Ada Last modified: Thursday, September 25, 2003 A high-level programming language developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s for the United States Defense Department. Ada was designed to be a general-purpose language for everything from business applications to rocket guidance systems . One of its principal features is that it supports real-time applications. In addition, Ada incorporates modular techniques that make it easier to build and maintain large systems. Since 1986, Ada has been the mandatory development language for most U.S. military applications. In addition, Ada is often the language of choice for large systems that require real-time processing, such as banking and air traffic control systems. Ada is named after Augusta Ada Byron (1815-52), daughter of Lord Byron, and Countess of Lovelace. She helped Charles Babbage develop

Ada was originally targeted at embedded and real-time systems, and is still commonly used for those purposes. The Ada 95 revision (designed by Tucker Taft of Intermetrics between and ) improved support for systems, numerical, and financial programming. Notable features of Ada include strong typing run-time checking parallel processing exception handling , and generics . Ada 95 added support for object-oriented programming , including dynamic dispatch Ada implementations do not typically use garbage collection for storage management as it is only an optional feature of the language. Ada supports a limited form of

Ada
The Ada programming language was adopted as a standard by ANSI in 1983, and by ISO in 1987. Its principal concerns were:
  • data abstraction
  • readability and maintainability
  • programming in the large
  • reliability and safety through strong compile-time and run-time checks
  • multitasking and real-time programming
Ada 95 is a revision to the standard. The major changes are:
  • full support for object-oriented programming
  • ease of mixed-language programming
  • an extensive standard library, including mathematical, string-manipulation, and command-line-interface packages
  • improved support for real-time programming
The GNU/NYU Ada Translator (GNAT), an integral part of the Free Software Foundation's gcc system, is a free Ada-95 compiler available on a wide variety of platforms. Click here to go to the GNAT FTP directory at NYU. There are also compilers that translate Ada 95 into Java bytecodes , allowing Java applets to be written in Ada. Ada is a high-level computer language, named for Ada Lovelace (1815-52), written for the U.S. Department of Defense in the 70s to take the place of COBOL. Congress passed a law in 1991 for all military software to be written in Ada. Ada contains coding features found in low-level assembly languages able to be machine-processed in "real time." Ada joins human readability and processing efficiency, helping to reach the computer language goals, which are often in conflict. Widely used in the aerospace industry and gaining ground in the artificial intelligence community, Ada is the new military computer language standard. The links below offer information about Ada. This interface lets you use BSD sockets from Ada (TCP, UDP and multicast). You can download the stable version (1.8.4.7) under a modified GPL licence similar to the one held by GNAT.
