Born Yevgeni Aleksandrovich Gangnus (later he took his mother's last name, Yevtushenko) in the Irkutsk region of Siberia in a small town called Zima Junction . His maternal grandfather, named Ermolai Naumovich Evtushenko, had been a Red Army officer during the Russian Revolution and the Civil War (both of Yevtusheko's grandfathers were arrested as "enemies of the people" in 1937 during Stalin's purges). The future poet's father, named Aleksandr Rudolfovich Gangnus, was a geologist, as was his mother, named Zinaida Ermolaevna Evtushenko, who later became a singer. The boy accompanied his father on geological expeditions to Kazakhstan in 1948, and to Altai, Siberia, in 1950. Young Yevtushenko wrote his first verses and humorous songs "chastushki" while living in Zima, Siberia.

Metro Metroactive Central Poet as Witness

Russian novelist and literary legend Yevgeny Yevtushenko reads at San Jose State By Richard von Busack Yevgeny Yevtushenko is perhaps Russia's best-known living poet. As such, and as a figure of dissent, he is to Russia what Bob Dylan once was to America. Like Dylan, Yevtushenko was a star. At least once, Yevtushenko filled a stadium to hear him read; at a time of national crisis, he could be seen declaiming on the barricades. He was well-known enough in left and intellectual circles here to be parodied in Doonesbury . He will be 63 this year, however, and in his new novel, Don't Die Before You're Dead (Random House), he looks at himself with an irony and skepticism that Dylan has never mustered. He will read from the novel this Friday at San Jose State University as a guest of the Center for Literary Arts. Yevtushenko witnessed the crucial historical moment in August 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, which is the subject of Don't Die Before You're Dead . Through both fictional and real-life characters (including himself), Yevtushenko is present to watch the failure of the military coup, to watch the army tanks rolling on grounds littered with torn-up Communist Party cardsand to watch the soldiers refuse to turn their guns on their own people. In recalling the tension of that moment, Yevtushenko reminds the reader that the coup's hard-line Communist planners had ordered up a quarter of a million pairs of handcuffs for the aftermath of their takeover.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko was born in Zima, Irkutsk, on 18th July, 1933. He was the descendant of a family exiled to Siberia. Influenced by the work of Vladimir Mayakovsky and Sergei Yesenin , he began writing poetry and achieved fame with his long narrative poem, Stantsiya Zima His poem, Baby Yar (1961) dealt with the Nazi massacre of 34,000 Ukrainian Jews . Some critics saw this poem as an attack on Soviet anti-Semitism. In 1962 the official party newspaper published his poem Heirs of Stalin . The poem describes the burial of Stalin but at the end suggests that the problems are not yet over: "Grimly clenching his embalmed fists, just pretending to be dead, he watched from inside. He was scheming. Had merely dozed off. And I, appealing to our government, petition them to double, and treble, the sentries guarding the slab, and stop Stalin from ever rising again." Books by Yevtushenko include Precocious Autobiography Bratsk Station Under the Skin of the Statue of Liberty (1972) and Wild Berries Available from Amazon Books (order below)

Russian poet. The descendant of Ukrainians exiled to Siberia, he grew up in Moscow and in the small town that is the setting of his first important narrative poem, Zima Junction (1956). He became the spokesman for the post-Stalin generation of Russian poets with his internationally publicized demands for greater artistic freedom, which signaled an easing of Soviet control over artists in the late 1950s and '60s. He revived brash, slangy language and traditions such as love lyrics and personal lyrics, frowned upon under Stalinism. His poem Baby Yar (1961) was an attack on lingering Soviet anti-Semitism; his most ambitious cycle of poems is Bratsk Station (1966). He became famous worldwide for his passionate recitations. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Yevgeny Yevtushenko" from Britannica Concise Baby Yar - Large ravine near Kiev, Ukraine, the site of a mass grave of some 100,000 people killed by German Nazi SS squads between 1941 and 1943.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko The best known Russian poet of the post-Stalin generation, Yevtushenko's demands for greater artistic freedom and his attacks on Stalinism in the late 1950s and 60s made him a leader of Soviet youth. Yevgeny Yevtushenko was born in Zima in Irkutsk in 1933, as a fourth-generation descendant of Ukrainians exiled to Siberia. He moved to Moscow in 1944, where he later studied at the Gorky Institute of Literature. His first important narrative poem Zima Junction was published in 1956 but he gained international fame in 1961 with Babi Yar , in which he denounced the Nazis and at the same time clumsily criticized his own country for forgetting the message of the Internationale "But those with unclean hands
have often made a jingle of your purest name.
I know the goodness of my land.
How vile these anti-Semites - without a qualm
    they pompously called themselves
the Union of the Russian People." Babi Yar is one of a number of literary treatments of a massacre of Jews in occupied Kiev on September 29, 1941. The poem was not published in Russia until 1984, although it was frequently recited in both Russia and abroad. Yevtushenko has remained politically outspoken all of his life, though he was sometimes critisized in the West for being too soft. In 1987, when Yevtushenko was appointed an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Russian-born poet Joseph Brodsky resigned in protest he considered his colleague a party yes man. Brodsky has bitterly stated: "He throws stones only in directions that are officially sanctioned and approved." Yevtushenko's readers, however, have defended the poet faithfully, stating that "you can't blame him that he survived." In 1993 Yevtushenko received a medal as 'Defender of Free Russia,' which was given to those who took part in resisting the hard-line Communist coup in August 1991.

    When your face
    appeared over my crumpled life
    at first I understood
only the poverty of what I have.
    Then its particular light
on woods, on rivers, on the sea,
became my beginning in the coloured world
in which I had not yet had my beginning.
I am so frightened, I am so frightened, of the unexpected sunrise finishing, of revelations and tears and the excitement finishing. I don't fight it, my love is this fear, I nourish it who can nourish nothing, love's slipshod watchman. Fear hems me in. I am conscious that these minutes are short and that the colours in my eyes will vanish when your face sets. Back to Poems in alphabetical order Back to Poems sorted by author

Yevgeny Yevtushenko (1933-) name also spelled Jevgeni Jevtusenko; Evgenii Evtushenko Internationally one the best-known poets of the post-Stalin period, who became with such work as The Third Snow (1955) a spokesman for the young generation. Throughout the Khrushchev and the Brezhnev periods Yevtushenko travelled widely abroad, giving readings as a symbol of a new freedom in the Soviet Union. Especially in the United States the 6-foot-3-inch Siberian poet received a great deal of attention. Yevtushenko's early poems show the influence of Mayakovsky . In spite of his outspokenness and conflicts with the authorities, he was also loyal to communism. "Why is it that in folk songs of all nations and all ages people express the desire to become birds? Because birds know no borders. People are mortally envious of animals for their freedom, and probably that is why we try to deprive them of it by forcing borders on them be they the barriers of zoo, the bars of a circus cage, or the transparent but still prison-like walls of an aquarium. People insult their one God-given planet with impassable fences (which Robert Frost described with such a bitter irony)
