Faye Houston The Adult and Community Education Program in Richland School District One has been in existence for more than 30 years. This program provides educational services for adults according to the purposes set forth in the Workforce Investment Act and in accordance with all state and federal laws and regulations. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated by improving the academic skills of adults and families, as measured by the number of adults earning high school diplomas and GEDs each year and the gains achieved by adults functioning below eighth-grade educational level. Richland One Adult and Community Education operates a full range of programs throughout the calendar year, during both the day and evening. The regular session operates for 35 weeks, from August to May. A summer program for high school diploma, GED and EL is offered during June and July.

Adult Basic Education
The State Board has the responsibility for administering the Adult Basic Eduction Program for the state of Mississippi. This program is designed to;
  • enable adults to acquire the basic education skills necessary for functional literacy; provide adults with sufficient basic education to enable then to benefit from job training and retaining programs and to retain productive employment so that they might more fully enjoy the benefits and responsibilities of citizenship; and enable adults who so desire to continue their education to at least the level of completion of secondary school.

Workforce Development has become a major theme for economic progress in virtually all states. What should be Adult Education's role in workforce initiatives? Over the past three years the fourteen southern states in DAEL's Area II have experienced major growth in workforce activities. We have been collecting information on these developments since 1995. Reports indicate that all southern states have introduced some kind of Workforce Development initiative, and a large majority of them include the state adult education office in the planning and implementation process. Other southern states have, over time, developed programs that will become major components of the workforce equation; workplace education, and welfare reform efforts are included. A number of states have passed workforce development legislation, while others have relied on governor's executive orders or other non-legislative measures. Southern state workforce initiatives tend to share common goals:
  • Development of long-range plans for Workforce Development / Education Recommendations to the governor on the role of adult education as part of statewide workforce efforts
States are also using similar structures for Workforce Development Councils, with individual state accommodations. Adult education offices get involved in Workforce Development initiatives in a variety of ways. For example:

St. Johns River Community College offers adult education classes for students who wish to improve their basic educational skills and/or prepare to earn a Florida High School Diploma through the General Educational Development (G.E.D.) program. The program consists of:

Master's Degree Program The Master of Science program in Adult Education is the only graduate program of its kind in northern New England. Originally established in 1972 to meet the region's need for trained public school administrators of adult education programs, the program today prepares adult educators who work in a variety of organizational and community settings. Today's students are teachers and administrators in higher education as well as in non-school settings including hospitals, recreation agencies, businesses, community and human service organizations. They work as trainers, teachers, staff development specialists, administrators, program designers, program directors, organizational change agents and consultants. A master's degree is offered through on-line courses so that students from around the state may enroll. The program requires 42 credits of coursework. Students must also submit a professional portfolio to complete their degree.

The majority of the required coursework for the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Adult Education program is available on the Rochester campus. To accommodate the busy schedules of educators, many courses are offered evenings, Saturdays, and during the summer. back to top
Program Curriculum
The M.A. in Adult Education program emphasizes research and theory culminating in a written thesis (Plan A) or extensive research project or paper (Plan B). There are no language requirements. The final exam is oral. Students have seven years to complete their degree beginning with the first coursework used in the program, and must maintain a 2.80 overall GPA. PLAN A
Complete a minimum of 34 credits of: 5000 level courses, including 14 credits in the major, 6 credits in the related field, 10 thesis credits and electives as needed.
