ACID RAIN
The Acid Rain WebQuest was featured in the March, 2001 episode of NetFiles
View the episode by clicking HERE Introduction Why are the trees dying? How come there are no fish in the lake? Why does the paint on my Dad's car look so bad? Where does that terrible rotten egg smell come from in our school yard every Spring? The answer to these questions is simple; acid rain is responsible for many of the serious environmental problems facing us today. While the answer may be simple, solving the acid rain problem is not. The Task A local citizens' group has hired you, and a group of other researchers, to investigate acid rain. You will take on the role of either a Chemist, Ecologist, Health Scientist, or Economist and examine the issue from that perspective. Working within this team, you will create a web site detailing the problems caused by acid rain and recommending ways that these problems can be alleviated. Within your group, decide who is going to assume the following roles. Use the questions appearing under each role to assist you in your research. While you are responsible for completing your section of the report, you will also be responsible for drawing up a series of recommendations, along with the other members of your team, on how to combat this serious issue. Allowance Trading Basics
Market-based mechanisms for reducing pollution include a variety of economic or market-oriented incentives and disincentives, such as tax credits, emissions fees, or tradeable emissions limitations (emissions trading for short). There are many types of emissions trading approaches; the one used by EPA's Clean Air Market Programs is called "allowance trading" or "cap and trade" and has the following key features:
  • An emissions "cap" : a limit on the total amount of pollution that can be emitted (released) from all regulated sources (e.g., power plants); the cap is set lower than historical emissions to cause reductions in emissions Allowances : an allowance is an authorization to emit a fixed amount of a pollutant Measurement : accurate tracking of all emissions Flexibility : sources can choose how to reduce emissions, including whether to buy additional allowances from other sources that reduce emissions

ACID RAIN Hi, our group has been studying what acid rain is and its effects on nature, on human made materials, and the health of people. In these next paragraphs, we will be telling you how acid rain affects different things. Acid rain is rain more acidic then normal. This problem is very complicated. The reason for acid rain is very simple, but it is really hard to solve it completely. The huge reason is because of sulfur dioxide that rises into the atmosphere and creates acidic rain. PH of normal rain is around 5.6, 5.7. If you' re wondering what PH is, it is a measurement of how acidic or alkaline a substance is. If a substance is 7, it is neutral; nether acidic or base, or alkaline. The smoke fumes from burning fossil fuels rise up into the atmosphere and mix with the moisture and weather systems. The main chemicals for acid rain are sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. At a Ph6- crustaceans, insects and some plankton species begin to disappear.

    Effects on Soil
It was argued by early acid rain researchers that forests in Canada and northeastern U.S.A. are on acidic soils and therefore acid rain makes no difference to the forests. However, we now know this is not true. The effects of acid rain on soil is dependent on the behaviour of ions in the soil. Most of the ions of interest are cations such as Ca and Mg in addition to the cation H . These ions are the nutrients needed by plants. There are also toxic ions such as aluminum, lead, mercury, cadium and other metal ions. These ions are usually not free to migrate in the soil because they are bound to the negatively charged surface of immobile soil particles. These particles are negative because of the silicates on the surface of clays and the organic acids on particles of organic matter. The cation-exchange capacity is the ability of the soil to bind to the positively charged ions but acid rain depletes this capacity. Acid rain is able to mobilize these ions from the soil in two ways:
  • The H+ ion in the acidic water displaces the other positive ions from their binding sites and increases the concentration of these ions in the soil water. When the soil particles are no longer able to bind anymore H+ ions, the concentration of H+ also increases in the soil water.

What is the pH of rain in your area? Students take pH measurements for rain in their neighborhood and compare it with other students' findings. This activity is best when conducted over several weeks during a rainy time of year. Materials pH test strips 1 plastic 1-oz. cup for each student What To Do DISTRIBUTE one cup and five test strips per student. Students take cups home. Each time it rains, students COLLECT rain water in their cups. They TEST the water with one strip of pH paper, and bring the pH paper to class.
DRAW a map of the neighborhood on a wall chart. Students PIN their paper on the map in the location where they collected the rain water. On successive rainy days, student PIN additional papers to the right of previous ones.
As a class, DISCUSS the pH of water in the neighborhood. Did the pH change over time? Was the pH different in different areas? What are some possible reasons for this? What's Happening?

Acid Rain: Do you need to start wearing a rainhat?
Depending on where you live, maybe you've heard of acid rain. Now, acid rain is not pure acid falling from the sky, but rather it is rainfall or atmospheric moisture that has been mixed with elements and gases that have caused the moisture to become more acidic than normal. Pure water has a pH of 7, and, generally, rainfall is somewhat on the acidic side. But, acid rain can have a pH of about 5.0-5.5, and can even be in the 4 range in the northeastern United States, where there are a lot of industries and cars.
    Causes of acid rain
" Acid rain is caused by human activity" Acid rain is a uniquely human-related phenomenon. The burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) by power-production companies and industries releases sulfur into the air that combines with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide (SO ). Exhausts from cars cause the formation of nitrogen oxides in the air. From these gases, airborne sulfuric acid (H SO ) and nitric acid (HNO ) can be formed and be dissolved in the water vapor in the air. Although acid-rain gases may originate in urban areas, it is often carried for hundreds of miles in the atmosphere by winds into rural areas. That is why forests and lakes in the countryside can be harmed by acid rain that originates in cities.

Signs of recovery from acid rain damage
    October 18, 1999
Web posted at: 12:27 p.m. EDT (1627 GMT) Lakes and streams in North America and Europe are beginning to recover from the damage inflicted by acid rain, scientists report. The recovery is being attributed to the passage and enforcement of environmental regulations and international agreements that reduce the emissions that produce acid rain. Emissions from burning fossil fuels steadily increased from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century until the 1970s. The sulfur and nitrates released into the atmosphere eventually return to the Earth as acid rain. This study provides the first conclusive evidence that international and regional agreements designed to reduce the emissions that cause acid rain, beginning with the United Nations' First Sulphur Protocol in 1985, are working. Sulfur dioxide concentrations in north/central Europe air decreased by 63 percent between 1985 and 1996, according to the report. Sulfur dioxide is converted in the atmosphere to sulfuric acid, the main ingredient that produces acid rain. The United States and Canada experienced a 28 percent decline in the same emissions between 1980 and 1995. In Great Britain, emissions of sulfur also decreased by 32 percent between 1979 and 1993.

Acid rain works fast, study finds
Acid rain forms when emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide primarily from electric utility plants and automobile emissions react with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to produce acidic compounds

Web posted at: 2:00 PM EST
Acid rain dissolves forest nutrients much faster than previously believed, posing a threat to future forest productivity, according to a study conducted by researchers from three universities in the southeastern United States. The study shows that acid rain accelerated the nutrient-robbing acidification of forest soils by 38 percent at the Calhoun Experimental Forest in South Carolina, where soil data was collected over the past 30 years. "We found a dramatic increase in acidity and a steady depletion of nutrients over this 30-year period," said Daniel Markewitz, a soil scientist in the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forest Resources.

acid rain from power plants in the midwest United States has also harmed the forests One reaction leading to the production of acid rain is as follows
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_rain
    Acid rain
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Acid rain is defined as rain with a pH of below 5.6. Normal rain has a pH of slightly under 6, which is slightly acidic . This natural acidity is caused by dissolved carbon dioxide dissociating to form weak carbonic acid . 'Acid rain' is caused by sulfur from impurities in fossil fuels , and nitrogen from the air combining with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide . These diffuse into the atmosphere and react with water to form sulfuric and nitric acids which are soluble and fall with the rain. Some hydrochloric acid is also formed. The resulting increased acidity in soil and waterways has proven to be harmful to fish and vegetation. Efforts to combat this phenomenon are ongoing.
