Significant Points
  • Many adult literacy and remedial and self-enrichment teachers work part time and receive no benefits; unpaid volunteers also teach these subjects.
  • Opportunities for teachers of English as a second language are expected to be very good, due to the expected increase in the number of residents with limited English skills who seek classes.
  • Demand for self-enrichment courses is expected to rise with growing numbers of people who embrace lifelong learning and of retirees who have more free time to take classes.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Self-enrichment teachers teach courses that students take for pleasure or personal enrichment; these classes are not usually intended to lead to a particular degree or vocation. Self-enrichment teachers may instruct children or adults in a wide variety of areas, such as cooking, dancing, creative writing, photography, or personal finance. In contrast, adult literacy and remedial education teachers remedial or adult basic education (ABE) , which is geared toward adults whose skills are either at or below an eighth-grade level;

Tracking Sea Turtles: Lessons in Saving an Endangered Species
Put on your scuba gear and grab your camera we're going on an undersea adventure! Endangered sea turtles are in need of our attention, and the Internet offers some great activities for learning about sea turtles and even tracking their movements! Are you ready to make some turtle "trax"? Canadians Peter Bennett and Ursula Keuper-Bennett from Mississauga, Ontario, are the creators of a Web site, called Turtle Trax , totally devoted to the preservation of sea turtles. Keuper-Bennett explains what prompted the couple to create the Web site: "We thought of doing a sea turtle Web page very early in 1995. By then, we had spent eight summers underwater with the same group of Hawaiian green sea turtles. Many individual animals we had known for years. Most were also sick with a tumor disease called fibropapilloma.

I teach a Career Transitions class at a community center in the town of Hamden, CT. It is an 18-week course. There are 18 students in my class. One is a high school graduate. Six are in the local high school credit diploma program. They will receive 2 and 1/2 credits upon successful completion of the course. The remaining 11 students are pursuing their high school diploma. Five should obtain these diplomas in May. The remaining six will continue working on the improvement of their skills, with the goal of a high school diploma in the future. Most of the students in my class are employed, some with two jobs. All are interested in finding better employment through training programs and/or certificate or degree educational opportunities at the local community college. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 1:00, in this particular course, and all students are required to attend Monday and Wednesday ABE classes or Adult High School classes.

Ask each student to write down his or her goals for adulthood. Students should consider educational options, career choices, health, marriage, and parenthood, among other things. Explain that they will plot a course for the future. This course will be a "road map" to help them reach their desired life goals. Included in each roadmap should be the following:
