On this day in 1898 Emile Zola published his "J'Accuse" letter on the Dreyfus Affair in the French newspaper L'Aurore . It listed the eight people (including the President of the Republic) whom he held responsible for the scapegoat conviction of Captain Dreyfus for treason three years earlier. It was ultimately successful, but it also set off a chain of events that would force Zola to flee to England some say it also got him killed.
Alfred Dreyfus was the only prisoner on Devil's Island apart from the French soldiers, the only inhabitant. Although he was allowed a small library, the novels of Emile Zola were not allowed in it. Nor would Dreyfus discover until afterwards that it was Zola's voice which spoke out most passionately and daringly on his behalf, compelling the events which would eventually return him to France and clear him of treason.

, French novelist, b. Paris. He was a professional writer, earning his living through journalism and his novels. About 1870 he became the apologist for and most significant exponent of French naturalism , a literary school that maintained that the novel should be scientific in a strict sense. Inspired by his readings in social history and medicine, Zola decided to apply scientific techniques and observations to the depiction of French society under the Second Empire. He composed a vast series of novels in which the characters and their social milieus are impartially observed and presented in minute and often sordid detail.

The famous French novelist helps free a Jew wrongly convicted by French generals in the infamous Dreyfus case. In 1862 writer Emile Zola (Paul Muni) and painter Paul Cezanne (Vladimir Sokoloff) try to keep warm in a Paris attic by burning a book. Alexandrine (Gloria Holden) tells Zola she found a job for him as a clerk. Zola is officially warned about his book and loses his job. He sees the homeless, war, and military graft. Zola and Cezanne help a prostitute Nana (Erin O'Brien-Moore), who gives Zola her diary. His novel Nana sells 36,000 in three days. The French army is defeated by Germany, and Zola's book explains why. Generals complain to the censor; but Zola writes more books. Zola has become wealthy, and Cezanne says good-bye. Major Esterhazy (Robert Barrat) sends a letter to a German general that is stolen and given to the French general staff. The Jewish Dreyfus (Joseph Schildkraut) is suspected. Major Dort (Louis Calhern) has Dreyfus write and arrests him for treason. Dort has his house searched. Dreyfus is found guilty and degraded; but he proclaims he is innocent. Dreyfus's wife Lucie (Gale Sondergaard) visits him in jail, and in 1895 Dreyfus is sent to Devil's Island prison. Col. Picquart (Henry O'Neill) tells the generals that Dreyfus is innocent; but the chief of staff (Harry Davenport) orders Picquart to keep silent. Esterhazy is acquitted. The forger is questioned by the new war minister, admits he forged the letter, and kills himself. Generals resign. Zola is told, and Dreyfus is sent back to France. Zola goes home and writes a book about justice. Zola tells Alexandrine the world must be conquered but not by force of arms. Smoke leaking from a pipe causes Zola's death, and Dreyfus is reinstated in the army. In the final scene Anatole France praises the humanity of Zola and his quest for justice.

Emile Zola; "Nana", "La Terre", "J'accuse"
Description of the Art Work
"Nana", 1880: Novel part of the series of the Rougont-Maquart. Story of a courtesan. "La Terre", 1887: One of his most grim and outspoken novel on the human condition. "J'accuse", 1898: Zola published concerning the Dreyfus affair-that of a Jewish French army officer whose trial for treason began a 12 year controversy that deeply marked the political and social history of the period - a fierce denunciation of the French general staff in the newspaper L'Aurore. It took the form of an open letter defending the innocence of Dreyfus.
Description of incident
1888 England: Vizetelly, the publisher, was imprisoned for publishing "La Terre"; even in their expurgated editions, ZolaÍs novels outraged the Victorian era. 1898 France: In 1894 Capt. Alfred Dreyfus was degraded and sentenced to Devil's Island for life for allegedly selling military secrets. Firm exonerating evidence was found in 1896, but Army circles suppressed it, denying a new trial, and causing intense protests. Zola denounced the military authorities in an open letter, "J'accuse."

We reprint the Vintage Classics paperback edition (ISBN 0-679-75430-X) with several spelling corrections. We recommend, however, the translation by Stanley and Eleanor Hochman, in the Signet Classic paperback edition (ISBN 0-451-51975-2), because its English is more contemporary and in a few cases is closer to the vulgar French of the original. A Penguin Classics translation is also widely available. Any of these printed books would be easier to read than this online edition. The original text in French has been placed online in ATHENA in Switzerland. Gerard Depardieu , Renaud, Miou-Miou, Jean Carmet, Judith Henry, and Jean-Roger Milo. It was made with the assistance of Region Nord/Pas-de-Calais, Ministere de la Culture et de la Francophone, of Centre Nationale de la Cinematographie, and of Ministere de l'Education Nationale, and supported by Funds Eurimages of the European Council. The film, although it is on two video cartridges, does improve on the book by leaving out many of the author's excesses of bad taste, although we are sorry to see it fails to show the spectacular, cinematic collapse of the mine toward the end of the book. While the working people in the film are treated sympathetically, Zola's treatment in the book veers back and forth, from seeing them as much animals as heroes.

Émile Zola (April 2, 1840 - September 29, 1902) was an influential French novelist, the most important example of the literary school of naturalism and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. Emile Zola
Born in Paris, France, the son of an Italian engineer, Émile Zola spent his childhood in Aix-en-Provence and was educated at the Collège Bourbon. At age 18 he would return to Paris where he studied at the Lycée Saint-Louis. After working at several low-level clerical jobs, he began to write a literary column for a newspaper. Controversial from the beginning, he did not hide his disdain for Napoleon III, who used the Second Republic as a vehicle to become Emperor. More than half of Zola's novels were part of a set of 20 collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Set in France's Second Empire, it traces the hereditary influence of violence, alcoholism, and prostitution in two branches of a family, the respectable Rougons and the disreputable Macquarts, for five generations.
