Star of Lisa Zeidner's fourth novel is "fierce, funny and falling apart"
Archived article from Sep 24, 1999 By Caroline Yount Lisa Zeidner was frustrated with the women she encountered. Bouncy young women caught up in the dating scene. Older women, maternal and desexualized. They didn't seem real.
In one sense, these women could never be "real," since they were all characters in novels she had read. But Zeidner, novelist, poet and professor of English at Rutgers-Camden, still found them unbelievable. "These characters and their appointed roles have nothing to do with the lives of most women I know."
So she set out to write a novel that challenged the narrow range of "acceptable" behaviors for women. And she invented a main character, Claire Newbold, who is fierce, funny and falling apart.
Claire is the star of Zeidner's fourth novel, "Layover," released in June by Random House and currently in its third printing. Though the author told a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter that she prefers "the writing part to the publishing part," Zeidner has been pleased with the book's reception. The New York Times and Newsweek are just two of the publications that have given it rave reviews. And Hollywood has come knocking.
A "subtle, astute novel ... Zeidner's fine writing is on glorious display," Karen Karbo wrote in The New York Times, adding, "With 'Layover,' Zeidner joins the ranks of Doris Lessing, Margaret Atwood and Fay Weldon, all of whom have written in the women-spiraling-into-madness genre." Newsweek called the novel "reminiscent of John Updike in its pitiless assessment of everyone's defenses and delusions."

Donald Barthelme - (1931-1989) Philadelphia By Jon Moyer I. Biography Donald Barthelme Jr., short story writer, novelist, editor, journalist, and teacher, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 7, 1931 to Donald and Helen Barthelme. He was the oldest of five children growing up in Houston, Texas. As Donald Sr. was establishing himself as a well-known architect, Donald Jr. sought out on journalism at his hometown schools, St. Thomas and Lamar High School in Houston. When Donald Jr., graduated from high school he wanted to pursue his vocation in journalism and in the fall of 1949, he enrolled at the University of Houston where he worked and later ran the Daily Cougar. Just as Barthelme began to see his career develop in front of him, he was drafted into the Army right before he was about to graduate. However, to his delight, while doing his service he was asked to work for an Army newspaper. When he returned about two years later, he got a job as a reporter for the Houston Post. In the following years, Barthelme moved up and became the editor of Acta Diurna, a weekly newsletter for the University of Houston's faculty and staff. As time went on Barthelme founded and edited a paper called the Forum at the University. As people began to see his capability, he soon was asked and agreed, to be the director of the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. However, following his heart's desire he resigned one year later to become a contemporary fiction and fantasy writer.

Gracie Pollock should have suspected that her movie executive husband, Kenny, was cheating on her when he began to wear the earring. But she missed the clues, and at the age of 41 which makes her, as a Hollywood woman, almost assisted-living-ready Kenny dumps her via cell phone, weeks before their pre-nup would have expired. The heroine of Gigi Levangie Grazer's third novel, The Starter Wife , thus plummets from being a classic Wife Of, botoxed and boob-jobbed "easy on the eyes and hard on the 401(k)" to being a single mother confronting survival without resources. Well, not quite without resources: She and her 4-year-old-daughter are invited to housesit another Wife Of's glam Malibu digs. So she has a reprieve during which to become reacquainted with her true self and, with luck, snare another man. "Could a woman over a certain age in Los Angeles be able to find a (reasonable) date?" No reader of this good-natured, fluffy novel will doubt for an instant that she can. Grazer, herself the wife of a Hollywood producer, wrote the screenplay for the feel-good tearjerker "Stepmom," and

This additional material for the Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Records contains editorial files spanning 1949-1984, concentrated in the latter years 1970-1984. The files, received at the Ransom Center in 1996, are arranged in two series: I. Editor Files, 1965-1984; II. Editorial Department Files, 1949-1983. Series II. is further subdivided into three subseries. Subseries A. Contract Data Sheets is arranged alphabetically by author in folders labeled A to L for the years 1949-1971, completing earlier accessions that contained only letters M to Z. As with the latter part of the alphabet, these data sheets contain information on the author's contract and sales records, highlighting rights, contract options, translations, and royalties. The Foreign Rights files in Subseries B. contain correspondence and internal forms relating to the publication of Knopf books in other countries, primarily European nations, but also Japan, Canada, and South Africa. Arranged alphabetically by author, each file pertains to one author and one book for the years 1981-1983.

... Spring 1991 I worked at North Point Press from 1980 through 1988. The press closed in spring 1991 (I'm not certain all the books listed here for the last two seasons came out). The name and portions of the backlist were sold to , which had distributed the press's books in the later years. FSG seems to regard the presswrongly, from my perspective, but perhaps this makes marketing sense for themas a California lifestyle publisher, and they have been putting out a lot of cooking and Western regional books under the imprint, which no longer bears much resemblance to the Albany, California, publishing company that had some influence on publishing in the 1980s (unfortunately, that battle has been lost , at least for the moment). North Point always published on a two-season schedule. At some point I might put up some commentary about North Point's books and program; for now, this is a list (with a few links: I'll add more later) of the original NPP's publications, season by season (paperback editions of books previously issued in hardcover are treated, for the moment, as new publications).
