Academic Competitions
There are several different types of academic competitions. These include, but are not limited to local, regional, state, nation and world competitions. It is very exciting and beneficial for students to participate in these competitions. The cost of competitions can be difficult for competing teams and schools, and therefore, sponsors are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternate funding sources; ie. PTA, corporate and local business sponsors. There is some funding support available for national competitions; however, this funding is limited and granted upon request from the school principal and is not guaranteed. Local, state, regional and other competition costs are the responsibility of the each school club. All clubs attending competitions must follow the proper CMS procedures set in place for student travel, chaperones, absences, substitutes and travel procedures. All of these procedures require approval of the school principal and several require additional regional approval depending on the request.

Mock Trial Mock Trial Competition takes high school students to the heart of the justice system. Students acquire critical thinking skills and an in-depth understanding of our judicial process as they study a hypothetical case, conduct legal research, and role play at the trial. Mock Trial is a partnership with the Constitutional Rights Foundation and the Santa Cruz legal community which emphasizes the development of students’ analytical and critical thinking skills. 2004 Mock Trial High School Competition Approximately 140 students from seven schools competed over the course of two weeks with the winner of the local competition moving on to the state finals. Harbor High class of 2000, Mock Trial Team The schools participating in this year's Mock Trial competition were Monte Vista, Harbor, Soquel, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, San Lorenzo Valley and Pacific Collegiate. The students presented their cases before local judges and were scored by area attorneys at the Santa Cruz County Courthouse. Senior Krista Santee, from Scotts Valley High, shares her experience: "A Mock Trial team, by the time competition begins, should be a well-oiled machine. When friends, family, attorneys, and judges arrive at the courthouse on the day of competition, they see the polished, finely tuned machines that never cease to impress. But for me, a high school senior and four-year Mock Trial veteran, Mock Trial season isn’t as much about the final, gleaming product, as it is about the process. The senior veteran members have worked all season to pass on the knowledge that we had gained in the past to younger students with no previous experience. I’ve therefore come to understand that Mock Trial truly is about the process. Personally, I have learned that you can’t truly master a skill until you are forced to teach it to someone else, and Madison vs. Casco has been an ideal vehicle for doing just that.
