Little-Known U.S. Document Signed by President Adams Proclaims America's Government Is Secular by Jim Walker Some people today assert that the United States government came from Christian foundations. They argue that our political system represents a Christian ideal form of government and that Jefferson, Madison, et al, had simply expressed Christian values while framing the Constitution. If this proved true, then we should have a wealth of evidence to support it, yet just the opposite proves the case. Although, indeed, many of America's colonial statesmen practiced Christianity, our most influential Founding Fathers broke away from traditional religious thinking. The ideas of the Great Enlightenment that began in Europe had begun to sever the chains of monarchical theocracy. These heretical European ideas spread throughout early America. Instead of relying on faith, people began to use reason and science as their guide. The humanistic philosophical writers of the Enlightenment, such as Locke, Rousseau, and Voltaire, had greatly influenced our Founding Fathers and Isaac Newton's mechanical and mathematical foundations served as a grounding post for their scientific reasoning. A few Christian fundamentalists attempt to convince us to return to the Christianity of early America, yet according to the historian, Robert T. Handy, "No more than 10 percent probably less of Americans in 1800 were members of congregations."

Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

Adams, John
, vice president under George Washington and second president of the United States . Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard, Adams taught school before becoming a leading Boston lawyer. Although he actively opposed the Stamp Act as a violation of the unwritten British constitution, he demonstrated his sense of justice and his belief in due process by defending the British soldiers on trial for shooting citizens in the Boston Massacre . A delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses , Adams was one of five men selected to prepare the Declaration of Independence , which he signed. From 1778 to 1788 Adams performed diplomatic missions in France, the Netherlands, and England. He helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris , marking British recognition of American independence, and served as the first U.S. minister to Great Britain . Adams was a profound political thinker, who made major contributions to the theory and practice of constitutional government. He drafted the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780, which became a model for later state constitutions and the U.S. Constitution In 1789 Adams became the first vice president of the United States, later describing the post as "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived." As political parties began to form during his terms as vice president, Adams sided with the Federalists, becoming in 1796 the only president who was a member of the

ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY
, sixth president of the United States, diplomat, congressman, U.S. senator, and secretary of state. As the eldest and most gifted son of John Adams, second president of the United States, Adams enjoyed many opportunities that prepared him for later public service. In 1802 Adams was elected a U.S. senator from Massachusetts as a Federalist, but he was too independent of mind to follow a regular party line. During the international tensions that arose from the Napoleonic Wars, he supported the policies of the Jefferson administration. His stand, contrary to the position of his party, resulted in his replacement as senator. He resigned, however, before the end of his term, only to be appointed to a series of important diplomatic posts. He was one of the American commissioners who arranged for the Treaty of Ghent that ended the War of 1812. As secretary of state, he drafted the Monroe Doctrine and acquired Florida from Spain for the United States. He was the New England candidate for the presidency in 1824, but neither he nor any of the other candidates commanded the electoral majority the Constitution required. Therefore the election was decided by the House of Representatives, each state casting one vote. Henry Clay threw his support to Adams, who was then elected over Andrew Jackson. When Adams made Clay his secretary of state, the disapproving Jacksonians accused the president of entering into "a corrupt bargain" with Clay. From then until the end of his administration, Adams was the target of highly charged partisan abuse.

  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

John Adams
US President - 1797-1801 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Learned and thoughtful, John Adams was more remarkable as a political philosopher than as a politician. "People and nations are forged in the fires of adversity," he said, doubtless thinking of his own as well as the American experience. Adams was born in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1735. A Harvard-educated lawyer, he early became identified with the patriot cause; a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses, he led in the movement for independence. During the Revolutionary War he served in France and Holland in diplomatic roles, and helped negotiate the treaty of peace. From 1785 to 1788 he was minister to the Court of St. James's, returning to be elected Vice President under George Washington.

John Quincy Adams
US President - 1825-29 Courtesy of the Library of Congress The first President who was the son of a President, John Quincy Adams in many respects paralleled the career as well as the temperament and viewpoints of his illustrious father. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1767, he watched the Battle of Bunker Hill from the top of Penn's Hill above the family farm. As secretary to his father in Europe, he became an accomplished linguist and assiduous diarist. After graduating from Harvard College, he became a lawyer. At age 26 he was appointed Minister to the Netherlands, then promoted to the Berlin Legation. In 1802 he was elected to the United States Senate. Six years later President Madison appointed him Minister to Russia. Serving under President Monroe, Adams was one of America's great Secretaries of State, arranging with England for the joint occupation of the Oregon country, obtaining from Spain the cession of the Floridas, and formulating with the President the Monroe Doctrine.

John Adams, 1st Vice President (1789-1797) It is not for me to interrupt your deliberations by any general observations on the state of the nation, or by recommending, or proposing any particular measures.
On April 21, 1789, John Adams, the first vice president of the United States, began his duties as president of the Senate. Adams' role in the administration of George Washington was sharply constrained by the constitutional limits on the vice-presidency and his own reluctance to encroach upon executive prerogative. He enjoyed a cordial but distant relationship with President Washington, who sought his advice on occasion but relied primarily on the cabinet. Adams played a more active role in the Senate, however, particularly during his first term. A Family Tradition of Public Service A Lawyer and a Legislator As a member of the town meeting, Adams drafted instructions for the Braintree delegate to the Massachusetts provincial assembly, known as the General Court, which met in October 1765 to formulate the colony's response to the Stamp Act. Adams' rationale, that the colonies could not be taxed by a parliament in which they were not represented, and that the stamp tax was "inconsistent with the spirit of the common law and of the essential fundamental principles of the British constitution," soon appeared in the Massachusetts Gazette and Boston News Letter. His cousin, Samuel Adams, incorporated John's argument in the instructions that he drafted for the Boston delegates, and other towns adopted the same stance.

John Adams
Adams was one of the leaders in the fight for American Independence. His most notable accomplishsment, as President, was to avoid a war with France, while maintaining American honor. A believer in centralized government, he helped strengthen the Federal govenment. Elected:
The Early Years
Adams was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts. He had a playful childhood, putting only minor effort into his early schoolwork. But Adams went on to attend Harvard, where he became a lawyer. Adams was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1758. He steadily built his law practice, and his most celebrated case was his successful defense of the British soldiers accused of carrying out the Boston Massacre. Of the eight accused of murder, six were acquitted and two were convicted only of manslaughter. In 1770, Adams was elected to the General Court (Lower House) of the Massachusetts legislature. Three years later, he was elected to the Governor's Council (Upper House), but his election was vetoed by the Royal Governor, most likely due to Adams' support for the Boston Tea Party. Adams served from 1774 to 1777 as a member of the Continental Congress. It was he who nominated Washington to be commander of the armed forces. From 1778 to 1788, Adams served abroad as a diplomat. In France, with Benjamin Franklin, then in the Netherlands, where he succeeded in gaining Dutch recognition, and loans, for the United States, he earned a reputation as a skillful negotiator and spokesman for his fledgling country. In 1882, he returned to France to help negotiate the Treaty of Paris which ended the Revolutionary War. From 1785 until 1788 he served as the first United States Ambassador to Great Britain.
