An essay by Mary A. Turzillo Reprinted from the Winter 2003 Ohioana Quarterly I was fresh out of grad school, in the middle of a job interview at Kent State University. At my previous interview, in Pittsburgh (please don’t ask which school, it’s too painful), the chairman of an English department had asked me what I wanted to teach, and I had the temerity to say science fiction. Murmuring arose between the other two interviewers. Do I have to mention that science fiction was not considered respectable back in the seventies? The chairman asked which authors I would teach. I said, Shakespeare, Milton, Voltaire, Swift - I got that far when he snorted and walked out of the room. My theory of science fiction and its place in the world of literature had not met with approval. Perhaps that chairman has since found enlightenment, but I doubt it. So now, as an applicant for this teaching job at Kent, I had no idea how the interview was going. I liked the interviewer, one Carl B. Yoke. As we talked, my gaze wandered to the books on his shelf, including Roger Zelazny’s Damnation Alley . “Zelazny,” I said. “You read science fiction?”

IN MEMORIAM: ROGER ZELAZNY
THE LORD OF LIGHT
He was a poet, first, last, always. His words sang.
He was a storyteller without peer. He created worlds as colorful and exotic and memorable as any our genre has ever seen.
But most of all, I will remember his people. Corwin of Amber and his troublesome siblings. Charles Render, the dream master. The Sleeper, Croyd Crenson, who never learned algebra. Fred Cassidy climbing on his rooftops. Conrad. Dilvish the Damned. Francis Sandow. Billy Blackhorse Singer. Jarry Dark. The Jack of Shadows. Hell Tanner. Snuff.
And Sam. Him especially. "His followers called him Mahasamatman and said he was a god. He preferred to drop the Maha- and the atman, however, and called himself Sam. He never claimed to be a god. But then, he never claimed not to be a god."
Lord of Light was the first Zelazny book I ever read. I was in college at the time, a long time reader who dreamed of writing himself one day. I'd been weaned on Andre Norton, cut my teeth on Heinlein juveniles, survived high school with the help of H.P. Lovecraft, Isaac Asimov, "Doc" Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, and J.R.R. Tolkien. I read Ace doubles and belonged to the Science Fiction Book Ciub, but I had not yet found the magazines. I'd never heard of this Zelazny guy. But when I read those words for the first time, a chill went through me, and I sensed that SF would never be the same. Nor was it. Like only a few before him, Roger left his mark on the genre.

Reviews: "Zelazny has blessed a string of round robin novels by a group of junior authors, based on his idea for a Big Racetrack in the Sky, a place where the greatest racers and the fastest vehicles would come together for the most exciting races ever run... Young readers will find it every bit as fascinating as an earlier generation found PLANET OF LIGHT by Raymond F. Jones or SONS OF THE OCEAN DEEP by Bryce Walton. Carver does a creditable job of moving his part of the story along. Carver and his successors may make fusion race groupies out of us yet." Dan Chow, LOCUS

Roger Zelazny, The Great Book of Amber (Eos, 1999) "Are you human?" he asked, still gripping my hand, no special expression on his face. I started in on a grin, then threw it away. "I don't know. I ... I like to think so, but I don't really ... of course I am! That's a silly ... Oh hell, you really mean it, don't you? And I said I'd be honest." I chewed my lip and thought for a moment. "I don't think so," I said. Corwin, from Sign of the Unicorn Roger Zelazny (1937-1995) was one of science fiction's most renowned writers. He won several Hugo and Nebula awards, and numerous honors from other countries. He is considered one of the earliest writers to embrace the New Wave in science fiction, often focusing on his characters' emotions and motives as well as their actions. He wrote dozens of books and short stories; some of his best-known novels include This Immortal Lord of Light , and, of course, his ten-book Amber series, which has been combined into one large volume, The Great Book of Amber The Amber series can be divided into two sets of five books each. The first set, beginning with

  • Roger Zelazny 1937–
American science fiction novelist, short story writer, and editor. Zelazny's unique blend of fantasy, science fiction, and myth has earned him a prominent position among the writers of imaginative fiction. Zelazny was one of the first exponents, along with Harlan Ellison and Samuel R. Delany, of the new wave science fiction that arose during the mid-1960s in America. Supporters of the movement emphasized a shift in theme from the external world of hard sciences to the internal world examined through such disciplines as psychology, sociology, and linguistics. In the early 1960s Zelazny wrote prolifically for the magazines Amazing Stories and Fantastic , often using the pseudonym of Harrison Denmark. In 1965 he emerged as one of the most important contemporary writers of science fiction when he won Nebula awards for "He Who Shapes" (novella) and The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth

    Roger Zelazny
Roger Joseph Zelazny (May 13, 1937 - June 14, 1995) was a United States writer of fantasy and science fiction short stories and novels. He won the Nebula award three times and the Hugo award six times, including twice for novels: Lord of Light (1968) and ... And Call Me Conrad (1966) (which was later published as This Immortal ). Zelazny was born in Euclid, Ohio, an only child of Josephine Sweet and Joseph Frank Zelazny (Żelazny). His father had emigrated from Poland when he was a young man and met Josephine Sweet in Chicago. In high school, Roger Zelazny was the editor of the school newspaper and joined the Creative Writing Club. In the fall of 1955, he began attending Western Reserve University and graduated with a B.A. in English in 1959. He was accepted to Columbia University in New York and specialized in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, graduating with a M.A. in 1962. Zelazny had a rare gift for conceiving and portraying worlds with plausible magic systems, powers, and supernatural beings. His captivating descriptions of the nuts and bolts of magical workings in his imagined worlds set his fantasy writing apart from otherwise similar authors. His science fiction was highly influenced by mythology, poetry, including the French, British, and American classics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and by wisecracking detective fiction. A frequent theme is gods or people who become gods. His novels and short stories often involved characters from classical myth, depicted in the modern world.
