21. AMBER As Created By Roger Zelazny
This site contains an overview of the series as well as brief biographies of the major royal characters.
http://paradox.of.arden.tripod.com/amber.html
AMBER as Created by Roger Zelazny To quote the Sourcebook, Amber is: The true city, upon which every other city in every shadow is modeled. Though Amber is the center of all things, it, too, is a special shadow of the original Pattern created by Dworkin Barimen. Order in the universe depends on the existence of the true city, and that same Order is a consequence of its existence. In general, the Kingdom of Amber is a very archaic place. Science, as we know it, does not exist there. It is a magical realm where the Royal Blood is truly superior over everyone else. Not only is a royal Amberite the epitome of physical and mental excellence, they also possess the power to regenerate and to walk through the "shadows" - or alternate universes - and bend them to their will. They age so slowly that they are practically eternal. A century is barely anything to them.
This power over shadow gives them the ability to visit worlds and cultures much different than their own Renaissance-like society. A prince or princess of Amber can have knowledge of magic and technology that we can only marvel at, though it is rumored that they have a soft spot for our little shadow world of Earth and enjoy visiting it on a regular basis.
There are ten books in the series.

RogerZelazny.com in memory of one of the greatest fantasy writers Welcome to the future domain of RogerZelazny.com, a site we've long sought to secure in order to honor the literary works of Roger Zelazny, legendary author of the Amber series and other award-winning works who lost a battle with cancer in 1995.
We believe the time is long due for the emergence of Zelazny's Amber characters in a film series which has the scope of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Like Tolkien, Zelazny had a way of narrating a tale which provided pure entertainment and fascination for the reader. His casual, first-person writing style leaves a special and distinctive mark in the world of fiction, and he remains an inspiration to many readers and writers alike.
This site is owned by the author Francis DiPietro and his family, who intend to act as respectful stewards of this domain until such time as they are no longer able, or have seen the goal of gaining proper media recognition for Roger Zelazny's work fully realized.
Here's to the future.

Jenn's Tribute "What do you think is going on, anyway?"
"Some horrible Wagnerian thing", I told him, "full of blood, thunder, and death for us all."
"Oh, the usual."
"Exactly," I replied.
A writing career which spanned over thirty years and changed the face of science fiction came to an untimely end during the summer of 1995 when Roger Zelazny died of cancer at the age of 58. As writers, we should all be so prolific: Zelazny had his first short story published in 1962, and over the next 30+ years went on to publish fifty books and more than 150 short stories, and was hard at work on yet another novel when he died. His well-deserved plaudits included six Hugo awards, two Nebula awards, and a nomination in 1979 for the Gandalf award for Grand Master of Fantasy. Although I had never really been an enthusiastic fan of "New Wave" science fiction, Tim turned me onto Zelazny the year before the author's death, first sparking my interest with Damnation Alley , his only book ever to be made into a (very bad) movie, then making me a fan with Isle of the Dead . New Wave science fiction, which began to be popular around the time that Zelazny started writing, puts a lot of concentration into delving into a character's psyche, and projects characters into bizarre, futuristic scenes - a far cry from the worlds of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, on whom I had cut my literary teeth. But it was impossible not to be won over by Zelazny's incredibly vivid and moving descriptions of even the simplest things, his clever way of putting together a story, and the "New Wave" feel of knowing his characters - feeling as though his characters could be people you might meet in everyday life, rather than from a time long ago or the pages of a book.

Sure, I created this web site ; but, I did not create Ghostwheel. In my mind, Ghostwheel will always be the legendary computer that could move through the Shadows. Created by Merlin, forever a part of Amber , and as much a part of the royal family as any flesh and blood creature. If you have yet to read any of Mr. Zelazny's legion of works, you are missing out. Do not be misled by the naming of my world after a creature of Amber , for Amber is is only a fraction of his work. Amber is perhaps his most widely known, for it was the Fantasy Soap Opera of this generation, but you must read on! Sam was called back from Nirvana to save his people from the tyranny of Vishnu. Legion were his names; for in order to be free, he had to cease to exist. Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes on the same side? I could go on with twisted and tempting thoughts that are but wisps of his stories. But why? I am only wasting the time you could use to lose yourself in his far flung worlds. I'd much rather find that you turned off your computer and visited a book seller. You will find your time and money well spent. Since your computer is still on, and you don't seem to be moving anything more than your mouse hand... I guess I'll just have to point you to on-line sources of information on Mr. Zelazny. I haven't looked hard myself, as I have copies of nearly everything he has written to keep me indulged. If you turn into a junkie and find a resource not listed here, please let

Virtual "Shift" Review List Zelazny's works in Japan
In Japan, since "Damnation Alley" was published in '72', many of Zelazny's works, "The doors of his face, The lamps of his mouth", "This Immortal", "Lord of Light" have been introduced to the Japanese sci-fi fan. Especially, when the original Amber series (The chronicles of Amber 1-5) was translated into Japanese in '78'-'81', many readers and many Japanese sci-fi authors were fascinated about this series (I'm one such reader). I don't know why, but Japanese sci-fi fans have never agreed with "Zelazny's falling down " in the time of the Amber series.
Unfortunately, the late 70's to 80's were a golden age of Zelazny's publication in Japan. After "The Changing Land" was published in 90', not much has been said about publication of Zelazny's works. Even the new Amber series has not been published yet. Zelazny's works are still discussed byJapanese fans. I really hope they will make an Amber Movie to help revive Zelazny's fascinating works.

Executive summary: Damnation Alley Military service: Ohio National Guard One of the most influential writers of science fiction's New Wave era, author Roger Zelazny is best known for such works as Creatures of Light and Darkness Lord of Light Damnation Alley (translated to film in 1977), and his series Amber Chronicles . Like his peers Samuel R. Delany Brian Aldiss J. G. Ballard , and Thomas Disch, Zelazny brought a profoundly psychological twist to the characters and dramas of his fiction, but his unique gift was a powerful infusion of mythology. Together these two elements created not only a higher literary standard within science fiction, but they also helped Zelazny build worlds of remarkable believability, subtlety, and brilliance. Marrying as he did classic mythologies with technologically produced magics, Zelazny often referred to his works as "Science-Fantasy". His favorite character was the self-mocking, immortal jokester. Zelazny's introduction to science fiction came at an early age, and by the time he was a young teen he had written and sold his first science fiction story. But despite this success he decided to set such things aside for a time, deeming himself too immature to produce characters or stories with any depth. After high school he enrolled at Western Reserve University, intending to study poetry and other subjects that would broaden his perspective. But it was not until 1962, after earning M.A. in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama from Columbia University, that he lifted his self-imposed ban on writing. The result, a short story entitled "Passion Play", soon found publication in

    Lord of Light is.....
A metaphysical action adventure love story where the space ship crew colonize an ancient planet, tyrannize the populace, and use technology to turn themselves into powerful gods and goddesses. One man stands alone to fight his old colleagues and free mankind. The planet is called Earth.... Far into the future. Long after the Destruction of their home planet Urath... We find ourselves on an earthlike planet of 3000 years ago. What remains of humankind's descendants are now subjugated by the First Colonists, who were the crew of the starship that brought them to Earth 1000 years ago. They have taken control of ancient technologies that have enhanced themselves with godlike psychic powers and technical immortality. They have adopted an ancient Hindu-like religion and live lives as its Gods, yet surrounded by super-electronic weaponry within the trappings of a primitive civilization. Our story is caught in a classic drama of power, love, honor, pride, fantasy, war … and ultimate transcendence. Our hero is Sam, unready to battle the tyrannical forces of the Celestial City allied with his former wife Candi, who is now the rapturous Kali, The Goddess of Destruction. With her is her new love Yama, The Red Lord of Death. Behind them stands Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and the vast Pantheon of gods and demigods of the City of Heaven. . . .

Review of ROGER ZELAZNY'S THE DAWN OF AMBER by John Gregory Bethancourt
BOOK ONE OF THE NEW AMBER TRILOGY
ibooks, September 2002 Oberon is a soldier, nothing more, and he's fighting a losing and doomed war. At least he is until his long-lost 'uncle' appears to tell him that he is needed elsewhere. Oberon finds himself a part of a large and disputatious familyall princes of Chaos and capable of walking the shadows. Yet Oberon lacks the internal pattern that allows shadow walkingor at least, his pattern is different. Too different to allow him to use the magics available to the others. Which is too bad because the entire family is under attack and, without some major help, all will be destroyed. THE DAWN OF AMBER is set in the late author Roger Zelazny's Amber universe ( see BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by Roger Zelazny ) in the days before the creation of Amber and the shadow reflections that surround it. Author John Gregory Bethancourt does a good job conveying the feel that Zelazny created in his Amber novels. Oberon's family is disfunctional, constantly bickering amongst themselves, and powerful, just as Corwin's family is in the first Zelazny novel in the series. Bethancourt's writing is highly approachable, making DAWN a quick read. I would have preferred, however, for more story to occur. To too large an extent, DAWN sets the stage for future activities, introducing the actors and developing the idea of Oberon's unique pattern. Fans of the Amber series (like me) will enjoy this detail. Even we, are likely to wish that more actually happened in the novel.
