Zelda Venter, Pretoria News (South African newspaper)
May 30 2005 at 11:08AM Read the original article here As the country celebrates Child Protection Week, the practice of inter-country adoptions will fall under the spotlight once again on Tuesday when a United States couple persist in their legal battle to eventually adopt four South African children. The couple will approach the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday in this regard, but the Johannesburg Child Welfare gave notice that it will enter the fray as a friend of the court to place the legal issues and commonly accepted practice for inter-country adoptions before court. Alarm bells sounded last year when the couple approached the court with the intention to get sole custody and guardianship over four South African children - a baby who was 11 months old at the time and a four-year-old, a six-year-old and a seven-year-old. Further concern was raised when it emerged that the mother of two of the children who were resident in a shelter had no idea that plans were afoot to take them to the US. MORE...

Adoption: What to expect at different ages
(keywords: adopt, adoptee, adoption, adopting, adoptive, agency, attorney, baby, birth, birthparent, child, infant, international, support)
Now that you have adopted a child and life-is beginning to settle down, you may find your thoughts moving to the future. When shall I tell my child that s/he is adopted? How will s/he feel about it? At what point will s/he want more information? What will s/he want to know from me? How can I help my child feel comfortable about being adopted? Whether children are adopted as infants or when they are older, whether they are healthy or have physical or psychological problems, their adoption is bound to influence their development. You need to understand how and why. Learning about the developmental stages of children and what can be expected in each stage is important to all new parents. When your child has been adopted, there are additional considerations. In these pages, we will be looking at specific issuesseparation, loss, anger, grief, and identityand show how they are expressed as your adopted child grows up. Some of these issues will be obvious in all stages of development; others surface at specific times. The more thoroughly you can understand how your child behaves and why, the more likely it is that you can be supportive and help your child to grow up with healthy self-esteem and the knowledge that s/he is loved. While the stages described below correspond generally to a child's chronological age, your child's development may vary significantly. Some children progress more quickly from one stage to another; others may continue certain behaviors long past the time you would have expected. Still others may be substantially delayed in entering and moving through new stages. Many characteristics of adolescence, for instance, may not even appear until your child's twenties and may persist until your child's identity has formed.

Adoption is an emotional experience. It is also a physical experience, a biological, and a psychological experience. I act as a facilitator for an adoption support group in Timmins Ontario. I am also what I call a 'friend' (and sometimes a self imposed facilitator) in the membership of an internet group called CANADopt In those roles, and in my own experiences, I have come to see the issues surrounding the Adoption Experience as a multidimensional thing. What many call the adoption 'Traid' is more than a two dimensional triangle of birthparent (bparent), adoptee (or bchild), and adoptive parent (aparent). Adoption affects those three major groups of people, but beyond those immediate beings, there are a myriad of people and issues. These pages attempt to introduce you to some of those issues...

My husband and I adopted our son from Cambodia in January 1998. He was 3 months old then. He is 5 now. We also have a 7 year old and 21 month old both from China. There are so many resources for the Chinese adoptee, but not for those from Cambodia. I am looking for others in the St. Charles Missouri area who have adopted from Cambodia. And information on holidays, festivals, culture, and where to buy anything authentic Khamer. Kathy Kathy Cobillas

At the end of Fiscal Year 1996, there were more than 500,000 children in foster care. This number represents a 79% increase over the number of children in care in 1986. Approximately 110,000 of the children in foster care will not return to their birth families and will need adoption planning services. Given current trends, it is likely that the number of children in foster care who need adoptive families will continue to increase.
