His first poem appeared in a Soviet sports journal. Shortly afterward, his long epic poems began to be widely published in Soviet literary journals and magazines. Although his first collection of poetry received official Soviet praise, Yevtushenko was soon criticized for his themes of intellectual freedom. Consequently, his epic poem, Zima Junction (1956; trans. 1962), concerned with the moral confusion of a young man in the post-Stalinist Soviet Union, was officially condemned. Yevgeny Yevtushenko looks askance at money
By Tamar Alexia Fleishman
Russian poet, filmmaker, politican and activist Yevgeny Yevtushenko is a fourth-generation descendant of Ukrainians exiled to Siberia. He gained international fame in 1961 with "Babi Yar," in which he denounced Nazi and Russian anti-Semitism. The classical composer, Dimitri Shostakovich, set his Symphony No. 13 to this poem. The 6-foot-3-inch Yevtushenko received a great deal of attention, especially in the United States. Yevtushenko's poem, "The Heirs of Stalin" (1961), published with Communist Party approval in Pravda, was not republished until 1987. The poem contained warnings that vestiges of Stalinism remained alive after the dictator's death. Yevtushenko's demands for greater artistic freedom, as well as his repeated attacks on Stalinism and bureaucracy in the late 1950s and '60s made him a leader of Soviet youth. Still, he was allowed to travel widely in the West until 1963. That was when he published "A Precocious Autobiography" (in English); his travel privileges and favors were quickly withdrawn for two years. In 1972, Yevtushenko gained huge success with his play, "Under the Skin of the Statue of Liberty."

March 2nd, 2007 whole poem , as I will be taking it lines at a time: And if a man lived in obscurity
making his friends in that obscurity
obscurity is not uninteresting. tautological Homage to a Government To each his world is private
and in that world one excellent minute. And in that world one tragic minute
These are private. In any man who dies there dies with him
his first snow and kiss and fight
it goes with him. There are left books and bridges
and painted canvas and machinery
Whose fate is to survive. But what has gone is also not nothing:
by the rule of the game something has gone.
Not people die but worlds die in them. We who knew our fathers in everything, in nothing. They perish. They cannot be brought back. The secret worlds are not regenerated. And everytime again and again I make my lament against destruction. Filed under: Words Trackback

    by Vera Zherdeva
Yevgeny Yevtushenko, one of the best-known contemporary Russian poets at home and abroad, marked his 65th birthday on July 18. The poet belongs "the generation of the 60s", the years of liberalization following decades of a totalitarian regime, the time when Stalin's personality cult was shattered, thousands of political prisoners were rehabilitated and released from labor camps, censorship became less strict, and the country at large could experience the first feelings of freedom. Many writers and poets who had just started writing at that time were rapturous about the changes. Among them was the young poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko who started publishing at the age of 16. Like many others, he saw the changes in the country in a rosy light. It was years later that he became disallusioned, as the state machine restored its grip on the country. "I have lived a rich life," the poet says. "I began publishing in 1949. And of course, I've gone through several stages. Critics often take a work written at 14 or 15 and compare it with another written at 30. Then they ask when the poet was sincere, forgetting to differentiate between hypocrisy and evolution. One must always be able to see the difference."
