The primary cause is dyslexia or one of its many variations, such as ADD or dysgraphia. Today's educational methods are limited when it comes to teaching basic literacy skills to students who have problems with reading, and writing and math. The school system is stacked against dyslexics from the start, because they are "real world" thinkers, using mainly pictures and concepts instead of mental sentences. They require special training to master the basics of written language easily. This doesn't mean they are stupid. Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, Edison, Churchill, Walt Disney, Whoopi Goldberg and Greg Louganis were considered "dummies" during their early years of school. They didn't suffer from learning disability, but teaching disability. Many teachers just don't know the right methods for presenting information in a form dyslexic and ADD children can assimilate. As a result, these children may be warehoused in "special ed" classes. The subsequent loss of self-esteem triggers the syndrome that makes dyslexia worse. Stress, confusion and heavy concentration only increase perceptual and attention problems. The harder a dyslexic struggles, the more difficult reading becomes.

20. A Single Cause For Learning Difficulties?
Traditionally these were often described as dyslexia, dyspraxia, add, and adhd . reading exercises can help to catch up lost ground.
http://www.ddat.co.uk/Comorbidity.aspx

Comorbidity of Learning Disorders
It is becoming increasing clear that the symptoms of learning difficulties ( reading difficulty, spelling difficulty, slow learner, poor concentration, poor writing, poor coordination, low confidence, low self esteem) may be linked to one single cause, cerebellum brain underfunctioning. Traditionally these were often described as dyslexia, dyspraxia, add, and adhd.
Research by DDAT show that dyslexic, dyspraxic, add and adhd symptoms are comorbid or occur together. The cerebellum brain has been shown to be underfunctioning in dyslexics which leads to poor skill development causing poor reading difficulty, poor spelling and slow learning. The cerebellum has also been shown to be affected in add and adhd where symptoms of poor concentration, poor attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity are the common symptoms. Dyspraxia is associated with common symptoms seen in those with cerebellum disorders with clumsiness, poor writing, poor memory, difficulty with running, catching and throwing. The disorders themselves lead to low self esteem and low confidence.
People taking medications for add and adhd can still stay on their medication whilst on the Dore programme but many will reduce their add and adhd medication or stop completely by the end. Most mild dyslexics seem to lose their dyslexia symptoms completely while more severe dyslexia symptoms will reduce to borderline levels. In research many will catch up with reading progress. Confidence will improve and self esteem improves at any age.
