Recent MS-Access Internet database work: We also do modifications to MS-Access desktop applications and ports from MS-Access based backend databases to MS-SQL servers to optimize performance on large databases. Our previous work includes organizations with SQL database servers accessed from MS-Access based front-ends both on LAN (local area networks) and WAN (wide area networks). We are most experienced in these types of SQL/Access database ports and generally no longer design corporate or desktop solutions in MS-Access or MS-SQL server but more focus on Internet application development and conversions. iSeries Access for Windows Database Programming
iSeries Access for Windows provides multiple programming interfaces for accessing database files on the iSeries server. Some of these interfaces are common interfaces, allowing you to write a single application that accesses both the iSeries database and non-iSeries databases. iSeries Access for Windows also supports a proprietary C API to expose the unique strengths of DB2 (R) for iSeries. iSeries Access for Windows provides both Structured Query Language (SQL) and record-level access interfaces. The SQL interfaces provide access to DB2 Universal Database (UDB) for iSeries database files and stored procedures. The record-level access interface provides the fastest access to single records within a file. The IBM DB2 UDB for iSeries SQL Programming book contains detailed information.
How to access the book:
Follow these steps to view a hypertext markup language (HTML) online version of the DB2 UDB for iSeries SQL Programming book, and to print a PDF version:
  • Link to the DB2 Universal Database (TM) for iSeries books online topic in the iSeries Information Center Select SQL Programming Concepts
  • The following iSeries Access for Windows database interfaces expose C/C++ interfaces, however, knowing C/C++ is not a requirement:

3 Credit hours Course Information Course Description:
This course is designed to enable students to develop customized database applications. Subsequent to a brief survey of relational database techniques and methods, the emphasis will be on developing the necessary skills to design, create, and implement user-friendly front ends for relational databases. Using a database engine such as Microsoft Access 2002 (XP), the course will concentrate on developing and coding procedures using VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). Course Objectives: Microsoft Access Access 2002 contained in Office XP was chosen for the vehicle to introduce and facilitate database programming because of its inherent capability of lending itself to custom application development. Microsoft Access enjoys wide usage in business and industry. It is primarily used as a small to medium sized departmental relational database manager. Microsoft Access 2002 is an excellent tool to introduce students to both database concepts and database programming. Access 2002 makes use of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) to accomplish advanced customization and data manipulation, thereby allowing intensive programming techniques to create customized, user-friendly applications. Upon successfully completing this course students should be able to:

It is also available as a standalone program. This book has been updated from the first edition for the release of Office 2000, but much of what is included applies to other versions of Access. The book is organized into six sections. The first section discusses database design concepts such as the Entity-Relationship Model of a Database and Database Design Principles. The author provides concise, but thorough descriptions of the concepts and theoretical examples. There are multiple charts and diagrams to help illustrate the concepts being explained, as well as examples explained using Access terminology, examples of various windows and dialog boxes. Key concepts such as the types of relationships in a relational database, referential integrity, redundancy, and normalization are covered. After the explanation of design principles that consist of breaking down the data into its basic elements, the second section covers putting those elements back together. Topics include query languages generally, relational algebra and relational calculus. Then the author introduces us to Access Structured Query Language (SQL). The discussion is quite detailed and it is here that you get your first real taste of the programming aspects of Access. While Access creates its own queries using SQL, you can modify them or write your own. Descriptions are included of some of the statements used to accomplish this with examples of queries.

Database Programming with OLE and ActiveX
    By Ken North
DBMS , November 1996 Microsoft's newest DB application programming interfaces prime the pump for OLE and Internet developers. The SQL DBMS market has long been a buyer's market. To remain competitive, SQL vendors must improve performance, add features, and reduce prices. Vendors can no longer gain and hold market share based solely on the merits of a database engine or server a rchitecture. Ease of programming has become as much a part of a product evaluation as the results of performance benchmarks. Because programming features affect sales, most DBMS vendors recognize the importance of programming interfaces. The recently ado pted SQL Call Level Interface (CLI) provides little opportunity for product differentiation. In an era when embedded SQL and SQL CLI are standard, how is a vendor to provide unique programming features? The answer is objects.
What Is OLE and Where Did It Come From?
OLE is an enabling technology for building shared, distributed objects. A review of certain Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) and ActiveX concepts will help you understand this article. (See "Understanding OLE," DBMS, June 1995, page 50.) The binary-lev el incompatibility of classes and objects created with C++, Smalltalk, and other OOP languages created a demand for a shared-object architecture. Such an architecture would enable us to share local or remote objects among disparate programming languages and applications. The Object Management Group (OMG) responded with the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), and Microsoft responded with OLE 2.0. OLE is based on a Component Object Model (COM), which provides interoperability at a binary le vel.

    Course Aims
This course is designed to introduce new MS Access 2000 programmers to features and facilities of programming and development in MS Access 2000. Readers will learn about events, reports, controls, macros, data access pages, importing and linking data, sharing an access 2000 database, Data Access Objects (DAO), ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), Data Access Objects (DAO) and ActiveX Data Objects (ADO). This course includes specially prepared exercises that give readers practical experience of programming and development in Access 2000. Assumed Knowledge
A good working knowledge of Windows, the MS Access interface, table creation, basic query and report writing functions, macro development and relational database concepts gained from practical experience or by prior attendance on an "Access Advanced User" course is essential.

She is supported by Mike McCullough, who assists her in the design and testing of Access databases, and James Cerezo, who brings his expertise in Visual Basic and database connectivity to bear on Access programming problems. Handholding
Access programming is the right approach many applications, but oftentimes , the non-programmer hits a "brick wall" in taking a concept past the wizards to actual implementation. Consequently, handholding for those new to Access programming is often big part of our daily work. "Why does this query not work?" "How do I structure this report?" "How can I make my interface more intuitive to the user?" "How can I speed this up?" or even "How do I migrate Access macros to Visual Basic code?" are questions we frequently answer. Other times, we are given a broken or incomplete Access database and are asked to fix it or to add new modules or new reports. Sample Access Programming Projects
    • "RedProTrac" is a Real Estate Development Project tracking system created for the TynanGroup, a nationwide development firm. It tracks large scale construction projects from inception including budget, contracts, change orders, purchasing and owners draw. It took many months of Access programming time and close interaction with the client to make this accounting and project management tool come alive. Microsoft Access was chosen to minimize cost and maximize the lead time for getting the program running.

Presenter R. K. Ege Duration Half day Level Intermediate Day Monday afternoon Location (Room) room E-302 (ESSI) Typical Java applications involve access to a database system. Database systems store data according to their type system. It is therefore necessary to convert Java objects as they are stored in a database, and to re-convert them when they are read. Ideally, this should be done behind the scenes by a support package. This tutorial explores the issues involved: which database technologies are available (legacy vs. relational vs. object-oriented) and which access mechanisms are best suited. The tutorial has 2 parts: (1) accessing a relational database using the Java Database Connectivity (JBDC) package, and (2) storing Java objects in a object-oriented database directly. Audience :
Software professionals who are interested in learning how to access databases from the Java programming language Required experience :
Software developers with working knowledge of Java and some exposure to relational database technology Presenter's profile :
