Things to Consider
Adoption Issues Adopted children may grow up not knowing many things that others take for granted. For instance, who their birth parents are, who they look like. Are their parents right or left-handed? These are often unanswered questions that leave blanks in the history of their life. Adopted children often have mixed feelings about who they are. They may wonder:
  • Who are my birth parents?
  • The Lifestory Book
The Lifestory Book preserves an adopted child's history and helps them understand their early years. Lifestory Book Manuscript for the Lifestory Creating a Lifestory Book
  • Did my birth parents love me? Did I do something wrong? Why didn't my parents keep me? Was I a bad child? If I was good would you have kept me? What do my birth parents look like? Who do I look like? Where did these feet come from? How come I have red hair and no one else in the family does?

Did you hear the news about Angelina Jolie adopting a baby and Rosie O'Donnell coming out of the closet as a gay parent? Angelina Jolie and her hubby, Billy Bob Thornton, have adopted a seven month-old baby boy from Cambodia. Angelina's son is with her in Africa where she's working on a movie. Although the new parents couldn't be happier with their adopted son, Maddox, the couple can't bring him into the US at this time. The US Embassy hasn't approved the adoption and Maddox doesn't have an American visa so he's not allowed into the country. In December of 2001, the US government banned the adoption of babies from Cambodia cuz of illegal activity involving the sale of babies to orphanages (and in some cases kidnapping.) Adoption applications that were submitted before December are being processed (on a case by case basis) to make sure the kids really are orphans. According to US Ambassador, Kent Wiedemann, it could take between a couple of weeks to a couple of months before Maddox's case is sorted out. There are a lot of kids in Cambodia who need a home. What will happen to these children now that the US has banned adoption from Cambodia? I don't think there should

The cost of secrecy - post adoption issues
Author:
Margaret McDonald, Post Adoption Resource Centre
Originally published/presented: The child as a client - The adoption perspective conference, Griffith University, April 1995
Introduction
So that we're all clear as to what we are talking about it may be helpful to start off with some dictionary definitions: From the Shorter Oxford Dictionary
  • Secrecy: The quality of being secret or of not revealing secrets; the action, habit or practice of keeping things secret.
  • Secret: Kept from the public knowledge or from the knowledge of persons specified. From the Macquarie Dictionary
  • Secrecy: The state of being secret or concealed; privacy, retirement, seclusion.
  • Secret: Made or negotiated without the knowledge of others. All of these definitions show us different aspects of secrecy, of themselves carrying no value judgement. We are all aware of useful and necessary secrets, and that the action, habit or practice of keeping things secret can be in both personal and professional relationships a most valuable attribute. From the title of my paper you will gather that I plan today to speak principally about the adverse effects of secrecy, basing these observations of our practice at the Post Adoption Resource Centre and the experience of our many clients who comment on the oppressive influence of secrecy in their lives.

A Colleague-to-Colleague Handbook for Maternity, Paternity, and Adoption issues for Faculty Members at WPI

This handbook is dedicated to Giancarlo Nicoletti, whose short life demonstrates the fragility and importance of taking care of our children and providing resources to those who orchestrate their care.

    Preface
An announcement of the intention to develop this handbook and the need for faculty to sign up for confidential interviews was sent to faculty during the summer of '99. A. Tracy Hassett of Human Resources conducted the interviews and compiled the responses. A copy of the questions asked can be found at the end of this handbook. Comments from the ten faculty interviewed are compiled here: six women and four men. They come from many different departments, and had their children both recently and in the more distant past. We consider this to be a living document - one that should reflect new experiences and stories to share. If you have comments or additions, please contact Tracy Hassett or myself. All additions will be confidential. We will also put this document on the web, thereby creating an even better resource for our community, and the world.

Case Study ID: Title: Adoption Issues of Business-to-Business Internet Commerce in European SMEs Date: January 2002 Author: Ada Scupola, Department of Social Sciences, Roskilde University, Denmark Publisher: Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences Description: This article presents the preliminary findings from an explorative case study concerning barriers, benefits and use of SMEs adoption of business-to-business Internet commerce. The main findings were that SMEs embrace the Internet mainly just by chance (J-B-C); the government and public administration are seen as the main change agents in the adoption and diffusion of Internet commerce among SMEs; cost is not an important factor in the adoption decision; setting up an advanced home page with a shopping basket for buying and selling on the Internet is often seen as a minus rather then a plus for competitive advantage; complementary factors among which digital imaging technologies and spreading of English as a common business language have to be developed in order to increase the value of Internet commerce to small business. Shakespearean Scholar Tackles Adoption Literature
    Sophocles to Kingsolver represent adoption
Marianne Novy By Patricia Lomando White Novy is at work on a new book that deals with the way adoption is represented by authors ranging from Sophocles to Shakespeare, from George Eliot to contemporary novelist Barbara Kingsolver. She is particularly interested in the contrast presented within the works of an individual author, citing Eliot and Kingsolver as examples. In addition to authors already mentioned, the book will discuss 19th-century British novels, contemporary American novels dealing with adoptees in midlife and later, and contemporary American drama. In the mid-1970s, Novy attended a lecture by psychologist Betty Jean Lifton, author of Twice Born, Memoirs of an Adopted Daughter, and was quite influenced by her presentation. Novy, who found her own birth mother in the late 1970s and also learned that she has seven half brothers living in Wisconsin, acknowledged that she did not see the similarities she had expected when she and her mother met, even though she assumed that there would be many similarities, a fact often emphasized in literature, said Novy. According to Novy, another reason for the interest in such questions is the number of legal cases that address the issue of parenthood. This issue occurs not only in adoption cases but also in cases dealing with artificial insemination, surrogate motherhood, egg implantation, stepparenting, and foster parenting.
