Emile Zola (1840-1902) French novelist and critic, the founder of the Naturalist movement in literature. Zola redefined Naturalism as "Nature seen through a temperament." Among Zola's most important works is his famous Rougon-Macquart cycle (1871-1893), which included such novels as L'ASSOMMOIR (1877), about the suffering of the Parisian working-class, NANA (1880), dealing with prostitution, and GERMINAL (1885), depicting the mining industry. Zola's open letter J'ACCUSE on January 13, 1898, reopened the case of the Jewish Captain, Alfred Dreyfus, sentenced to Devil's Island. "I am little concerned with beauty or perfection. I don't care for the great centuries. All I care about is life, struggle, intensity. I am at ease in my generation." (from My Hates Anatole France , who failed several times but finally passed. According to one story, Zola was sometimes so broke that he ate sparrows that he trapped on his window sill. Before his breakthrough as a writer, Zola worked as a clerk in a shipping firm and then in the sales department of the publishing house of Louis-Christophe-Francois-Hachette. He also wrote literary columns and art reviews for the Cartier de Villemessant's newspapers. As a political journalist Zola did not hide his antipathy toward the French Emperor Napoleon III, who used the Second Republic as a springboard to become Emperor.

A Bare-Bones Account of the Celebrated Affair
Paris:- Sunday, 11. January 1998:- It will be 100 years on Tuesday, since the date of the publication of Emile Zola's famous 'J'Accuse...!' by the Paris daily, L'Aurore. It was in this house in Paris' ninth arrondissement that Zola wrote 'J'Accuse,' between the evening of Tuesday, 11. January and the day of publication in L'Aurore on Thursday, 13. January 1898. The paper was run by Ernest Vaughan and Georges Clemenceau. They decided that the form would be as 'an open letter to the President 'J'Accuse...!' was, in effect, a point-by-point recapitalization of the entire 'Affaire Dreyfus, which concluded with serious accusations against the chiefs of the French army. This violent attack on the leaders of the French army sold 200,000 copies within two hours, and started the slow process which eventually saw the exoneration of Alfred Dreyfus, in 1906. Suspicion of its authorship fell on Captain Alfred Dreyfus who was attached to the French army headquarters.

It listed the eight people (including the President of the Republic) whom he held responsible for the scapegoat conviction of Captain Dreyfus for treason three years earlier. It was ultimately successful, but it ... set off a chain of events that would force Zola to flee to England some say it also got him killed.

Émile Zola (1840-1902) , French author of many works influential in the naturalism literary school including his series of twenty novels written between 1871 and 1893 that follow the Rougon Macquart family starting with The Fortune of the Rougons (1871). From the Author's Preface; "I wish to explain how a family, a small group of human beings, conducts itself in a given social system after blossoming forth and giving birth to ten or twenty members, who, though they may appear, at the first glance, profoundly dissimilar one from the other, are, as analysis demonstrates, most closely linked together from the point of view of affinity. Heredity, like gravity, has its laws. By resolving the duplex question of temperament and environment, I shall endeavour to discover and follow the thread of connection which leads mathematically from one man to another. And when I have possession of every thread, and hold a complete social group in my hands, I shall show this group at work, participating in an historical period; I shall depict it in action, with all its varied energies, and I shall analyse both the will power of each member, and the general tendency of the whole." Emile Zola, Paris, July 1, 1871

"J'ACCUSE ...!" EMILE ZOLA, ALFRED DREYFUS,
AND
THE GREATEST NEWSPAPER ARTICLE IN HISTORY

Published in Flagpole Magazine , p. 12 (February  11, 1998). Last month marked the centennial anniversary of the greatest newspaper article of all time.  Strangely, the American print and broadcast media barely mentioned the article or its importance or the astonishing story surrounding it. The article, by Emile Zola, the great French novelist, appeared in a Paris literary newspaper, L'Aurore (The Dawn) on Thursday, Jan. 13, 1898, "an essential date in the history of journalism," according to historian Jean-Denis Bredin.  Written in the form of an open letter to the President of France, the 4,000 word article, entitled J'Accuse! (I Accuse!), rightly has been judged a "masterpiece" of polemics and a literary achievement "of imperishable beauty."  No other newspaper article has ever provoked such public debate and controversy or had such an impact on law, justice, and society. The appearance of Zola's article was the greatest day of the Dreyfus Affair, which tormented France for twelve years.  The Affair, "one of the great commotions of history," in the words of historian Barbara W. Tuchman, arose out of the 1894 arrest and conviction for treason of Capt. Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish artillery officer in the French army.  Dreyfus, who was completely innocent, received an unfair trial at his court martial; the prosecution's case had no substance, and the conviction was based on false, supposedly incriminating documents, not introduced into evidence or disclosed to Dreyfus, which were secretly delivered to the trial judges after they had retired to consider their verdict.  Dreyfus was sentenced to life imprisonment and expelled from the army.  He was incarcerated off the coast of South America on Devil's Island from 1895 until 1899.

Emile Zola: Germinal
Zola's technique of "naturalism" attempted through scrupulous research to depict the lives of ordinary people. For Germinal, he descended into a mineshaft very much like the one he describes below, taking detailed notes. Zola's works portray groups of humans in the grip of circumstances beyond their control, often destined to be destroyed in monumental catastrophes. Each mining disaster hinted at in the following passage will actually occur, leaving almost every one of the characters mentioned dead by the end of the novel. Germinal was an eloquent protest against the inhuman working conditions common in late Nineteenth-Century European factories and mines. Etienne Lantier is an out-of-work railway worker who by sheer luck has secured a job in the coal mine called "Le Voreux" (a name suggesting a voracious beast which consumes workers wholesale). This passage depicts the journey into the hell of the mine of the team headed by an experienced miner named Maheu, which includes his teenage daughter, Catherine. What are some striking instances of Zola's use of sounds to convey a vivid impression of the mine?

Are the rights of one man worth inconveniencing an entire nation and showing that the general staff of the army cannot be trusted? Emile Zola answered that question with an emphatic "Yes" and in his campaign for justice for Captain Richard Dreyfus, taught the world a lesson in civil liberties; a lesson that is timely in any age. Zola answered another important question as well, "Is the cause of righting a grave wrong to one man worth risking your own position in society and a comfortable life that you have worked for years to achieve?" Zola also answered that question in the affirmative, putting his membership in the French Academy and his entire future on the line in the Dreyfus Affair.
" The Life of Emile Zola " is a biography of the famous French writer. It describes his rise to prominence as a writer and his pivotal role in the Dreyfus Affair.
