From the Heart of a Birth Father
Adoption Issues
By: Dr. Noah H. Kersey Ph.D. A day never goes by that I do not think of the son that I have never met.
Although it has been 37 years, the experience of his conception is forever embedded in my memory.
His mother and I both lived in an orphanage in Tampa, Florida . She was of Yugoslavian descent and a classic beauty. As teenagers do, we "fell in love" and our passions took over. We became sexually intimate.
One night, I made the mistake of falling asleep in Ginny's bed and when the light came on and our house-father looked into the room, I panicked. At first it did not seem as if he saw me because he wore thick glasses but, in a short while it became evident that he had seen us together after all.
Later that morning I was called to the office and was informed that I would have to leave the orphanage, drop out of school, and work while going to night classes to finish high school or, join the Army as so many of the other teenagers were doing during the Vietnam era. They said Ginny would have to go to a foster home, and could not stay at the orphanage either.
The next day I had a talk with my high school band director and told him I was going to be leaving and, immediately, he talked to the Band Parents Association to see if someone would take me in. I was too embarrassed about my reason for leaving "The Home", as we called it, to tell anyone.

A work group charged with studying court delays and other adoption process obstacles has presented its final report to Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Maura D. Corrigan and Family Independence Agency (FIA) Director Nannette Bowler, the Court and FIA announced today.
As of July 31, 2003, 12,673 children were temporary wards of the court as a result of child protective proceedings, the work group report notes. As of that same date, a total of 19,490 children were in foster care. At the end of fiscal year 2002, Michigan had 4,615 permanent state wards available for adoption; 2,833 adoptions were finalized in FY 2002. More information about Michigan Adoption Day, including a list of participating courts, is available at: http://www.courts.michigan.gov/supremecourt/Press MichiganAdoptionDayIndex.htm. The work group, which Corrigan formed in cooperation with Bowler, was chaired by
Karen Tighe, Chief Judge of the Bay County Probate Court, and retired Probate Judge Donna Morris of Midland. As finally constituted, the group also included:

Adopting On Your Own
An Interview with Lee Varon
By Allison Martin Adopting on Your Own: The Complete Guide to Adopting as a Single Parent
What inspired you to write Adopting On Your Own? My inspiration for writing the book came from the hundreds of single people I've worked with. For many years I led workshops for single people who were exploring adoption. Not all the people I worked with became parents but all of them worked hard to make the decision regarding parenting. At the end of many of these workshops, people would often say, "You should write a book about this process". So finally, I did! Basically, the book follows a workshop format and, hopefully, guides people in making the decision that's right for them. What did you learn from writing this book? In the process of writing the book I learned that writing is almost as hard a job as parenting! But not quite. The book was a finite project, parenting never ends. I think the other thing it clarified for me is the many aspects that go into making a thoughtful, informed decision around adoption. There are aspects that are logistical and practical like deciding which type of adoption is right for you, but the more difficult aspects are the emotional ones. For example, looking at the type of person you are, your goals, how parenting will affect your life and then deciding whether to go forward. In the book, I offer many exercises to help people focus on these issues.

Four for Adoption: Issues, Theories, Studies and Practice It is exciting to have four very different new books on adoption. For too long there has been little in the literature reflecting changes and addressing such new issues in adoption as post-legal services, open adoption and disruption. Three of the books do just that while the fourth, a collection of H. David Kirk's adoption papers, reviews that social scientist's theories on adoption since the early 1950s. Starting with the collected papers, each book will be reviewed briefly to whet the reader's appetite for a new look at Kirk's theories, information on innovative models for services to older adoptees and studies on adoption disruption and openness, in adoption.
