86. Seattle Goodwill
The adult Basic education Program is supported in part by generous How arethe adult Basic education and Employment and Training programs related?
http://www.seattlegoodwill.org/AdultEd/intro.shtml
Adult Basic Education Program At Seattle Goodwill, literacy education has been a top priority since 1985 when we recognized the link between low level literacy skills and underemployment. We realized that our Employment and Training Program trainees needed basic education classes to establish a foundation for the job skills they were acquiring. In response, we added a literacy component to address these needs. This modest literacy program evolved into our current Adult Basic Education Programs. Last year, 3,060 people came to our Learning Centers in Bellingham, Mount Vernon and Seattle to get help reaching their educational goals. Adult Basic Education students come from diverse backgrounds, with varying levels of education; Sixty percent have less than a high school diploma, and twenty-five percent have very limited formal education. Over ninety percent have never touched a computer prior to enrollment. Our adult learners represent thirty-four cultures from Cambodia to Somalia to Ukraine and range in age from eighteen to over sixty.

Questions and Answers about Assessment and Adult ESL
CAELA staff member, Carol Van Duzer, talks about why it is important for adult ESL programs to have comprehensive and assessment and evaluation plans. Read more.
Question of the Month: What are SPLs and how are they related to the National Reporting System (NRS)? Answer: The Student Performance Levels (SPLs) are descriptions of English language proficiency levels for adult non-native speakers of English. The SPLs were developed in the mid-1980s as part of the Mainstream English Language Training (MELT) project under the Office of Refugee Resettlement of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Our Fellowship
We are one of 55 Canadian Unitarian congregations, and one of seven in the Greater Toronto Area. We meet weekly at 55 St. Phillips Road in Etobicoke, in a Tudor-style stone house that is readily accessible by public transportation.
Regular Sunday Services
are held at 10:30am from September through June. We offer a variety of programs and activities through the year including adult discussion groups, orientation workshops, potluck dinners, and music appreciation get-togethers. Summer social events have included games nights, brunches and barbeques.
Our Purpose
"The purpose of this Fellowship shall be to bring religious liberals into closer relationship with one another, and to unite them in the quest for the highest values in religion and in life. Members of this organization, while free to hold diverse beliefs concerning the nature of God, people and the universe are committed to the preservation of personal integrity, to the continuing search for truth through critical inquiry, and to the obligation to work for the greater good of all humanity." 96. Dyslexia Research Institute
Woodland Hall Academy, Tallahassee, Florida organization providing diagnostic testing, academic and tutorial programs, advocacy and adult education.
http://www.dyslexia-add.org/
Since 1975, the goal of the Dyslexia Research Institute, Inc. has been to change the perception of learning differences, specifically in the area of dyslexia and attention deficit disorders (ADD). With proper recognition and intervention, dyslexics and individuals with ADD become successful individuals using their talents and skills to enrich our society. They may take their place alongside other dyslexics/ADDs, such as Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, and Nelson Rockefeller. Ten to fifteen percent of the US population has dyslexia, yet only five out of every one hundred dyslexics are recognized and receive assistance. Approximately 60% of individuals diagnosed with attention deficit disorders are also dyslexic, however, their learning and language differences are often unrecognized because only the behavioral aspects of ADD are addressed. Without the proper diagnosis and help, many of these dyslexics and ADD individuals are only functionally literate, and are part of the forty-four million adults with only the lowest level of literacy. This limits their ability to find jobs and function independently within their communities. The Dyslexia Research Institute mission is to change these statistics by providing appropriate identification and training.
