Providing an Appropriate Education to Children with Attention Deficit Disorder
Clarification of Terms
Throughout this digest, ADD will be used to refer to "attention deficit disorder," or "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder" (ADHD). In the past, the term "minimal brain dysfunction" was also used.
Children with ADD
It is estimated that children with ADD constitute 3% to 5% of the current school-age population, which would represent 1.35 to 2.25 million children. Most experts agree that ADD is a neurobiological disorder that can have multiple causes. Research indicates that children with ADD are likely to have a biological relative with ADD. In addition, evidence also suggests that neurologic, neurochemical or, in some cases, toxic factors may be involved. Other factors such as medical conditions, medication side effects, familial functioning, or environmental conditions may exacerbate an existing disorder or contribute to the development of ADD-like problems in some children (Parker, 1992).

The Educational Implications of ADD/ADHD.

Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, most often referred to as ADD and ADHD, are terms commonly used in daily conversations, media reports and magazine articles. In schools, teachers frequently forecast increased activity levels and lack of attention on the part of students due to "spring fever" or the onset of winter holidays. Parents lament taking extended car trips because Tommy or Susie is just "too hyper." Committee members avoid being paired with Mr. X or Ms. Y because they "talk impulsively" all the time.
Defining ADD/ADHD
ADD and ADHD are terms associated with specific individual behaviors. In reality, the terms are not well understood (Armstrong, 1996). Reid, Maag and Vasa (1994) state that ADHD is 50 times more likely to be differentially diagnosed nosed in the U.S. than it is in Britain and France. How can such a discrepancy exist? Reid et al. (1994) cite the difference in orientation to the assumed etiology of ADHD due to the United States having assumed a medical-disease model while Britain and France have deemed ADHD to be

A few words on ADHD
ADHD is both under-diagnosed and over-diagnosed. Many bored gifted kids are misdiagnosed as having ADHD. The problem is that parents of gifted kids with ADHD are often told, especially on the gifted email lists, "your child doesn't really have ADHD, s/he's just a bored gifted child." My co-listowner and I founded the GT-Special email list because we needed a place where we could discuss our gifted/ADHD kids without having to constantly argue about whether or not our kids had ADHD.

***Caution*** This page attempts to simplify a very complex condition. While providing an overview, it lacks detail and depth. The reader is advised to investigate the topic in a more precise and in-depth manner.

School is often the first place where characteristics of ADD are noted or viewed as problematic. Often it is in that school setting that youngsters are first asked to stay seated for long periods of time, maintain extended attention to a live individual, persist on a task, or wait one's turn. Youngsters with ADD experience difficulties in the areas necessary for academic success: starting work assignments, completing tasks, interacting cooperatively with others, following directions, making smooth transitions, and managing multi-step tasks. Excessive activity levels, talkativeness, interrupting, fidgeting, active and out of seat behavior, and underdeveloped social skills may also be evident. A number of factors effect performance including time of day, amount of rest or fatigue, adequacy of supervision, adequacy of medication, and so forth. Since Dr. George Still first described "moral turpitude"

First Published Winter 1994 The Bright Ideas Resource Newsletter Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is often misunderstood. If a child is also diagnosed as hyperactive (ADHD), the youth professional or parent may find this child to be among the most perplexing and challenging to work with. Children diagnosed as ADD or ADHD are not "choosing" to be badly behaved or inattentive. Their problems have a physiologic basis. Medication can offer relief but other interventions can also help while building esteem and skills. Most kids are not systematically and comprehensively trained to be students, but it may be the child who has ADD/ADHD that experiences the most difficulty overcoming this lack of essential preparation to master specific school skills like focusing, walking down the aisle and sitting at a desk. Until sufficiently trained to perform school skills such as these, the student with ADD/ADHD may struggle in school. Here's some effective interventions.

National Poll of Educators Finds Schools Inadequately Prepared to Teach Attention Deficit Students
Asheville, NC January 1, 2002 A national survey of superintendents, directors, principals, and teachers performed by Unique Logic + Technology, Inc., finds that only 22% of the respondents believe their school accommodates the needs of ADD/HD students and only 19% indicated that their college or university adequately prepared them to teach these students. Unique Logic + Technology, Inc. manufactures the Play Attention integrated learning system ( www.playattention.com A Texas school administrator says, "I also see a need for the university to address this in teacher prep programs. It would be tremendously helpful for new teachers to have a factual base on ADD/ADHD, so they may dispel some of the myths that are associated with this disorder." A university educator responds, "When I was in school (graduate), people didn't really talk about ADD/HD. It was seen almost as a new diagnosis. Children were still "grouped" as LD. It appears that every 5 or so years we get a new vogue diagnosis. This further compounds the problem in that children are given a label simply because that's what people are studying at the time; sort of a you see what you want to see and get what you expect phenomenon. (If you are thinking ADD/HD, you'll come to a diagnosis of ADD/HD simply because that's what you expected.)"

Web Sites Special education teachers work with students-from toddlers to those in their early 20s-who have a variety of disabilities. Most special education teacher are found at the elementary, middle, and secondary school level. Special education teachers design and modify instruction to meet a student's special needs. Teachers also work with students who have other special instructional needs, including those who are gifted and talented. Many occupations today require a college educated individual who can write and speak well, solve problems, learn new information quickly and work well with others on a team. This means that college graduates use their education in a wide variety of fields, and your future career may relate more to your personal career interests, work values and transferable skills than any specific academic major. However, the following list contains a representative sample of current job titles of former Business Systems majors.Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. Students obtaining employment immediately upon graduation are usually those with the best college records and a willingness to relocate to find a job. Some of these jobs also require education beyond the bachelors level.
