Anghiari 3-6 marzo 2005 Biographical research and practice as a setting for personal and social change
Report
An international opening for the Libera Università dell'Autobiografia
  • When : 3-6 March 2005 Where : at the Castle of Sorci, in Anghiari What : the Annual Conference of the European Network "Life Histories and Adult Education", belonging to the larger European Society for Research in Adult Education (ESREA). With the patrociny of Università di Milano Bicocca Who : 60 scholars, researchers, practitioners in adult education, coming from all over Europe and more (see the List of Participants). Organizers : Laura Formenti and Linden West Steering Committee : Linden West, Laura Formenti, Peter Alheit, Agnieszka Bron, Duccio Demetrio, Loretta Fabbri
My story (if anyone wants to tell his/her, please do that…): Under a real storm of snow, participants and organizers arrive at the Castle. They come from long far, they are quite afraid and tired, full of questions, puzzled by the situation (thank you Lynn). In addition, there are only a few of them: others will arrive in the night, or the day after, and will tell their incredible adventures. People from the North have a very clear image of Italy, as a sunny and warm place. THIS is really confusing! The Conference begins with a participative style: a proposal is made to help conversations, to bring people to talk one another. Images and concepts of change are explored and exchanged. This is a sketchy approach to change, this concept that will be talked about for three days. How does our idea of change influence our work? A theme that is challenging for every educational action. Auto/biography (thank you Linden) may foster and shape social/personal changes, but in what conditions?

Albert Bandura
Biographical Sketch Albert Bandura was born on December 4, 1925, in Mundare Young Bandura's elementary and high school years were spent at the one and only school in town , which being woefully short of teachers and resources left learning largely to the students' own initiative. For example, the entire curriculum of his high school mathematics class comprised a single textbook, which one beleaguered teacher endeavored to read ahead of her small but bright class of students. As a prank, the students conspired and stole the trigonometry book, which reduced the teacher to desperate pleading and homework concessions so that the class could resume. Two teachers handled the entire high school curriculum. "The students had to take charge of their own education," Bandura recalls. "Very often we developed a better grasp of the subjects than the overworked teachers." Although far off the path to academe, the school spawned an atypical class of graduates, virtually all of whom went on to attend universities throughout the world. "The content of most textbooks is perishable," observed Bandura, "but the tools of self-directedness serve one well over time." The summer after young Bandura completed high school, he worked in the far North, at
