Talk Pages
If you dislike the idea of a Contributors page we can leave the page behind when doing the rename. Which would then be true for Programming:Ada:Contributing as well. Or how about Talk:Ada Programming/Contributors lounge and Talk:Ada Programming/Contributing insteed.
You're right, Programming:Ada:Contributing will be counted as a content page while being internal, but at least it is not a talk page. I think we should designate a talk page as the main page for discussing about the wikibook, either Talk:Programming:Ada (future Talk:Ada Programming) or Talk:Programming:Ada:Contributing (future Talk:Ada Programming/Contributing) and open the major discussions always on that page.

The Ada programming language is designed for embedded systems, safety-critical software, and large projects that require portability and maintainability. For example, over 99 percent of the aviation software in the Boeing 777 is in Ada. Not surprisingly, Ada was the first object-oriented design programming language to be accepted as an International Standard. The language is named after Ada Byron , Countess of Lovelace, who was the first published computer programmer and daughter of the poet Lord Byron. The Ada Information Clearinghouse has served a community of software engineers, managers, and programmers for over fifteen years. The Web site provides articles on Ada applications, databases of available compilers, current job offerings, and more. The AdaIC is managed by the Ada Resource Association (ARA), a group of software tool vendors that supports the use of Ada for excellence in software engineering. Ada has kept its promise made over twenty years ago to save lifecycle costs from planning software to updating legacy systems. Easily reused and maintained, readable and user friendly, Ada code facilitates such massive software projects as the Space Station and the Paris Metro. It has proven to be extraordinarily robust in decades' worth of daily field tests under the most rigorous conditions in which millions of lives have been at stake. The language dominates air transport and subways and runs everything from video security systems to pollution monitoring devices.

The Ada Programming Language
What is Ada
Ada is a language originally designed to reduce the cost of writing embedded systems for USA Department of Defense projects. The 1983 version of the language ( ): incorporated much of the accepted wisdom on software engineering of the time:
  • Data Structures - Pascal/C like but safer:
  • Arrays have bounds before use and bounds are available and checked
  • Pointers are under control
  • Unions are tagged
  • Type conversions are explicit
  • Can be encapsulated by an abstract description
  • Modularization
  • Separate compilation
  • Inter-module type checking
  • Information hiding/encapsulation/abstraction
  • Cooperative parallel processes(tasks),
  • Exceptions,
  • Generics/templates replacing Macros
  • Least error prone syntax(based on experimental data) The name was protected so that a company could only call their product "Ada" if it passed a large set of tests. In this version there was hardly any support for inheritance, mathematical and scientific programming, commercial programming, System programming. However it did contain some unique features for real time work including: tasking, exceptions, delays,... It has been criticised for being
  • Too Complex to be safe(Hoare)
  • Too Verbose (Any C programmer)
  • Not Object Oriented (Any C++/Smalltalk programmer)
  • Mandated (Most conservatives and/or democrats) The new standard was released in Spring 1995 (

We'll award a prize of 400 Euro to the entry we judge to be the best. I don't like to put this type of adverts here, but I decide to do it this time. Why? First, because I am an Ada fan. Second, and more important, Ada has ASIS Ada Semantic Interface Specification ) which provides a standard API for analyzing Ada programs. It'd be great if at least some of the contest entries would be programming tools built around ASIS. With a bit of XML and GtkAda , people can build visualisation tools, static debugers etc. I am sure you can come up with many more good ideas...

    Technology
Ada A high-level programming language developed by the U.S. Department of Defense along with the European Economic Community and many other organizations. It was designed for embedded applications and process control but is also used for logistics applications. Ada is a Pascal-based language that is very comprehensive. Ada was named after Augusta Ada Byron (1815-1852), Countess of Lovelace and daughter of the poet Lord Byron and mathematician Annabella Milbanke Byron. Ada also became a mathematician and was the colleague of Charles Babbage, who was developing his Analytical Engine. Some of her programming notes for the machine have survived, giving her the distinction of being the first documented programmer in the world. What Is Ada
Ada is a modern programming language designed for large, long-lived applications - and embedded systems in particular - where reliability and efficiency are essential. It was originally developed in the early 1980s (this version is generally known as Ada 83) and then revised and enhanced in an upward compatible fashion in the mid 1990s. The resulting language, Ada 95, was the first internationally standardized (ISO) Object-Oriented Language. Under the auspices of ISO, the language is currently undergoing another (minor) revision, scheduled for completion in the form of an amendment to the standard in 2005. The name "Ada" is not an acronym; it was chosen in honor of Augusta Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), a mathematician who is sometimes regarded as the world's first programmer because of her work with Charles Babbage. She was also the daughter of the poet Lord Byron. Ada 95 is seeing significant usage worldwide in the high-integrity and safety-critical domains including commercial and military aircraft avionics, air traffic control, railroad systems, and medical devices. With its embodiment of modern software engineering principles Ada is an excellent teaching language for both introductory and advanced computer science courses, and it has been the subject of significant university research especially in the area of real-time technologies. AdaCore has a long and intimate history with the Ada programming language. Company members worked on the original Ada 83 design and review, played key roles in the Ada 95 project, and continue to be deeply involved with the Ada 05 revision process. The initial GNAT compiler was essential to the growth of Ada 95; the company delivered it at the time of the language's standardization, thus guaranteeing that users would have a quality implementation for transitioning to Ada 95 from Ada 83 or other languages.

Grady Booch and Doug Bryan combine their expertise to explain how to create large-scale Ada systems using good software engineering principles. Five large-scale Ada programming examples build upon these principles using an object-oriented methodology while illuminating topics such as database systems and generic tree packages. The Third Edition also incorporates more small-sized code examples, exercises based on the programming applications, a new chapter on Ada's impact on the software crisis, and an appendix on Ada 9X.
