He starts by forcing everyone, himself included, to live in a big barrack, then to shave heads to be equal to the bald, and then to become mentally disabled to equate intelligence downward. This plot is very similar to that of The New Utopia (1891) by Jerome K. Jerome whose collected works were published three times in Russia before 1917. Russian novelist, playwright, and satirist. Educated as a naval engineer, he combined a scientific career with writing. A chronic dissenter, he was a Bolshevik before the Russian Revolution of 1917 but disassociated himself from the party afterward. His ironic criticism of literary politics kept him out of official favour. His most ambitious work, the novel We (1924; not published in the Soviet Union until 1988), was the first anti-utopian novel and the literary ancestor of Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World and George Orwell 's Nineteen Eighty-four document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Yevgeny Zamyatin" from the 32 Volume Zamyatin, Yevgeny Ivanovich - Russian novelist, playwright, and satirist, one of the most brilliant and cultured minds of the postrevolutionary period and the creator of a uniquely modern genre-the anti-Utopian novel. Yevgeny Ivanovich Zamyatin (1884-1937) - name also written Evgenii Ivanovich Zamiatin Russian novelist, playwright, short story writer, and essayist, whose famous anti-utopia My (1924, We) prefigured Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World ( 1932), and inspired George Orwell' s (1949). The book was considered a "malicious slander on socialism" in the Soviet Union, and it was not until 1988 when Zamyatin was rehabilitated. In the English-speaking world My has appeared in several translations. "And then, just the way it was this morning in the hangar, I saw again, as though right then for the first time in my life, I saw everything: the unalterably straight streets, the sparkling glass of the sidewalks, the divine parallelepipeds of the transparent dwellings, the squared harmony of our gray-blue ranks. And so I felt that I - not generations of people, but I myself - I had conquered the old God and the old life, I myself had created all this, and I'm like a tower, I'm afraid to move my elbow for fear of shattering the walls, the cupolas, the machines..." http://www.greenmanreview.com/book/book_zamyatin_we.html
Yevgeny Zamyatin (English translation by Mirra Ginsburg, 1972), We (Avon Eos, 1999) This novel has served as the inspiration for what has become, if not a genre, then at the very least a dominant sub-genre of science fiction. It is the first major dystopian novel, a precursor to George Orwell’s , Aldus Huxley’s Brave New World , and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 , and its history, along with that of its author, eerily mimics some of the themes of those other books. Written and completed in 1920, We was first published in English in 1924, then in Czech in 1927. It wouldn’t be published in Russian until 1952, some fifteen years after Zamyatin’s death. Even then, it was not published in Russia, but by the Chekhov Publishing House in New York. The edition I read for this review was translated by Mirra Ginsberg for publication in 1972, and has a wonderful introduction further outlining the major events in Zamyatin’s life. However, it is not necessary to be intimately familiar with the totalitarian political structure of Stalin’s Russia to feel the full impact of We . Instead, the clarity of this book’s language and the amazing characterization and plotting carry the reader into a world both absurd and nightmarish, transcending what must have been the oppressive atmosphere in which it was written.

Document Actions Before Orwell gave us Nineteen Eighty-Four (in 1948), we had another novel describing a futuristic dystopia in Yevgeny Zamyatin's We (1921). As Zamyatin himself said, the work is both his most serious and most lighthearted work. It's surely one that deserves consideration. Born in 1884, Zamyatin loved liberty, which put him at odds with the tsar of his native Russia. Opposing the tsar by joining the Bolshevik party earned him the distinction of being arrested and exiled in 1905. Zamyatin found his way back into the country, managed to complete his degree in naval engineering in 1908, became a member of the faculty of the Institute, and published stories about his small hometown, Lebedyan. In 1911, the tsar's police force finally identified him and exiled him once again. Tsar Nicholas II instituted a policy of amnesty in 1913, which allowed Zamyatin to return to the country legally. We We was published in Russia for the first time in 1987, during
