William Butler Yeats: The Man, The Writer
Peer Critique
Born in Dublin in the year 1865, William Butler Yeats would go on to become universally recognized by his peers as the greatest poet of this century writing in the English language. This recognition would come as early as 1828, a decade before his death with the publication of arguably his finest volume, The Tower (Fraser, 207). The son of one time attorney and later well known painter John Butler Yeats, W.B. Yeats was of partially Cornish and Gaelic decent, born near Dublin and raised between both England and Ireland. Though born in Dublin and raised between England and Ireland, Yeats would develop, through his mother, a love for the west country of Ireland that would last all his life. Parts of his childhood and later vacations would be spent in County Sligo, the childhood home of both his parents. Yeats would later depict his beloved County Sligo in such works as "The Lake Isle of Innisfree". These works would serve as a symbol of his imaginative escape from the disappointments and unpleasant realities of life (Magill, 1957). Yeats's childhood would be broad in education and personal experiences. Yeats would become a youth full of internal contradictions, often spawned by his desire to question all that he was taught. Spiritually, educationally, and personally, Yeats seemed to himself pulled in different directions, unable to decide on a clear path. These internal contradictions would come to shape the writer and man that he would one day become.

Opinion
An intellectual hate is the worst. Hate Beauty is truth, truth beautythat is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. Beauty Draw rein, draw breath, Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by! Death Life Time I think it better that in times like these a poet's mouth be silent, for in truth we have no gift to set a statesman right. Silence In dreams begins responsibility. Responsibility Joy is the will which labors, which overcomes obstacles, which knows triumph. Joy O what fine thought we had because we thought that the worst rogues and rascals had died out. Death One should not lose one's temper unless one is certain of getting more and more angry to the end. Anger Supreme art is a traditional statement of certain heroic and religious truth, passed on from age to age, modified by individual genius, but never abandoned.

Am C G As I went out one evening to take the evening air F G C F I was blessed by a blood-red moon Dm G Am G In Lincoln Park the dark was turning I spied a fair young maiden and a flame was in her eyes And on her face lay the steel blue skies Of Lincoln Park, the dark was turning Turning They spread their sheets upon the ground just like a wandering tribe And the wise men walked in their Robespierre robes Through Lincoln Park the dark was turning The towers trapped and trembling, and the boats were tossed about When the fog rolled in and the gas rolled out From Lincoln Park the dark was turning Turning Like wild horses freed at last we took the streets of wine But I searched in vain for she stayed behind In Lincoln Park the dark was turning I'll go back to the city where I can be alone And tell my friend she lies in stone In Lincoln Park the dark was turning

Lady Gregory

Among the many biographies of Yeats are W.B.Yeats: A Life by R. F. Foster. Volume 1: The Apprentice Mage. (Oxford University Press, 1997); and W.B. Yeats: A Life: Arch-poet 1915-1939 v. 2 (OUP, 2003).

William Butler Yeats
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) lived for poetry by the age of 19. Born in Dublin, he would become arguably one of the best English-language poets of the 20th century.
As a child, Yeats lived between County Siglo, Ireland and London. He was a mediocre student until he discovered poetry and mysticism. At 20, he founded the Dublin Hermetic Society. By 25, he was president of the Irish National Theatre Society. He had already written several poems and plays on his own, and would soon be known as the leader of the Irish Literary Renaissance.
Yeats is best known for the dense combinations of symbolism, mysticism, history, philosophy and psychology in his poetry. One of his most famous works, "The Second Coming," broke away from romantic influences and developed the reputation Yeats needed to win the

What is Magic?
The magic of everyday life - alternative cognative psychology The Reification of Time - VIII What is Higher Consciousness? - I
What is reincarnation? To begin with, reincarnation does not take place within a matrix of linear time. It’s not as if e.g. you had a life in ancient Greece and then you died; then you had a life in ancient Rome and then you died; then you had a life in the Middle Ages and then you died; etc. Rather, all of your past and future lives are going on at once, in an eternal NOW moment. Think of it like this: survivors of near-death experiences often report seeing all the events that ever happened to them flash by them in no time at all. Thus it would seem that we experience the thought forms of our lives twice – once in linear fashion over a lifetime, and the second time around in timeless fashion at the moment of death. In an analogous manner, while there is indeed an evolution going on in the universe, this evolution is not taking place in linear time: it’s all happening at once. Space and time have no objective existence.

He is not easily moved by emotional displays and can be curiously detached from his own emotions and those of others. It is almost as if he could turn his feelings on and off at will; W.B. Yeats should be careful not to leave the switch "off" too often, for he could easily become too impersonal. Family relationships and attachments are not as important to him as they are to most people and Yeats often considers his friends closer to him than his blood relatives. Certainly, Yeats' sympathy and concern extends much beyond his immediate family. In his personal relationships, William Butler Yeats insists upon a certain amount of independence and the freedom to pursue friendships with as many people, of both sexes, as he chooses. W.B. Yeats does not appreciate a jealous, possessive partner. William Butler Yeats feels comfortable in an atmosphere that is open and experimental, and he has little taste for convention and tradition.

    Down by the Salley Gardens
Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet; She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet. She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree; But I, being young and foolish, with her did not agree. In a field by the river my love and I did stand, And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand. She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs; But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
    The Lake Isle of Innisfree
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made: Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet's wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart's core.
