Administered by the Indiana Association of School Principals and funded by Purdue, the decathlon features teams of students who compete through tests, essays, speeches and interviews to advance to a national competition. Victor L. Lechtenberg, Purdue's vice provost for engagement, said the competition is one way the university fulfills its commitment to bolster K-12 education in the state. "Purdue has a long history of supporting academic excellence in Indiana high schools," Lechtenberg said. "Whether it's sending student volunteers into the classroom, providing training to teachers or serving as a host for academic competitions, Purdue welcomes the opportunity to use its resources to help schools attain higher levels of academic excellence." Stephen Heck, executive director of the Indiana Association of School Principals, said Purdue is a valuable partner in promoting academic success.

Academic Competitions in Science What Are the Rewards for Students?
Clearing House, The May, 2001 by VINEYARD, RICHARD N. Content provided
in partnership with According to Grote (1995) and Mann (1984), many educators encourage participation in extracurricular science activities, such as science fairs and Science Olympiads, as a way for students to further develop science content knowledge, process skills, and interest. Bellipanni and Lilly state that "if students follow the scientific method as they carry out experiments for their science fair projects, it will help them understand scientific concepts" (1999, 46).

Inaugurated in 1998, the NOSB provides an educational forum for students to excel in math and science and receive national recognition for their diligence and talents. NOSB has proven that it can generate student interest and excitement about science and the oceans, giving young people a chance to examine marine science, both as an in-depth area of study and as a possible career. The NOSB fosters collegiality and teamwork, competition, imaginative thinking and factual recollection. It also allows students to work side by side with experts in a wide variety of settings. Of equal importance, NOSB excites and inspires our nation's teachers, providing them with new tools to capture the imagination of their students. Site Map Photo Credits Feedback
