On this day in 1939, just a week before his death, W. B. Yeats wrote his last poem, "The Black Tower." Two decades earlier he had purchased a Norman tower near Coole, in Galway Thoor Ballylee. Since 1965 it has been a Yeats museum and a popular tourist spot, though not as popular as his gravesite in the Drumcliff churchyard of his ancestors where his own remains may or may not be buried. WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS (1865-1939) The following biography was originally published in The British and American Drama of Today. Barrett H. Clark. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1915. pp. 181-2. William Butler Years was born in Dublin in 1865. The son of an artist, his early education was received in his native city and in London. Early in his career he identified himself with numberous attempts to revive the legends and literature of ancient Ireland; in this connection his most important activity was the foundation, together with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn, and George Moore, of The Irisn Literary Theater. Yeats spent many years in collecting folk-lore; his he utilized in many of his plays and collected into volumes of prose essays. Outside his dramatic work, essays and collections of legendary material, are his poems, undoubtedly that part of his total output by which he will be longest remembered: Poems, first and second series, The Wanderings of Oisin, The Secret Rose, and The Wind Among the Reeds "The future will look back to Mr. Yeats as to a landmark in the literary history of Ireland, both because of his artistic achievement and because he has been a leader in a remarkable movement. Through his poetry the Celtic spirit moves like a fresh wind," says H.S. Krans, in his [book]

    The Stolen Child
      W HERE dips the rocky highland
      Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
      There lies a leafy island
      Where flapping herons wake
      The drowsy water rats;
      There we've hid our faery vats,
      Full of berrys
      And of reddest stolen cherries.
      Come away, O human child!
      To the waters and the wild
      With a faery, hand in hand,
      For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.
      Where the wave of moonlight glosses
      The dim gray sands with light,
      Far off by furthest Rosses
      We foot it all the night,
      Weaving olden dances
      Mingling hands and mingling glances
      Till the moon has taken flight;
      To and fro we leap
      And chase the frothy bubbles,
      While the world is full of troubles
      And anxious in its sleep.
      Come away, O human child!
      To the waters and the wild
      With a faery, hand in hand,
      For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.
      Where the wandering water gushes
      From the hills above Glen-Car,
      In pools among the rushes
      That scare could bathe a star,
      We seek for slumbering trout
      And whispering in their ears
      Give them unquiet dreams;

"William Butler Yeats and Postcolonialism." Yeats, as a writer who devoted himself to Irish culture and literature, could be considered a postcolonial figure, this essay contends. Most of his formative and professional activities occurred near this Primary Location. His childhood was spent near Dublin and summer vacationing in Sligo (54N10; 8W40): locations that appear frequently in his writing. When he was nine the Yeats family briefly relocated to London, but in 1880 they returned to Howth, Ireland (53N23; 6W04; near Sandymount), where Yeats attended high school. He studied art in Dublin from 1884 to 1886, but the need to develop his literary talent soon emerged, especially following publication of Mosada (1885): a lyric poem that first appeared in The Dublin University Review Typical Neptune / Mercury keynotes include: “inspiration [...] for artistic expression,” “creative literary expression,” “stimulation of intuitive and creative mental processes,” and “creative writing and poetry.”1 Indeed, two preoccupations dominate Yeats’s work: “literary exploration / of occult, mystic, or spiritual themes” (Primary Mercury / Secondary Neptune) and the promulgation of Irish nationalism through the medium of “literary / propaganda” (Mercury / Neptune). “Mystic and occult imagery” (Neptune) occurs throughout his oeuvre; examples include the appearance of “magic” in

Influences and Change for Both Brothers ... Jack Yeats: A Few Samplings From The Mature Years xxxx Strategies Author xxx Introduction OVERVIEW: This curriculum unit, designed for grades 7-12, fully integrates various artistic disciplines with geography, history, social studies, media and technology. The unit is designed for use either in its completeness or in such a way that individual lessons can be accessed. This unit on William Butler Yeats, the writer, and Jack Yeats, the painter, is dedicated to immersing students in a study of the brothers as voices of Ireland, and as two of the most renowned artists of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is dedicated also to evoking students to see how the outlook of an age controls cultural expression, and how this expression is articulated in similar ways throughout genres of art. To help effect these major goals, focus is placed on: the impact of geography, place, and family on both William Butler Yeats and Jack Yeats; the influence of personalities of the time period on the two artists; also, the ways both Yeats align, in philosophical construct and creative expression, with the dynamic changes that occurred in the last part of the nineteenth and the early part of the twentieth centuries.

William Butler Yeats Biography - Poems
William Butler Yeats was born in Sandymount, Dublin on June 13th, 1865. John Butler Yeats, Williams father, studied law at an early age, but then soon turned to portrait painting as means of support. His mother, Susan Mary Pollexfen, was an Anglo-Irish woman from Sligo. At an early age the William Butler moved to Sligo to stay with his extended family. There he would find a true childhood home. The Yeats were very artistic. Jack, Williams brother, became a well-known painter and his sisters, Elizabeth and Susan, were involved in the Arts and Crafts movement. The family then moved to London where John would try and further his career. However, things did not work out as planned and the family moved back to Dublin. There, William spent much of his time at his fathers studio meeting with many of Dublin's painters and writers.

William Butler Yeats and Postcolonialism Which Yeats? There are many versions of William Butler Yeats, 1865-1939, Ireland's most famous poet, dramatist, critic and Senator. Claimed by Irish nationalists, occultists, fascists, modernists, Romantics, and postcolonialists, Yeats's life and work are open to many interpretations. As a writer who devoted himself to building Irish culture and literature, Yeats's position as a postcolonial figure seems obvious. At the same time, he was a member of the Anglo Irish Ascendancy and flirted with fascist ideas in his old age. This web site offers a short biography (Lengthy biographies of Yeats abound on the web; please see the electronic bibliography for more information.), and summarizes some of the most compelling arguments for Yeats as a major postcolonial artist.
Critical Overview This discussion, obviously, rests on the question of Ireland's place as a postcolonial nation. Ashcroft, Griffith and Tiffin, in The Empire Writes Back
Biography The Early Years: Sligo, London, Gonne, Folklore and Mysticism Born in Dublin in 1865, Yeats was the son of a painter
