‰mile Zola (1840-1902), novelist, journalist, critic and naturalist, was an influential French writer. Aside from espousing the Dreyfuss affair, he was known for his successful books Th©r¨se Raquin and the Les Rougon-Macquart Series of novels.
Early Life
Zola was born in Paris, the son of an Italian engineer. He grew up in Aix-en-Provence, southeast of France, educated at the College Bourbon (now College Mignet). Naturalist writers aimed at an objective depiction of life and regarded human behavior as determined by hereditary instincts and emotions and the social and economic environment, rather than by free human choice. Born in Paris, ‰mile ‰douard Charles Antoine Zola spent his formative years in Aix-en-Provence in the south of France. Although Zola’s father died when ‰mile was seven, ‰mile and his mother remained in Aix until poverty forced them to move to Paris in 1858. There the young Zola eked out a living working as a clerk for the publishing house Hachette and writing literary and political articles for newspapers. His knowledge and understanding of poverty, evident in his later novels, was due in part to personal experience. Zola’s published work began with a collection of stories

Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide Plodding briefly, inaccurately and somewhat risibly through Zola's early career, this solemn biopic improves no end when it gets to its main course: an account of the Dreyfus affair and how the now prosperously ageing Zola rediscovered his youthful ideals in an impassioned fight for justice. Carefully mounted, well directed and acted, but basically the sort of well-meaning pap out of which Oscars are made. Author: TM Time Out Film Guide

A merican R hetoric M ovie S peech "The Life of Emile Zola" (1937) Zola's Open Letter to the President of France Charging Corruption Against the Army Audio mp3 delivered by Paul Muni Zola : Mr. President of the Republic, permit me to tell you that your record without blame so far is threatened with a most shameful blot this abominable Dreyfus affair. A court-martial has recently, by order, dared to acquit one Esterhazy, a supreme slap at all truth, all justice. But since they have dared, I, too, shall dare. I shall tell the truth. Because if I did not, my nights would be haunted by the specter of an innocent being expiating under the most frightful torture a crime he never committed. It is impossible for honest people to read the iniquitous bill of accusation against Dreyfus without being overcome with indignation and crying out their revulsion. Dreyfus knows several languages crime. He works hard crime. No compromising papers are found in his apartment crime. He goes occasionally to the country of his origin crime.

‰mile Zola's Germinal
When I first read Germinal, I came away with the idea that Zola wanted to address issues of economic classes, labor and society, and basic needs of working class people, such as health care and living wages. Sandwiched into these societal issues were more personal challenges such as love, loyalty, honesty, industry and the literary workings of a tragic character. Zola uses irony and he juxtaposes bourgeois families with poverty-stricken families.
Another painting shows several miners at work. Their shirts are off and their bodies are glistening with sweat. The air outside is cold, but in this living hell, temperatures rise dramatically. Their arms and shoulders which have worked in the mines for all their lives should be strong and steady. Instead, they seem weak and exhausted.
The labor/union meeting in the woods is carefully composed. This painting is not quite a landscape, but larger than the intimate paintings we have seen of the miners. We see the group, with ‰tienne, Maheu, Rasseneur all prominently positioned with others eagerly looking on. The peasant dress, the lively discussions, and the fallen branches used as makeshift sitting places all help portray the intensity of the meeting.
I heartily recommend this novel.

Main "For Every Emile Zola, There’s A Harold Pinter" The Memory Hole War And Anti-War In a post that dovetails remarkably well with the material mined by Jonah Goldberg , Neo-Neocon writes, " there’s a long history of literary 'useful idiots ,' people whose critical faculties seem to stop where their art ends. For every Emile Zola, there’s a Harold Pinter": I was reminded of all of this recently when reading the book Partisans by David Laskin . It’s mostly a glorified gossip sheet about the group of writers who were connected to the influential journal Partisan Review during its formative decades, the 30s and 40s. Partisans follows their closely intertwined lives from then through the 60s and beyond; they were an especially active group, however, in their earlier years (and yes, that activity included playing an almost endless game of musical beds). Included were such luminaries as Mary McCarthy, Philip Rahv, Edmund Wilson, Elizabeth Hardwick, and Dwight Macdonald, writers who were exceptionally well-known in their day but who are far less famous now. The following describes their initial reaction to World War II, according to Laskin: They didn’t, at least at first, consider it their war at all, but rather a hopeless conflict between two systems they despised: capitalism and fascism. OF course, they conceded that facism was worse than capitalism, but they believed that if American joined the war against fascism, it was doomed to become fascist itself. As a number of prominent PR writers declared in an open letter published in the magazine, “Our entry into the war, under the slogan of ‘Stop Hitler’, would actually result in the immediate introduction of totalitarianism over here.”
