Accounting For Style
How an understanding of individual learning styles can pay dividends in class
By Paul Meehan has concluded. Additional learner characteristics to factor in are the differences between left and right brain-dominated students and distinctions between field-dependent and field-independent learners . Those who are right brain-dominated tend to: be intuitive and subjective, process information in a holistic way, enjoy dealing with uncertain or elusive information, rely on drawing and manipulating to help them think and learn. Conversely, left brain-dominance means an intellectual predisposition, a preference for established, certain information and a tendency to: be objective, to make sense of learning through discussion and written records. Notes: 1. This is a branch of psychology developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder that has provided the foundations for our understanding of learning styles and the stimulus worldwide for enhanced classroom practices (at all stages of the education process). NLP differs from traditional clinical psychology (which is primarily concerned with describing difficulties, categorizing them and searching for historical causes) in that it focuses on how our thoughts, actions and feelings work together , in the here and now, to produce our experience. It originates from the modern sciences of biology, linguistics and information and has incorporated new principles in terms of how the mind/brain works. In practical terms, its concerned with the creation of pragmatic models of human excellence.

TEACHING INNOVATION: THE IMPACT OF
TECHNOLOGY AND COOPERATIVE LEARNING Karen D. Squires, University of Tampa Introduction
Many college faculty members are frustrated with today’s students whom they perceive are under motivated and ill prepared to perform in expected ways in a collegiate environment (Sacks, 1996). Faculty are challenged to deal with shortened attention spans and visual/video orientations. Presenting lectures to students using Power Point may help specifically address the visual learning style of the GenXers. Power Point has other advantages of helping instructors to be highly organized, distribution of lecture outlines helps students to focus on lecture content rather than struggling to copy the material, while assuring that all relevant information makes it into the student notes (Simindinger, 1998). Brightman’s (1997) studies have shown that material presented in this fashion more closely fits Briggs-Myers personality profiles of the majority of undergraduates and therefore facilitates their mastery of the material. Methodology Principles of accounting is traditionally taught in a lecture format with the professor presenting concepts, definitions and working problems in front of class. The students record this information in their notes. Homework is assigned, but generally not collected or graded. On average, one chapter per week is covered by three hours of lecture. Exams are given upon completion of three or four chapters. Three sections of the second accounting course, Principles of Managerial Accounting were taught following the traditional format, with an exam every three chapters. For the exams, students were allowed to bring in a "cheat sheet" with any notes they wished on one side of a sheet of typing paper (this is an institutional abnormality that is not generally observed in most institutions).

THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE NATURE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACCOUNTING AND DESCRIBES HOW COMPANIES ARE RESPONDING TO PRESSURES TO KEEP ACCOUNTING RECORDS OF THE IMPACT THAT THEIR PRODUCTIVE PROCESSES HAVE ON THE ENVIRONMENT INTRODUCTION The period 1971 - 1980 heralded the beginning of environmental accounting in the guise of 'social responsibility accounting'. Social responsibility accounting sought to establish the degree of responsibility that companies should have towards stakeholders other than the firm's shareholders. Part of this responsibility concerned the interaction between the firm and the ecological environment. This reflected a preoccupation with the environment evident among academics at that time. For example, in 1972 The Club of Rome Report offered a doomsday scenario where unrestrained economic growth had placed natural resources under severe pressure (Meadows et al, 1972). In particular oil, the lifeblood of Western capitalism, was predicted to run out by the end of the century.

Accounting as a discipline
The department consists of two disciplines, Accounting and Finance, making it one of the largest and most popular departments within the school. Annually 150 students are admitted to major in accounting or finance. The quota for finance was separated few years ago and has increased to 60 students. In addition, 150 students prefer to study accounting or finance as a minor. Accounting as a study and research area consists of two fields: financial accounting and management accounting. In the curriculum they are represented as follows:

Paul Beck, Director Background Information The Office of Accounting Research (OAR) was established in 1983 as the research arm of the Department of Accountancy. Its purpose is to promote and support basic and applied research in accountancy and related fields and to encourage linkages of research findings to improving accounting practice and education. OAR was founded in honor of Professors Norton M. Bedford and Robert K. Mautz, two of the leading accounting educators and scholars of this century, and is supported entirely by competitive grants and private contributions. In the business world, leading-edge companies are known for their research and development of innovative products. Likewise in education, the leading schools conduct research which leads to new developments in the classroom and in practice. During the past 20 years, accountancy has matured as a scientific discipline, and quality research has yielded significant improvements in, for example, the way we teach and practice auditing. If we at Illinois are to play a major leadership role in accounting education as we enter the 21st century, our faculty and students must be involved in state-of-the-art research and in translating that research into new approaches to teaching and practice. It is quite reasonable to conclude that an investment in today's research is an investment in tomorrow's curriculum and practice.

4.1 What is a trading activity?
A trading activity may be taken to exist where there is a provision of goods or services to a customer for reward on a commercial basis. In order for a trading activity to be granted exemption the profits must be applied solely to the purposes of the charity and either:
  • the trade is exercised in the course of the actual carrying out of a primary purpose of the charity; or the work in connection with the trade is mainly carried out by beneficiaries of the charity. In the case of the University, beneficiaries are normally regarded as the students or the general public not academic or other staff.
Therefore any non-primary purpose trading activity will not be considered exempt for tax purposes.

Career Oriented Curriculum (COC) Pilot Course for Senior Secondary Students
The Association's COC pilot course emphasises the practical element of learning accounting software widely adopted by small and medium enterprises in Hong Kong together with basic accounting knowledge. During the special workshop held by the Vocational Training Council at HKIVE (Haking Wong campus), participants had the chance to get some hands-on experience of MYOB software, under the clear guidance of the instructors. This interactive exercise gave them a better idea of what they could be learning from the course and was found to be very useful for them to understand how practical the course would be.

In particular, the quality of our teaching programmes and student learning matters is closely monitored by administering the Student Feedback Questionnaire (SFQ) at the end of each semester. For developmental purposes, staff may conduct their own SFQ during the semester or request for peer review on a voluntary basis. This quality development process is also supplemented by other School initiatives developing full IT-based teaching and learning, reviewing programme curricula on a continuous basis, and establishing strong links with our stakeholders in Hong Kong and in mainland China.

Basic Accounting 1 – Syllabus Course Description Basic Accounting Part 1 is a 36-week course with 13 lessons. Each lesson takes 12-15 hours to complete and includes textbook readings, interactive chat, threaded discussion, online activities, and a quiz or assessment. During the semester students study the basic concepts of accounting by relating accounting to real-life situations. Students are introduced to a real life business in every chapter where they learn about each company and the way that accounting applies to the business. Students also learn about different careers in accounting as they complete activities in each lesson. Lessons are fully integrated with technology and computer use and students utilize the Glencoe Companion Website with software tutorial directions at the point of instruction for individual applications. Internet resources and activities are accessed through the Glencoe Accounting Website. Students are also encouraged to participate in group research projects and activities throughout the course so that they may collaborate with other students and instructors. Middle-of-course and end-of-course surveys are conducted online, so that students may make suggestions and critique the progress of the course, curriculum content, technology, and teaching methodologies. These suggestions are reviewed and implemented by AMDG staff for continual improvement of course content and delivery.

The program places heavy emphasis on the development of research skills and research quality. In addition, professional skills and the ability to work effectively on faculty guided research teams are required. Consequently, the accounting doctoral program is a full time integrated program of coursework, colloquia, research and teaching activities. Because of course sequencing, students generally begin the program during the fall semester. Program Structure The doctoral program in accounting consists of the following elements: course work, a summer paper, a comprehensive examination, and a dissertation. The latter involves an oral defense of both the dissertation proposal as well as the final dissertation. It is anticipated that all required course work, including accounting seminars, tool courses, and supporting courses, will be completed in two to two and a half years (a total of 46 hours excluding colloquium and dissertation credit). Students must recognize a joint responsibility in their preparation to perform research and, in some cases, may wish to take courses beyond those specified to strengthen their skills and abilities in fields that will contribute to successful completion of their dissertation

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS IN ACCOUNTING Dr. Michael J. Meyer and Kevin P. Babin A Informative Web Site for Prospective Doctoral Students in Accounting Back to Home Page Back to List by School Back to List by State Frequently Asked Questions about Doctoral Programs in Accounting The information provided on this page was created as an outgrowth of the Doctoral Programs in Accounting Conference held at Ohio State University, June 3 and 4, 1983. Though dated, the information remains accurate. Why Enter a Doctoral Program in Accounting? What are the Demands of a Doctoral Program? What are the Characteristics of a Viable Doctoral Program? With Whom Should You Talk Concerning A Doctoral Program? ... What Other Factors Should I Consider Before Deciding to Pursue a Doctorate? Why Enter a Doctoral Program in Accounting? Most prospective doctoral students consider entering a doctoral program in accounting because they want to teach in a university and recognize that the appropriate credential is a doctoral degree. However, a teaching career in a university involves other activities in addition to teaching, and one needs to be aware of these other activities. Clearly, the individual who has not been exposed to a great deal of information regarding a university teaching career has a much narrower view than someone who has been exposed to this information. For example, an academic career provides an infinite variety of challenges to an individual in teaching, research, and service. Challenges in teaching come at all level: undergraduate, graduate, post-doctorate, continuing education, and even in consulting assignments. Research challenge come in many forms, from the more theoretical to the more practical applications of the research skills acquired in a doctoral program. Service requirements may range from a mundane routine committee assignment to very sophisticated international committee work. Thus, a main consideration that should be addressed by the doctoral candidate is to recognize the virtually infinite range of opportunities available to an individual with the desire and ability to earn a doctorate in accounting. (This also may be true f or certain other disciplines.)
