International Adoption Non-Relative Guide
A Guide for Ontario Families
Introduction
(At the end of the Introduction, you will be able to download a Word or PDF version of the full publication). This booklet deals with the process of adopting a child from outside Canada who is not related to you. If you are planning to adopt a child who is related to you, please see International Adoption of A Relative (A Guide for Ontario Families). Adoption is the process that gives a child a new family. It is intended to provide permanence and security for the child. The most important consideration in the adoption process is the child's welfare. A successful adoption requires maturity, empathy, understanding and patience from the adoptive parents. This booklet is intended to provide you with information about the process of adoption, and to alert you to some of the challenges that lie ahead.

Adoption and School Issues How Adoption Impacts Children at School Preschool/Kindergarten Elementary School Junior and Senior High School ... Increasing the Adoption Sensitivity of School Personnel Like all children, adopted children spend a good portion of their waking hours in school. Because school is such an important aspect of children's lives, adoptive parents, like all parents, want their child's school experience to be a positive one. When your child has a problem at school, you might find yourself wondering: Is this a problem related to adoption, or is it a "generic" developmental, educational, or school system problem common to all children? This factsheet will look at three areas. The first is how adoption impacts a youngster in school. We will discuss if, when, how, and why to talk about adoption with school personnel. Second, we will examine some specific educational problems that are common to adopted children and how to advocate for the educational and support services that they might need. Third, we will suggest ways to help students, teachers, principals, and other school personnel to become more sensitive to adoption issues. At the end of this factsheet there is an information sheet on positive adoption language that can be given to school personnel. There is also a resource section that provides names of consultants with expertise in adoption and school issues, adoption training curricula and programs, relevant audiovisual materials, and a bibliography. National Adoption Information Clearinghouse staff members would appreciate hearing about any other resources in the area of adoption and school issues.
