There was little for him to do at the Hague, but in the absence of a minister at London, he transacted certain public business with the English foreign secretary. In 1796 Washington appointed him minister to Portugal, but prior to departing his father John Adams became president and changed his destination to Berlin (1797). While there, he negotiated (1799) a treaty of amity and commerce with Prussia. On Thomas Jefferson 's election to the presidency in 1800, the elder Adams recalled his son, who returned home in 1801. The next year, he was elected to the Massachusetts senate, and in 1803 was sent to Washington as a member of the Senate of the United States.

American Presidents Series - JOHN ADAMS
By John Patrick Diggins Perhaps no U.S. president was less suited for the practice of politics than John Adams. A gifted philosopher who helped lead the movement for American independence from its inception, Adams was unprepared for the realities of party politics that had already begun to dominate the new country before Washington left office. Visiting John Adams' Grave
Here I am in Quincy, Massachusetts on September 12, 1991. I spent one leisurely week of a two week vacation with my wife four months pregnant with our first child driving the eastern seaboard collecting dead president pictures. By mid-afternoon of September 12, we had reached Quincy, Massachusetts (the "C" in Quincy is pronounced as a "Z"), where John Adams and his son, John Quincy , rest. We reached the Adams National Historic Park at roughly 4 PM, lollygagged in the apple orchard for too long, then made our way to the guest house where we told the National Park Service guides there that we would like to both tour the house and see the Adams crypt. The crypt is in the basement of the Unitarian Church, about six or eight blocks from the Adams house, and we were told that the crypts are not open to the public, and only by special permission of the church could we even see the church itself. And we had missed the final house tour of the day. Our schedule was loose, so we could have waited until morning, but we had planned to drive out of the city that day. So.... Undaunted, I somehow convinced the guides, without actually saying so, that I was writing a book, and their earlier reticence to help changed immediately. A guide was "assigned" to us, and she not only telephoned the rector of the Unitarian church at his house and arranged for him to meet us at the church to show us to the crypts, but she gave us a personal tour of the house. The outbuilding which served as Adams' library was particularly impressive. This is not shown to the general public, so if you ever have occasion to visit the Adams site, make sure to ask if they will show you the library.

John Quincy Adams The first President who was the son of a President, John Quincy Adams in many respects paralleled the career as well as the temperament and viewpoints of his illustrious father. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1767, he watched the Battle of Bunker Hill from the top of Penn's Hill above the family farm. As secretary to his father in Europe, he became an accomplished linguist and assiduous diarist. After graduating from Harvard College, he became a lawyer. At age 26 he was appointed Minister to the Netherlands, then promoted to the Berlin Legation. In 1802 he was elected to the United States Senate. Six years later President Madison appointed him Minister to Russia. Serving under President Monroe, Adams was one of America's great Secretaries of State, arranging with England for the joint occupation of the Oregon country, obtaining from Spain the cession of the Floridas, and formulating with the President the Monroe Doctrine.

  • In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress. Politeness, delicacy, or decency... are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery, and cowardice. Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right... and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge, I mean the characters and conduct of their rulers.

Abigail Smith Adams Inheriting New England's strongest traditions, Abigail Smith was born in 1744 at Weymouth, Massachusetts. On her mother's side she was descended from the Quincys, a family of great prestige in the colony; her father and other forebearers were Congregational ministers, leaders in a society that held its clergy in high esteem. Like other women of the time, Abigail lacked formal education; but her curiosity spurred her keen intelligence, and she read avidly the books at hand. Reading created a bond between her and young John Adams, Harvard graduate launched on a career in law, and they were married in 1764. It was a marriage of the mind and of the heart, enduring for more than half a century, enriched by time.

The Education of John Quincy Adams
America's sixth president This issue of The Mandate examines the importance of the family in shaping the destiny of a nation. The article on pages 10-11 shows that God the Creator has given parents the great responsibility of overseeing the education and character development of their children. Christian character, which can never be adequately taught in a public school setting, is essential to sustain a free nation. Modern Americans have ceased, for the most part, to fulfill this obligation. They have turned away from the God who made America great and have produced a generation that is lazy, incapable of shouldering responsibility, dishonest, and forever blame-shifting. Many Chinese students observe these modern Americans and the enormous prosperity they have inherited and conclude that freedom and prosperity must have very little to do with personal character. But that is not true. We must look deeper to find the truth. The personal history of most early Americans reveals quite a distinct contrast in character to their modern counterparts. A close examination of historic accounts leads to one conclusion: America rose to greatness because of character - and she shall fall, if current trends prevail, for lack of it. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, is an excellent example of this character instilled in early Americans. Born in 1767, John Quincy came from a New England farm family that played a significant role in shaping the course of the United States.

  • Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.
All men profess honesty as long as they can. To believe all men honest would be folly. To believe none so is something worse.
Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.

ADAMS, John, these turbulent Gallits," our numbers would in another century exceed those of the British, and all Europe would be unable to subdue us. In sending him to College his family seem to have hoped that he would become a clergyman; but he soon found himself too much of a free thinker to feel at home in the pulpit of that day. When accused of Arminiamsm, he cheerfully admitted the charge. Later in life he was sometimes called a Unitarian, but of dogmatic Christianity he seems to have had as little as Franklin or Jefferson. "Where do we find," he asks, "a precept in the gospel requiring ecclesiastical synods, convocations, councils, decrees, creeds, confessions, oaths, subscriptions, and whole cartloads of other trumpery that we find religion encumbered with in these days." In this mood he turned from the ministry and began the study of law at Worcester. There was then a strong prejudice against lawyers in New England, but the profession throve lustily nevertheless, so litigious were the people. In 1758 Adams began the practice of his profession in Suffolk County, having his residence in Braintree.
