What is Acupressure?
Acupressure is an ancient healing art
developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force energy to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses gentle but firm pressure.
Energy Work: The most potent form of energy work uses acupressure points. Energy (know as Chi or Qi) flows most freely when you touch, press, or hold the points in bodywork. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) these healing points are the gateways to the body's life energy force. This universal energy source is also the basis of the Martial Arts and Healing Arts. The flow of this vital healing energy governs blood circulation and the function and balance of the human body. Studying the location and how to touch these acupuncture points is key to transformational energy work and massage therapy.

Receiving Acupressure

An acupressure session is carried out in a relaxed environment and does not require removing your clothes. A typical session includes an initial 5-10 minute chat when your therapist will assess you using techniques from traditional oriental medicine. This includes pulse, tongue, face and five element diagnosis. Different styles of acupressure will then be combined using points all over the body. At the end of the session your therapist may give you some acupressure self-help techniques or advice on five element food balancing.
Five Element Food Balancing
Through assessment during the acupressure session the practioner will be able to assess imbalances in the body. This can then be applied to the ancient Chinese technique of five element food balancing which will identify which foods to increase or decrease in your diet to achieve balance and maintain health.

Acupressure
Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing method that involves applying pressure to certain meridian points on the body to relieve pain. The human body has fourteen "meridians" that carry energy throughout the body. These meridians start at the fingertips, connect to the brain, and then connect to the organ associated with the specific meridian. Acupressure deals with all the aspects of a person as a whole: body, emotions, mind, and spirit as one, not as separate parts. It relaxes muscular tension and balances the vital life forces of the body.
Acupressure can help with the following: 1. Relieve stress and tension
2. Relax mind and body
3. Increase blood circulation
4. Aid in the removal of toxic wastes
5. Provide relief from head, neck and shoulder aches
6. Promote the healing of injuries
7. Increase energy levels
8. Increase overall feeling of well-being
9. Decreasing labor pains
The client lies fully clothed on a soft massage table while the practitioner presses gently on points situated on various parts of the client's body. The session is non-invasive and gentle. An average session lasts for about one hour. However, most clients normally require a number of sessions to complete a treatment. According to traditional Chinese medicine, life is the flow of vital energy through the body in a continuous circuit. 14 Channels, namely Meridians, comprise the circuit in a human body. Often called "acupuncture without needles" acupressure seeks to remedy illness through the application of deep finger pressure at points located along an invisible system of energy channels called meridians. What Is It? Acupressure is a type of bodywork that involves pressing specific points on the body with the fingers, knuckles, and palms (and sometimes the elbows and feet) to relieve pain, reduce stress, and promote general good health. Developed in China some 5,000 years ago, perhaps out of the natural human instinct to hold or rub a place on the body that hurts, acupressure is part of the holistic system of traditional chinese medicine (TCM) that also includes acupuncture. (Interestingly, the use of acupressure predates acupuncture by some 2,500 years.) In the United States acupressure is primarily used to relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. In China, the technique is used more like first-aid: The Chinese typically practice it on themselves or on family members to treat everyday ailments such as colds, headaches, sore muscles, and hangovers. Specialists are consulted for more complicated problems. While many people prefer to go to a trained therapist to get acupressure treatments, the techniques, once learned, can be performed on oneself or by a friend.

Acupressure Eases Post-Surgical Nausea
What the Study Showed

How It Was Done

Why It's Important

What the Study Showed An Austrian study of a little-known Korean acupressure technique has shown that it can significantly relieve nausea and vomiting after minor surgery. Researchers at the University of Innsbruck performed the randomized, placebo-controlled study. The results, published in 2002 in Anesthesia Analgesia, indicate that stimulation of the Korean hand acupuncture point K-K9 is an excellent method for reducing postoperative nausea. How It Was Done The study involved 80 women, ranging in age from 18 to 60. All were scheduled for minor (gynecological) laparoscopic surgery. The women were randomly assigned to two groups. One received acupressure on the K-K9 point, which corresponds to the Chinese acupuncture point P6. (This Chinese point has been shown in numerous studies to have an anti-nausea effect.) The comparison group received acupressure on points that are not defined in Korean hand acupuncture. In both groups the pressure was applied using 2-mm acupressure "seeds," small beads fastened to the points with adhesive tape one hour before the procedure, and left in place for 24 hours. Typically, acupressure discs called AB-Bongs are used in Korean hand acupressure. The seeds were substituted in this study because they produce a more powerful stimulus, which has been proved necessary to prevent nausea in a previous study of the Chinese acupuncture point.
