In a perfect world
Yevgeny Zamyatin's far-out science fiction dystopia, `We,' showed the way for George Orwell and countless others.
July 23, 2006 IT IS WITH REGRET that I see, instead of an orderly and strict mathematical epic poem in honor of the One State-I see some kind of fantastic adventure novel emerging from me." So laments D-503, mathematician and rocket designer, halfway through Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin's dystopian novel ``We." Completed in 1921, but not published in Russia until 1988, half a century after Zamyatin's death, it appears this month from the Modern Library in a new English translation by Natasha Randall. Zamyatin's vision of a totally controlled society, one in which unresisting citizens eat, sleep, work, and make love like clockwork-and in which thinkers and writers sing the glories of ``the morning buzz of electric toothbrushes and . . . the intimate peal of the crystal-sparkling latrine"-was considered too dangerously satirical by the early Soviet state, and it was smuggled abroad in samizdat form. Written a decade before Aldous Huxley's ``Brave New World," its influence can be seen in George Orwell's ``1984," and it has been hailed as a warning of the totalitarian dangers inherent in every utopian scheme. (Orwell, who believed Huxley had read ``We," wrote in 1946, three years before ``1984" was published, that Zamyatin's ``intuitive grasp of the irrational side of totalitarianism-human sacrifice, cruelty as an end in itself" made the novel ``superior to Huxley's.")

Yevgeny Zamyatin
Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884 - 1937) was the creator of the novel "We" (1920), a science fiction satire on totalitarianism that was both notable and extremely influential. He also wrote shorter fiction, mostly satirical, that remains less well known but has much to offer students of the early Soviet period of Russian literature. The first book banned in the young Soviet Union, We was not published in Russian in a complete version until 1952, and was not officially approved until the perestroika era of cultural openness that preceded the fall of Communism. It circulated in manuscript, however, and was well known to a variety of Russian writers. The novel's greatest influence was visible abroad; it was admired by English novelist George Orwell and was a key predecessor to . The extent of its influence on another major work of futurism, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World , has been debated; Huxley denied that he had read the book, but

In 1914 he wrote a novella, At the World's End, satirizing the life of army officers, and was tried but acquitted of "maligning the officer corps'. He lived in Newcastle upon Tyne in 191617, where he wrote two satires on the English, Islanders and A Fisher of Men, both set in Newcastle. Although supportive of the 1917 revolution, he was also an outspoken critic, and he was among the first writers to be hounded by the party apparatchiks. In 1920 he wrote My (We), which was circulated in manuscript (and never published in the USSR), a fantasy set in the 26th-c AD; this prophesied Stalinism and the totalitarian state, and led to the banning of his works. His best stories are contained in The Dragon, first published in English in 1966. With Gorky's help he was allowed to leave Russia in 1931, and he settled for exile in Paris. stagnant societies in kafka's the trial and zamyatin's we
Yevgey Zamyatin in his essay, “On Literature, revolution, Entropy, and other Matters” defines what he calls the law of revolution to complement the law of entropy. The law of revolution “is red, fiery deadly; but this death means the birth of a new life, a new star. And the law on entropy is cold, ice blue, like the icy interplanetary infinites. The flame turns from red to an even, warm pink, no longer deadly, but comfortable. The sun ages into a planet, convenient for highways, stores, beds, prostitutes, prisons: this is the law. And if the planet is to be kindled into youth again, it must be set on fire, it must be thrown off the smooth highway of evolution, this is the law” (“On Literature” 108). According to this law, society slowly evolves until it reaches a point of stagnation when it needs revolution to bring change. The societies constructed in We and The Trial reinforce Zamyatin’s theory; both societies have reached such stagnation and need revolution to bring change. The main characters stand as symbols of the heretics everywhere that rebel against the absurdity of a community that has reached an idle state. Zamyatin creates in We The world of One State evolves to a point where it reaches stagnation. D-503 describes human history as “the history of moving from nomadic life to a more settled way of life”,(

Yevgeny Zamyatin's "We": the first dystopian novel
I first read "We" in my teens and didn't understand a word of it. It was only after reading Orwell, Huxley and Bradbury that it all began to fall into place. It's hard to believe that it didn't influence 1984. "We" is something of a forgotten classic and I'd definitely recommend it. Wes Unruh's piece is a great introduction.
The One State is overseen by the Benefactor, a deific figure portrayed with heavy hands, and a network of Guardians, who watch for anyone that might display the slightest irregular behavior. The One State exists within a glass dome, the rest of the planet supposedly rendered inhospitable during the Two Hundred Year War. Every building is made of this same glass, enabling any behavior not proscribed by the Table of Hours, the sacred text of the One State, to be easily seen and reported. Yevgeni Zamyatin was born in Lebedyan, Russia , on 20th January, 1884. The son of a teacher, Zamyatin trained as a naval engineer at St Petersburg. While a student joined the Bolshevik faction of the Social Democratic Labour Party (SDLP). He later wrote: "To be a Bolshevik in those years meant following the path of greatest resistance, so I was a Bolshevik then." Zamyatin's support of the Bolsheviks resulted in him being arrested and sent into exile. He returned during the 1905 Revolution and joined the student demonstrations against Nicholas II . Zamyatin was arrested, badly beaten and sent to Spalernaja Prison where he had to endure several months of solitary confinement. After graduating Zamyatin became a lecturer at the Department of Naval Architecture. He wrote several articles on ship construction for journals such as The Ship and Russian Navigation . He also wrote fiction and in 1913 published the novel A Provincial Tale . This was followed by At The World's End (1914), a satire on military life. This upset the censors and Zamyatin was brought to trial but was acquitted. However, the book was banned and all copies were destroyed.

Zamyatin, Evgeny Ivanovich . Born on 1 February 1884 in Lebedyan, Tambov guberniya. His father was a priest. His mother was an educated woman who loved literature and played the piano. As a child, he claims that his friends were books. Years later, he wrote:
"I still remember how I shivered over Dostoevsky's Netochka Nezvanova and Turgenev's First Love . These were my elders and, perhaps, a bit terrifying. Gogol was a friend." In 1902, he graduated from the Voronezh Gymnasium with a Gold Medal, which he pawned some months later for 25 rubles. He went on to enroll in the Shipbuilding Institute in Petersburg. During summers, he did practical work in factories and ships, including one journey from Odessa to Alexandria, with many stops in between. He was in Odessa during the mutiny on the Potemkin . He joined the Bolsheviks and took part in the revolutionary events of 1905. At one point, his room was a clandestine printing press. For his political activities, in 1905 Zamyatin was arrested, beaten up, locked in solitary for several months, then banished from Petersburg. He managed to return to the capital some time later, however, and illegally graduated from the Shipbuilding Institute in 1908, after which he joined its faculty.

Chapter One
Zamyatin: WE record one keywords: A Declaration. The Wisest of Lines. A Poem. I am merely copying, word for word, what was printed in the State Gazette today: In 120 days, the construction of the Integral will be complete. The great, historic hour when the Integral will soar through the Earth's atmosphere is nigh. Some thousand years ago, your heroic ancestors subjugated the Earth to the power of the One State. Today, you are confronting an even greater conquest: the integration of the infinite equation of the universe with the crystalline, electrified, and fire-breathing Integral. You are confronting unknown creatures on alien planets, who may still be living in the savage state of freedom, and subjugating them to the beneficial yoke of reason. If they won't understand that we bring them mathematically infallible happiness, it will be our duty to force them to be happy. But before resorting to arms, we will employ words.
