Search A few months back I talked up Herodotus Conversations of Socrates carried me most of the long way from Vancouver to Heathrow today (these new Powerbooks get two hours max, four if you turn the screen off and use it as a music box). The Socrates is a bit of a plodder, but herewith an unabashed rave over his Anabasis , a totally unbelievable true story well-told, and some general remarks as to why you might want to read these long-dead writers. Why Read Classics? Socrates Anabasis! What happened is still amazing a couple of millennia later; they elected new officers (including Xenophon), fought their way North through the Empire to the Black Sea, then East eventually back to Greek territory. Xenophon is not that great a writer, but he gets out of the way and lets the story tell itself, which is more than enough in this case. Anabasis is sometimes sold with title untranslated, sometimes as The March Upcountry or The Persian Expedition Socrates Anabasis , Xenophon is wondering whether he should join the expedition. He asks Socrates for advice on the matter (yes, that Socrates); the story of how he dodges around the advice, and how Socrates reacts, is a spoiler too juicy to give away here. Still, I wish I had Socrates around to go ask for advice on my problems.

Submitted by Xenophon on Tue, 2008-01-08 20:27. Since we’re talking about Obama. I couldn’t figure out why my spidey sense won’t let me accept this. I ask my self Xenophon, old boy, is this just hateration To which my self responds in true Chicago fashion, that motherfucker couldn’t beat Bobby Rush. And the number one law in Chicago is we can always take this shit to the streets. Capone, Daley, Washington, Hampton, Hoover, Fort, Jones, Rostenkowski, Emmanuelle all great Chicago politicians have a touch of the streets. Not Obama. Why couldn’t a Columbia, Harvard educated (He never mentions Charles Hamilton Houston, hmmm) law professor beat a mumble mouthed COINTELPRO refugee? Read more

Summary of Xenophon of Ephesus' Ephesian Romance
Book 1 Why do you yearn to learn the end of a malady, and its beginning?
One disease has both in its grasp, and from that the remedy must be accomplished
But for them I see terrible sufferings and toils that are endless,
Both will flee over the sea pursued by madness;
They will suffer chains at the hands of men who mingle with the waters;
And a tomb will be the burial chamber for both, and fire the destroyer;
And beside the waters of the river Nile, to Holy Isis
The Savior you will afterwards offer rich gifts;
But still, after their sufferings a better fate is in store. (Anderson's translation). When the oracle is brought to their parents, they have no idea what dangers the oracle might be predicting, but they decide to do the best they can and marry the pair and then send them on a trip abroad. The whole city celebrates their marriage, and the lovers themselves have a passionate wedding night, with Anthia taking the initiative. But after the honeymoon the parents, in order to try to mollify the oracle, decide to send the couple away from Ephesus for a while, and they leave with much heartache. They set sail, and first land at Samos, where they sacrifice, and then head toward Rhodes. In their conversations in route Anthia and Habrocomes swear eternal faithfulness to each other. They finally put into Rhodes, and the Rhodians gather, amazed at the couple's beauty, wondering if they are divine, and some even offering worship. The couple in turn dedicate a gold panoply to Helius with the following inscription.

Lee A horse is a thing of beauty... none will tire of looking at him as long as he displays himself in his splendor. Xenophon Excess of grief for the dead is madness; for it is an injury to the living, and the dead know it not. Xenophon Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything. Xenophon For drink, there was beer which was very strong when not mingled with water, but was agreeable to those who were used to it. They drank this with a reed, out of the vessel that held the beer, upon which they saw the barley swim. Xenophon For what the horse does under compulsion, as Simon also observes, is done without understanding; and there is no beauty in it either, any more than if one should whip and spur a dancer. Xenophon He who eats with most pleasure is he who least requires sauce.

Xenophon
(c.430-355BC) Historian, soldier and essayist from Athens, Xenophon was educated by Plato and worked as a mercenary under Cyrus the Younger of Persia in his fight against his brother Artaterxes II.
Xenophon led the Greek force back to safety in a Greek colony when Cyrus was killed in the battle of Cunaxa in 401 BC. This force of "Ten Thousand" later joined the Spartans, who were fighting the Persian leaders in Asia Minor, something which eventually made Xenophon rich.
In 394 BC he joined the court of the Spartan king Agelisaus II, and was present at the Battle of Coronea the same year, where the Spartans defeated the Athenian and Theban armies. For this, Xenophon was convicted of treachury by the Athenians, and he was sentenced to banishment.
He was then given an estate in Elis by the Spartan government, but when the Thebans defeated the Spartans at the battle of Leuctra 13 years later, he was forced to leave his home.
The rest of is life he spent in Corinth. His son Gryllos was the one who killed Epaminondas in battle, only to die himself right after. Xenophon learnt the news while he was making a sacrifice to the gods. He took off his wreath in grief, but when he was told that his son had died killing Epaminondas he put the wreath on again and continued the sacrifice.
