“John Quincy Adams was a precocious child. He attended private schools in America and abroad when he traveled with his diplomat-father. He graduated from Harvard, became a lawyer, and wrote about politics. He served as a diplomat in Europe for three US Presidents. Through his childhood associations he became a linguist and well informed on many subjects. He was a capable secretary of state under US President Monroe. In fact, Adams was responsible for many of Monroe’s foreign accomplishments. He held several elected offices, but his independent actions separated him from his party. He barely won the presidency. The House of Representatives elected him because he did not have a plurality. He lost his bid for a second term, but he became a representative in Congress where he argued strongly for what he believed, no matter how controversial. In fact, he had a stroke debating an issue and died two days later.” On Line Lesson Plans: John Quincy Adams from DiscoverySchool.com

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS U.S. President John Quincy Adams was the son of President John Adams , served as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was Secretary of State under President Monroe . In the presidential election of 1824, no one candidate received a majority of electoral votes and the election was decided in Adams' favor by Congress. The election of 1828 was the first in which the candidates were chosen by state legislatures instead of congressional caucuses, making the popular vote more of a factor. Adams lost by a wide margin to the Democrat from the south, Andrew Jackson . Although he served only one term as president, in 1830 Adams was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served for the remaining 17 years of his life.

Biography of U.S. President John Adams Part 5 Pros and Cons
About the United States President John Adams, biography and history of his presidency, positives and negatives.
PROFILES OF THE PRESIDENTS 2nd President JOHN ADAMS PRESIDENCY His 4 Years as President: PRO In order to head off the threat of war, Adams built up the armed forces of the U.S. to respectable proportions; he has justly been called the Father of the American Navy. In a series of naval skirmishes with France, only one of the new American ships was lost, while 85 French vessels were sunk or captured. This formidable military establishment (later dismantled by Jefferson) helped protect American independence and ensured peace during Adams's term. CON The military buildup under Adams went far beyond what was necessary, and the peopleespecially poor farmerspaid dearly for it in increased taxes. In both his military and financial programs, Adams was often unable to control his own cabinet, which was unduly influenced by his archenemy, Alexander Hamilton. PRO Adams showed remarkable courage and defied his own party in heading off a full-scale war with France. While much of the country clamored hysterically for war, Adams concluded a treaty of peace, and then showed skill and determination in forcing the restless country to accept it. Though this responsible statesmanship probably cost him reelection, Adams understood that keeping the peace was his most valuable contribution to his country. He once suggested that his epitaph should read: "Here lies John Adams, who took upon himself the responsibility of peace with France in the year 1800."

The Early Years
John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts to Abigail and John Adams. He witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill together with his mother at the age of 9. Adams spent much of his childhood in Europe, mostly in France while his father was serving as Minister. At the age of 15, the young John Quincy Adams served as Secretary to the Mission to Russia. On his return to the United States, Adams studied at Harvard. After his graduation, he studied law. President Washington appointed Adams Minister to the Netherlands in 1794, a position he held until 1797, when he became Minister to Prussia. In 1801, Adams returned to the United States and in 1802 was elected Massachusetts State Senator. In 1803, he was elected U.S. Senator. From 1809- 1814 Adams served as the first U.S. Minister of Russia. While there, he turned down an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1814 he became the head of the delegation charged with negotiating the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812. From 1815-1817, Adams served as Minister to Great Britain. From 1817-1825 he was Secretary of State in the Monroe administration. He was instrumental in improving relations with Great Britain. In addition, he was a strong supporter of the doctrine that became known as the Monroe Doctrine, which helped limit European involvement in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere.

John Quincy Adams won the presidency over Andrew Jackson - Courtesy of: National Archives and Records Administration ADAMS, John Quincy " dispersed all possible doubt of the independence of his country." In 1785, when his father was appointed minister to England, he decided not to stay with him in London, but to return at once to Massachusetts in order to complete his education at Harvard College. For an American career he believed an American education to be best fitted. Considering the immediate sacrifice of pleasure involved, it was a remarkably wise decision in a lad of eighteen. But Adams's character was already fully formed; he was what he remained throughout his life, a Puritan of the sternest and most uncompromising sort, who seemed to take a grim enjoyment in the performance of duty, especially when disagreeable. Returning home, he was graduated at Harvard College in 1788, and then studied law in the office of Theophilus Parsons, afterward chief justice of Massachusetts. In 1791 he was admitted to the Suffolk bar, and began the practice of law, the tedium of which he relieved by writing occasional articles for the papers. Under the signature of

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1767 - 1848) John Quincy Adams was born the son of John, who later became the second President of the United States, and Abigail Adams on July 11, 1767 in Braintree, Massachusetts. He was educated principally by his parents during his adolescence and later at private schools in Paris while accompanying his father on diplomatic missions in Europe. He also attended the University of Lieden while in Europe. He furthered his formal education at Harvard University on his return to the United States in 1785 graduating in 1787, then studied law under Theophilus Parsons in Newbury, Massachusetts. On completing his studies with Mr. Parsons he began to practice law in Boston in 1790. Adams had several articles published in the Boston newspapers defending President George Washington's policies. President Washington recognized the value of Adams as an ally and appointed him minister to the Netherlands from 1794 to 1797. In 1797 Adams was appointed as minister to Berlin where he remained until 1801. While on a mission to England Adams married Louisa Catherine Johnson, the daughter of the U.S. consul at London. After the election of Thomas Jefferson to the Presidency in 1801, President John Adams relieved his son from the Berlin ministerial position. John Quincy Adams returned to Boston and resumed his law practice. He sought a more active political role in U.S. affairs and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1803. He also served as a professor at Harvard University from 1806 - 1809. On the election of President Madison, Adams was appointed minister to Russia where he remained from 1809 - 1814. Adams was called to peace negotiations during the war of 1812 and was subsequently assigned to serve as U.S. minister to England. He was recalled to the U.S. by President James Madison to become Secretary of State.

President John Quincy Adams
American History Study Guide John Quincy Adams A member of the influential Adams family, a family that contributed greatly to the early years of the United States, John Quincy Adams was the first son of a former chief executive to also be elected president. Like his father, John Adams (1735-1826; see entry in volume 1), the second U.S. president, John Quincy Adams served only one term and was not a popular or an effective president. He won a disputed election. No candidate in the 1824 presidential election received enough electoral votes, so the election was decided by the House of Representatives, as required by the U.S. Constitution. Because of the election controversy, nearly every piece of legislation Adams or his allies in the Democratic-Republican Party attempted to pass was blocked by political rivals. Indeed, shortly after Adams's election, military war hero
