Adult Education

The concept of education and training denotes formalised learning. In Danish tradition an education leading to formal qualifications is often supplemented with adult classes and popular education not ending in exams. The dividing line between the two is not easy to define: professional training develops the personality, and education with personal development as its aim contributes at the same time to practical proficiency. There are some 3000 schools and other educational establishments in Denmark. Of these, the folkeskole (state primary and lower secondary school) accounts for c. 1700, private primary schools c. 400 and gymnasier (upper secondary schools) and HF-courses (Higher Preparatory Examination courses) rather more than 150. The figures also include c. 225 efterskoler (continuation schools), c. 100 folk high schools, just over 200 vocational schools and about 225 further and higher educational establishments. The Ministry of Education is the supreme supervisory authority. Expenditure on education has grown rapidly since the 1950s, from just over 2% of GDP to just under 7% in 1995. In 1998 total public expenditure on education and training was c. 88 billion kroner (state education grants and loans included), corresponding to c. 13.5% of all public expenditure. Of a year group in the folkeskole (1998), c. 95% continue in the education system, c. 53% in general and vocational upper secondary school type education and c. 41% in vocational training (EUD). C. 77% of a year group gain practical qualifications through basic vocational education or various kinds of advanced post-compulsory education.

http://www.wea-yn.org.uk/About/about.asp
The Workers' Educational Association offers adult education to as wide a range of people as possible. Unlike most other education providers, the WEA is governed by its voluntary members.
Drawn from all walks of life, our voluntary members, most of whom are WEA students themselves, help decide at local level what courses should be run, and when and where they should be held. These decisions are realised with the aid of a small group of paid, professional staff, whose job is to assist in getting courses up and running.
This means that the WEA is among the most democratic of adult education organisations, placing students at the centre of its affairs, and allowing ordinary people to play an active role in their local community and have a real say in what happens in their village, town or city. The types of courses we lay on are very varied. Some courses are free, and others have to be paid for (-it all depends how we can get funding for them). Some courses are targeted at particular groups (for example, parents with young children), whereas others are aimed at the public at large. We do our best to take education out to where it is most needed, in amongst the local community, rather than expecting people to come to us. Consequently, a WEA course can be set up almost anywhere! -in clubs, community centres, village halls, schools, pubs, or where people work.

Founded in 1957, and initially sponsored by Wayne State University and the University of Michigan, UCAE was one of the few non-degree, university-level programs in the country with joint institutional sponsorship. With faculty from both institutions, the Center offered a wide range of courses for adults in the humanities, communications, the behavioral sciences, and continuing education in the professions. Eastern Michigan University was a sponser from 1962 until July of 1970. The mandates of UCAE were to conduct non-credit educational programs; assist other institutions to do so; exert adult educational leadership; develop and use mass communications media appropriately; involve other campus units of both universities in its continuing education activity; encourage research in continuing education; undertake community development; and conduct experimental programs. Major client groups served included citizen leaders of poverty programs; senior citizens; professionals and paraprofessionals in almost all professions; housewives; women returning to the labor force; Detroit public school board members and teacher aides; parents of retarded children; community agencies coping with problems in mental hygiene, drug addiction, death and dying, and veterans.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The records of the College of Continuing Education partially document the activities of the College from 1937 to 1980, although there are some records dating into the 1990's. There are four series in the collection: college level records, Adult Education records, Conference Bureau records, and prison programs. None of the series is comprehensive, but each contains some of the following types of records: correspondence, reports, schedules of classes and workshops, newsletters, programs, and committee files. HISTORICAL SKETCH The College of Continuing Education is unique among the colleges at Northern. It has neither a faculty nor a list of classes. The College administers off-campus credit courses for the other colleges throughout the northern Illinois region. Its courses include all those offered by academic departments and it enlists the services of the entire University faculty.
