How to find a practitioner
Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used for more than 2,000 years in China. In the past 30 years it has become more popular in this country, and there are now over 1,500 British doctors who use acupuncture as part of their medical practice.
What sort of problems can acupuncture be used for?
Acupuncture has been used to treat many medical problems, but is particularly useful for pain. It can help with joint pains, muscular pains, migraine, and even period pains. It has also been used to treat problems such as sinusitis, hay fever, irritable bowel, and nausea.
Will acupuncture treatment help me?
Three quarters of all people will get some benefit from acupuncture treatment. They may lose their pain completely, or they may find it is much improved. Unfortunately, about a quarter of patients do not seem to respond to acupuncture, and we can never guarantee results

Researchers found five weeks of acupuncture treatment reduced the number of structural abnormalities in sperm and increased the overall number of normal sperm in a group of men with infertility problems. They say the results suggest that acupuncture may complement traditional infertility treatments and help men reach their full reproductive potential. Acupuncture in Seattle
Oriental medicine is based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of Western medicine. The ancient Chinese recognized the vital energy, which they called Qi in all life forms and life processes. In developing an understanding of the prevention and cure of disease, the ancient physicians discovered a system of Qi circulation throughout the human body, along specific pathways. Each pathway (meridian) is associated with a particular physiological system of an internal organ. Disease is considered the result of imbalances of Qi within the body, impairing the optimal functioning of these organ systems.

Acupuncture may relieve tension headaches
Traditional Chinese treatment reduces rate of headaches, study finds
LONDON - Acupuncture is an effective treatment for patients suffering from tension headaches, German researchers said on Friday. The ancient Chinese therapy that involves inserting very fine needles into the skin at specific sites on the body cut the rates of headaches by nearly half in a study of 270 people. "A significant proportion of patients with tension-type headaches benefited from acupuncture," said Dr. Wolfgang Weidenhammer, of the Center for Complementary Medicine Research at Technische Universitat in Munich. "Acupuncture was well tolerated and improvements lasted several months after completion of treatment," he added. Weidenhammer and his team compared traditional Chinese acupuncture, minimal acupuncture in which the needles are inserted superficially in the skin, and no treatment. The headaches rate in patients given the traditional treatment over eight weeks dropped by almost half. They experience 7 fewer days of headaches in the four weeks following treatment.

Why This Course?
  • Scientific focus and emphasis Physiologic and anatomic explanations of acupuncture Current research and basic science information presented Evidence-based Clinical and factual orientation Encourages critical thinking, questioning, and evaluation of presented material
This course gives full dignity to the medical tradition found in classical Chinese texts on acupuncture, which presents acupuncture as a physiologically-based medical system. Based on the recently published Dao of Chinese Medicine by Donald E. Kendall, OMD, PhD (Oxford University Press, 2002) and the writings of other Chinese medical historians such as Paul U. Unschuld, we know that in ancient China, physicians had already recognized that acupuncture worked through influencing the circulation of blood and "vital air" (Qi) throughout the vascular system. The ancient Chinese acupuncturists had also described the relay of afferent and efferent nerve impulses and the anatomy of the internal organs, brain, spinal cord, and muscles of the body, and related the effects of acupuncture to anatomical structures and physiologic principles. Chinese medical theory was, in fact, based on anatomy and physiologynot on invisible energy circulating through invisible meridians.

INTRODUCTION Acupuncture is a major part of Oriental Medicine, a system of health care based on the principal of balancing energy flow in the body to correct physiological function. In itself, acupuncture is used to address physical, psychological and emotional problems. Often, it is practiced along with Asian herbal medicine and massage. Acupuncture originated in China (see our Traditional Chinese Medicine Resource Guide) more than 2,500 years and spread first throughout Asia, and later to Europe and the Americas. While it has been offered in the Asian communities throughout the United States for many generations, it is only since 1970, following the opening of China to the West, that this system of health care has been available to the general population in this country. The basic mechanism of acupuncture has recently been described as operating similar to a secondary neurological system or "information system" in the body, with the act of stimulating an acupuncture point seen as communicating information vital to basic physical functions. The central concept is that if the circulation of information is disrupted, optimum function is affected and this results in pain or illness. While this theory is in its infancy, several lines of inquiry seem to support this concept. In addition to this basic conceptual work, there are projects investigating the clinical effects of treatment as well as several types of basic research. In a later section of this guide, the clinical research information is described. The basic research work has shown acupuncture’s effect on ACTH, insulin, thyroid hormones, growth stimulating hormone, beta-endorphin, white blood cell production and plasma cholesterol levels.

What is it?
Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting fine needles at selected points on the skin to balance the body's energy (chi), thereby treating and preventing disease. It's used to treat a wide range of common ailments, relieve pain and promote general health.
History and theory
Acupuncture has been used in China for more than 3,000 years and for many centuries in Japan and Korea. Missionaries and doctors brought the treatment to Europe in the 17th century. It has grown in popularity since the 1970s and is now widely taught and practised in the West. There are many acupoints along each meridian. Inserting needles at these points is said to help regulate the function of the related organ by helping the flow of energy. There are more than 300 acupoints on the body.
