61. Fit For Life Lesson Plan
Fitness Center to include aerobic and muscular strength and endurance (aerobiccapacity) equipment. This lesson plan is funded, in part by
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/teachers/lessonplans/health/fitness/fitforlife
Design and Implement a Personal Fitness Plan OVERVIEW:
The NASPE national standards in physical education indicate a need for "students to exhibit a physically active lifestyle" and understand that "physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction." The goal of education is to facilitate a learning environment that encourages learning for all and provides opportunities for students to engage in, apply, synthesize and evaluate ones learning. The goal of the physical educator is to provide an avenue for students to participate in and establish lifetime health and fitness habits and goals. Once the teacher has provided instruction in a fitness center on the FITT principle, components of fitness, overload principle, specificity, safety and proper technique of all equipment, motivational and monitoring techniques and strategies, it is time to move from guided practice to independent practice. The overall goal is having all students through self - evaluation, create and implement a personal fitness plan to be carried out over ten physical education classes. Estimated Time:
This unit is approximately 12 - 15 classes. Students will need to know proper technique and safety of all fitness room equipment prior to the unit of designing and implementing a fitness plan to be recorded in a journal over ten class periods.

Title - Skipping for aerobics and dance
By - Laurie Kavanagh
Primary Subject - Health / Physical Education
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - Grades 4 to 6
The object of these lessons is to increase aerobic fitness and also use music to develop patterns of movement and dance. In British Columbia, we have a wonderful program called "Jump Rope For Heart", which is a part of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The activities described lead to a whole-school event day when teams of mixed grades try to jump for a total of one hour. We raise funds for this society. However, the activities are good for just plain fitness! Material: Class set of good skipping ropes. Good rock music to motivate the kids. Whistle for the teacher. If possible, posters of different skills and tricks for skipping (including long ropes and Double Dutch) Lesson(s): Begin by allowing the students to pick up the ropes and try some basic skipping. Put on a great music tape and let them try out some moves. You will quickly know who needs help and who is competent!

Well-designed sequences of challenging physical activity can lay important foundations for physical health and well-being. Physical activity also contributes to psycho-social development. Or physical activities can simply be used for fun!... more about the benefits of physical activity.
Fun physical warmup. In a circle, everyone starts as a small seed, then slowly sprouts and grows, eventually flowering towards the sun. Repeat, getting faster each time, leading eventually to seeds in unison jumping into the air and letting out loud "ahhhs"! Chicken Stretch A physical warmup activity with humorous twist. Demo 3 different stretches which, when put together, turns you into a squawking chicken (hen). Works with any age. Name Pantomime Each person chooses an action-word to go with their name (e.g., "Swimming Sam"), then shows the action to the group who repeat it. Whole-body way to introduce oneself & learn people's names. Stand on 1 Leg Competition Ask everyone to stand on one leg. This is an excellent assessment of ankle strength, balance, and psychological centredness. Ask who can be the last one left standing? Consider non-contact (more meditative) or contact versions (e.g., hopping warfare). Swap legs and try again.

Junior Aerobics Kidsports scores a "first," opening fun and fitness centers for children around the world. Twenty-five years ago our kids were riding their bikes all over town, playing sand lot ball games, enjoying recess and physical education classes at school, participating in all sorts of organized sports programs and, in most cases, were in pretty good physical shape. During that same time, their parents were storing up tons of unwanted fat due to the inactivity of the "good life." Today, the worm has turned, as adults enjoy the results of the "fitness boom," a la fitness centers, health clubs, racquetball, aerobics, jogging, special diets, weight reducing resorts and salons, body wraps, toning machines and the list goes on and on. All of the above are almost exclusively geared to the adult market. The end result, mom and dad are in great shape, while their children are experiencing a fitness horror story as they are fatter and flabbier than ever before.

A Turtle Lesson Plan for K-1 Photos of Activities and Materials PFA in the Lynch-Bustin Elementary School We are in our third year of Project Fit America. It has been a means for the students to renew an interest in physical fitness while giving them the opportunity to gain status and increase self-esteem. Our otherwise bare hallway walls are adorned with names of students reaching the standards for Station Stars Challenge and fitness clubs. Students can't wait until it's their turn to try to make it in the clubs and earn ribbons and recognition. Each year more and more students are taking part. This year we have 2 possible station stars challenge national records. Our school was very fortunate to receive the P.F.A. grant. It has been a tremendous supplement to my program. It has made me a more effective teacher and has had a significant impact on student morale and student attitude towards fitness. After watching their peers master station after station, the less fit kids realized just how out of shape they are. Many went home and practiced only to return and show progress on several stations.
