My life in particular never has stayed fixed in one position very long. . . . I am only facing the facts when I know that any moment of any day, or any night, could bring my death.

    Malcolm X Day
The third Sunday in May marks the celebration of Malcolm X Day. Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, Malcolm X became one of the most outspoken and popular leaders of the black nationalist movement in the 1960s. Malcolm X was imprisoned in 1946 for burglary and embraced the Nation of Islam while in prison. Upon his release in 1952, he went to the Muslim headquarters in Chicago and met Elijah Muhammad. He then became a prominent speaker and was assigned to Mosque Number Seven in New York City. However, his comments following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy resulted in his suspension and Malcolm X decided to establish his own organization, the Organization of Afro-American Unity. Malcolm X was a fervent supporter of black separatism and spoke eloquently and bitterly against white people. A trip to Mecca in 1964 caused him to modify these views and he announced that he now embraced world unity. On February 21, 1965, he was assassinated at the Audobon Ballroom in Harlem by members of a rival organization. Playboy magazine published Alex Haley's interview with Malcolm X in May 1963. This interview led to Haley co-authoring

    By Rita Kempley
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    November 18, 1992
The much-hyped "Malcolm X" happens to be a spiritually enriching testament to the human capacity for change and surely Spike Lee's most universally appealing film. An engrossing mosaic of history, myth and sheer conjecture, this ambitious epic manages to sustain itself for 3 hours 21 minutes, and also overcomes an early frivolity of tone and Lee's intrusiveness to achieve a stature befitting its subject. Lee, whose enormous affection for his hero suffuses his work, nevertheless resists the temptation to sanitize Malcolm as Richard Attenborough did Gandhi. The civil rights leader, as eloquently portrayed by Denzel Washington, emerges as an immensely likable human being a onetime black separatist who overcame his own prejudices. Still, this biopic will ruffle a few white feathers and probably a few black ones too; that's a given but "Malcolm X" addresses itself to all Americans, reminding us none too gently with its opening footage of the Rodney King beating that the work is never done. Though the film covers 40 of the most turbulent years in our society, it seems oddly isolated from its time and place, almost as if the characters were trapped in a snow globe. This segregation may be purposeful, even astute, on Lee's part, but it denies Malcolm his historical underpinnings. And there's a theatricality to the crowd and street scenes that give the film the look of a Broadway play.

ISLAM AGAINST RACISM AND PREJUDICE Hajj as a shift against racism: El Hajj Malik El Shabazz (Malcolm X)'s letter Many Muslims who have been blessed to make Hajj often speak of how the journey is a life-changing experience. This is more the case for some than others. Malcolm X is one Muslim who saw the light of true Islam through his Hajj in April 1964. As a former member and speaker for the Nation of Islam, a black spiritual and nationalist movement, he believed that the white man was the devil and the black man superior. After leaving the Nation of Islam in March 1964, he made Hajj, which helped change his perspective on whites and racism completely. Here is an excerpt of a letter El Hajj Malik El Shabazz wrote about his Hajj experience. In it, he explains what it was during this blessed journey that made him so profoundly shift his perspective on race and racism: "There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and the non-white.

In the late 1980's, the street was again renamed, this time to honor the slain civil rights leader.

    Malcolm X: Review
MALCOLM X opens with a pair of intercut, highly polemical images: the notorious video footage of unarmed black motorist Rodney King being beaten by white L.A. policemen; and an American flag burning down into the shape of an "X." Yet this is one of only a few times in the film where director Spike Lee wears his politics on his sleeve. Lee's biography of the slain civil rights leader treats Malcolm, not as a political rallying point, but as a fully rounded individual whose li... read more

Malcolm X was one of the most fiery and controversial people of the 20th century, an activist to say the least. As a matter of fact it seems that being an Activist was a way of life for Malcolm.
Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1925, Malcolm was the son of a Baptist minister, who was an avid supporter of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association. While living in Omaha, the family was often harassed at one point the family's house was set afire. In 1929 the family moved to Lansing, Michigan. While in Michigan, Malcolm's father was killed; his body severed in two by a streetcar and his head smashed. In his autobiography, written with Alex Haley , Malcolm asserted that his father may have been killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan . His mother, stricken by the death of her husband and the demands of providing for the family, was committed to a mental institution.
