Forthcoming Publications Discovering Literacy: Access Routes to Written Culture for a Group of Women in Mexico

    by Judy Kalman
    UIE, 2005 – ca. 160 pp. - ISBN 92-820-1137-2
Winner of the 2002 International Award for Literacy Research This winner of the prestigious UIE International Award for Literacy Research examines the many routes which a group of Mexican women living in a small town on the edge of Mexico City has taken to full participation in written culture. The work is full of insights into the daily use of literacy as these women live their lives in their community. It draws a number of important conclusions regarding the significance of literacy in its local context for adult education.
Urban Literacy: Communication, Identity and Learning in Development Contexts
    Ed.: Alan Rogers
UIE, 2005 – ca. 300 pp. – ISBN 92-820-1145-3 Views on development have long focused on the status of the rural poor living in villages dominated by traditional economic, political and social patterns.Recent discussions of poverty reduction, however, have succeeded in drawing attention to the role played by the inhabitants of cities and towns in the dynamics of development. This volume advances these discussions by thematizing the relation of urbanization and literacy, literacy practices in urban settings, and literacy and livelihoods. The fruit of a two-year research project, this collection presents case studies from as variets of countries complemented by analyses which aim at developing a more refined understanding of what literacy can mean in urban settings. This work should command the attention of researchers, policy-makers and practitioners concerned with adult literacy and adult education and their manifold and subtle interconnections with pressing issues of economic, political and social development.

    Approaches to adult education
    2005, 151 p. ISBN: 92-9088-194-1
US$ 12.00 Text also available in Spanish Globalisation and the new technologies have had a direct impact on the world of work and have made it necessary to rethink training supply and methods. In this compendium of papers and presentations of Professor Rolf Arnold we can get a glimpse of what he calls "new critical approaches" to the training of adults. The expression "approaches" is highly significant: it refers to the temporal and relative value of epistemological reflections in an age marked by the rapid obsolescence of knowledge and the loss of occupational identity by the subjects of the training. In other words, individuals must face changing scenarios in labour itineraries that go beyond and through the classic concept of occupation. TABLE OF CONTENTS PREFACE 1. FUNDAMENTALS

Social developments influencing adult educat ion strategy
Finnish society is facing a major structural change. Like many European countries, Finland has a rapidly greying population, owing to the relative growth in the number of people over 55 years of age. The reason for this is that the post-war generation is much larger than the subsequent age groups. In the labour market, this greying will result in a difficulty to replace the exit due to the retirement of the large age groups. Another important factor for the structural change is that, although the level of education has been constantly growing among the Finnish adult population, the increase in education and training has not been evenly distributed among all population groups. This has resulted in a significant difference in the level of education between older and younger generations. As regards secondary qualifications, there is a particularly large difference between the age brackets 55-64 and 45-54. About half of the population over 55 years of age are untrained and only one third in the 45-54 age bracket. In younger age groups, 84% of young men and 87% of young women have at least upper secondary qualifications.
