INFORMATION ABOUT COMMON READING DISABILITIES
There are many myths about learning and reading disabilities. One is that individuals with such disabilities are not as intelligent as people who do not suffer from them. This idea is entirely untrue. Like everyone else, people with disabilities span over a range of intelligences. A second common myth about reading disabilities, in particular, is that individuals who have difficulty with reading should only be taught skills. This teaching approach works against the development of reading fluency, and it disables students even further. Even students with reading disabilities can read and can enjoy reading. They simply read differently. Understanding a little more about how such students read and learn differently can help people to overcome myths about such disabilities and can ensure that every student receives the right to read. Generally, disabilities affect a person's perceptions and interpretations of what they see and/or hear, and they may interfere with certain information links within the brain. People with disabilities can have difficulties using language, paying attention, acting appropriately in social situations and coordinating their bodies' movements. While there are three main categories of disabilitiesdevelopment, academic and Reading Department Main Page Ten Tips for Improving Reading Ten Tips on Improving Reading across Learning Disciplines (Students) Ten Tips on Improving Reading across Learning Disciplines (Teachers) ... Each of these disorders affects a student's interaction with language and can therefore severely affect a student's self-esteem regarding his or her use of language. A brief description of each of these disabilities follows:

e-bility Inclusive IT. One of the most exciting things about the Internet is its ability to cater to individual needs. According to SPELD NSW , specific learning difficulties (SLD) affects around 7% of the population, with dyslexia being the most common. People with dyslexia may have difficulty processing written information or numbers, relying on alternative modalities to assist them in understanding content on web sites. This article looks at ways of enhancing web accessibility and usability for people with reading difficulties from an individual's perspective. Developers also have a responsibility to design web sites that conform to internationally recognised accessibility standards, such as the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines . The developer's task is to make sure the site is written in "Plain Simple English" amongst other things - Another article for another time! The following suggestions will work best on web sites that are designed with accessibility in mind Customising your web experience: Common problems experienced by individuals with dyslexia when using the Internet include:
  • Small fonts Poor contrast backgrounds (either too low or too high) Large blocks of text Cluttered page layouts Animated images or blinking/moving text Automated page or form redirects Lots of capitals or italics Justified text (resulting in uneven spacing between words)

The BYTE Fiasco These are two short essays, presented together for reasons that will be clear when you finish reading them. I wrote the following disquisition on DYSLEXIA as a contribution to a discussion group; it seems to have survived some criticism by people I respect. It's not really a stand-alone essay but it's close enough. The original topic was why dyslexia was not bred out of the human race (Greg Cochran is part of the discussion group). There had been some speculation on what advantage if any dyslexia might confer in a non-reading society. DYSLEXIA The first thing is to agree on what "dyslexia" "is". In our reading consulting work "dyslexic" means a child that the local public school could not teach to read. The local school is likely to be using some "modern" system of "whole language" instruction that does not involve systematic phonics and considers systematic instruction to be "drill and kill". (It would be amusing to see how well inability to do math correlates with the diagnosis of dyslexia; many schools no longer require the addition and multiplication tables to be memorized by rote, greatly slowing the arithmetical progress of the students; such schools tend also to non-systematic "reading" instruction, treating English as an ideographic language. That produces a lot more 'dyslexics' than do schools that use 'drill and kill' systematic phonics and 'sound it out' instruction.)

Reading lays the foundation for all other learning. Too many of our children struggle through school because they have not mastered basic reading skills. Research shows that if students cannot read well by the end of third grade. their chances for success become significantly lower. In 1994, 40% of America's fourth graders failed to attain the basic level of reading and 70% of children fell below the proficient level on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Fortunately, we can address this problem, and President Clinton's America Reads Challenge has developed several strategies that should make a difference. In the coming year, you'll hear a lot about the first of these initiatives as tutors across the country are trained to provide high-quality help to young readers. Study after study finds that sustained individualized attention and tutoring after school and over the summer can help to raise reading levels. Volunteers, many of them college students, will add tutoring to their busy schedules in the coming semesters.

The normal paths to reading in the brain can be awakened, researchers report By Steven Reinberg
    HealthDay Reporter
THURSDAY, Feb. 12 (HealthDayNews) Specialized training can reorganize the brains of dyslexic children and help them read better, researchers report. "The idea is to really understand nature-nurture interaction; how the brain influences learning, but also how instruction influences the brain," says Virginia Berninger, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington's Center on Human Development and Disability.
Berninger is one of three dyslexia experts from the University of Washington scheduled to present their findings Feb. 13 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Seattle. Psychiatry has literally covered every base with its invented criteria. Some of the commonly seen psychiatric labels for children are: Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), [more recently called Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)], Minimal Brain Dysfunction (MBD), Learning Disability (LD), Impulse Disorder (ID) or Conduct Disorder (CD). And based on these criteria, millions of children around the world are placed on powerful, mind-altering drugs.
