th of the Gross National Product. Over 60% of these visits involved medication, and there were over 70 million surgeries (source CDC). However, there would be less expense, trauma, and tragedy if we prevented many of these medical problems. According to the American Medical Association, 60% of Americans are physically inactive. According to U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, the number of people at risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and stroke is increasing, and 50% of Americans are overweight. He said that improved nutrition along with 30 minutes of exercise five times a week could reduce cardiovascular illnesses and deaths by 50% and colorectal cancer by 40% (source CNN, June 11, 1999).

Aerobic exercise uses large muscle groups rhythmically and continuously and elevates the heartrate and breathing for a sustained period. Common examples include walking, jogging/running, swimming, rowing, stairclimbing, bicycling, cross-country skiing, step and dance exercise classes, roller skating, and the more continuous forms of tennis, racquetball and squash. Care and consideration should be used in selecting types (modes) of aerobic exercise. Depending on your goals, physical condition and injury/illness history, different types may prove to be preferential for your particular situation. However, in general, it is a good idea to "cross train". i.e., alternate between and among several appropriate exercises. This strategy reduces the chances of overuse injuries, imposes a more balanced conditioning stimulus and may enhance enjoyment. Specifically, it is important to alternate forms of high impact exercises (running, dance exercise, tennis, racquetball, squash) with low/moderate impact aerobic exercises (walking, swimming, stairclimbing, step classes, rowing, cross-country skiing). Prudent advice is no more than every-other-day for high-impact activities; perhaps less if you are overweight, deconditioned or you have an injury history or current problems with feet, ankles, knees, hips or low back.
