edit Early life and writings
He was born in New York of Lithuanian Jewish parents and grew up speaking Yiddish . His parents were orthodox and Louis reacted against this religious tradition at a young age. Nevertheless, his family figured quite strongly in his later writings. As a child, Zukofsky frequented Yiddish theatres in the Bowery where he saw many works by Shakespeare Ibsen Strindberg and Tolstoy performed in Yiddish translations. He also read both Longfellow 's Hiawatha and Aeschylus 's Prometheus Bound in that language. His first real contact with English was when he started school, but he was a quick learner and by the age of 11 had read all of Shakespeare's works in the original.

  • Louis Zukofsky 1904–1978
    American poet and critic.
    INTRODUCTION
The primary theorist of Objectivism, an avant-garde poetry movement of the 1930s, Zukofsky paradoxically remained the most obscure objectivist poet. His extended poem "A," composed over a span of nearly fifty years and published in its entirety just after his death, best evinces Zukofsky's aesthetic aims and originality. In keeping with objectivist principles, "A" employs syntactic fragmentation, disruptive line breaks, unusual typography, terseness, wordplay, minimal punctuation, and similar strategies to call attention to the poem as a constructed object and thing in itself—in contrast with the traditional conception of a poem as an unobtrusive medium for themes, images, and ideas. Such devices also emphasize the ambiguities and complexities of language by placing words in new contexts, thereby multiplying meaning and causing the reader to focus on the sound, rhythm, and appearance of each word. The objectivist poets eschewed abstraction in the form of myth, metaphysics, and cultural and historical theories, preferring to focus on immediate sensory images, historical particulars, and the way that language defines our experiences. Hence, "A" incorporates a wide range of subjects—including music, mathematics, philosophy, politics, the natural sciences, and Zukofsky's personal life—primarily through discussion of and allusion to specific people, texts, and events. Zukofsky's poetry is not widely read or anthologized and his audience has mostly consisted of poets; the verse of writers such as Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Robert Duncan reflects the influence of philosophical, technical, and formal elements in Zukofsky's critical writings and poems.

    Biographical Sketch
Louis Zukofsky was born in Manhattan, on the lower east side, in 1904 to Pinchos and Channa Pruss Zukofsky, immigrants from what is now Lithuania. His father's Orthodox Jewish faith eventually became a point of contention between them, but Zukofsky always recognized the influence his immigrant parents' struggle and faith had on him, writing about it in his early work, "Poem beginning 'The';" and in various early sections of his life-long poem, "A."

Richard Powers after Louis Zukofsky: A Prospectus of the Sky
Joe Amato Prelude I n what follows, I compare the work of a (very much alive) novelist with that of a (very much dead) poet. Specifically, I compare a recent (long) novel to a not-so-recent (long) poem. In doing so, I read what some will call "content" across two distinct literary genres. My reason for reading Richard Powers's The Gold Bug Variations over and against Louis Zukofsky's "A" Richard Powers is an accomplished novelist whose five (soon to be six) novels plumb the controversies, latent and teeming, inherent to our highly technological milieu. I daresay that, for most of my readers, Louis Zukofsky, though an equally accomplished poet, will be a somewhat less recognizable, and more inaccessible, figure. I hope to show why both authors warrant continued scrutiny, why the work of literature, and of reviewing literature as I propose, may be vital to sustaining our social ecologies. I have veered away from the biographical per se . Readers are advised to consult the Terrell anthology cited at essay's end for a fine account of "man and poet," as well as the more recent anthology of essays superbly edited by Scroggins. With regard to Powers's novels, I would simply observe (happily) that more and more critical essays exploring same are making their way into print (e.g., see Labinger). Which raises the issue of enabling technologies. One reason this piece is not

Though never a card-carrying member of the Communist Party, Zukofsky was a sympathizer, and in his issue he presented a group of left-leaning avant-garde poets, the Objectivists. Included were William Carlos Williams, George Oppen, Carl Rakosi and Charles Reznikoff. The disenchanted Zukofsky kept writing, though he turned away from the subjects of labor struggle and capitalism and turned into himself, writing about the more personal subjects of his wife and son.
